This is a little off topic, but in light of the wildfire situation, is it possible (or recommended) to drive through the Interior? Basically traveling from Alberta to the Lower Mainland. I just noticed the Coquhalla is closed between Merritt and Hope and there are other fires near Sicamous and Three Valley.

Highway 1 through the Fraser canyon is also closed due to a rock slide. Only road to the coast open is Highway 3.

You can turn off onto Hwy 99 from Hwy 1 and get to Vancouver via Whistler.

Fall closure schedule for Kicking Horse Phase 4 has been finalized.

Highlights:

Quote:

The traffic management strategy is designed to minimize and mitigate traffic disruptions while allowing the work to proceed safely and on schedule:

Labour Day weekend: the canyon will be fully open day and night.

Until Sept. 15: daytime travel through the canyon will continue to be uninterrupted with rare exceptions. Evening half-hour stoppages due to single-lane alternating traffic and overnight closures will continue. During any overnight closures, Trans-Canada Highway traffic will be diverted to the alternative route of highways 93 and 95 through Radium Hot Springs.

Sept. 15: daytime stoppages of up to half an hour due to single-lane

Evening half-hour stoppages due to single-lane alternating traffic and overnight closures will continue. During any overnight closures, Trans-Canada Highway traffic will be diverted to the alternative route of highways 93 and 95 through Radium Hot Springs.

Sept. 15: daytime stoppages of up to half an hour due to single-lane alternating traffic will be added between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Sept. 20 (noon) to Dec. 1 (6 a.m.): Kicking Horse Canyon Constructors will implement a multi-day, 24-hour, extended closure of the Trans-Canada Highway. Through traffic on Highway 1 between Golden to Castle Junction will be routed via highways 93 and 95, which will add up to 1.5 hours of travel time. Roadside signage will provide advance notification of the closure. Alternative routes will have signage.

============================

Exceptions to extended road closures:

Sept. 25-26: the multi-day 24-hour closure is suspended, but shorter-duration stoppages and overnight closures may apply.

Thanksgiving holiday long weekend: the highway will be fully open day and night.

A limited-access pass system established to allow local commuters and school buses to be escorted through the construction zone during two brief windows daily is now at or very near capacity. Information on the pass system is posted on the project website.

Another fatal crash occurred east of Revelstoke. Condolences to the victim’s family and friends.
=====
So many fatal collisions have happened there. Which parts are the worst spots on that stretch??

Blaeberry is just west of Golden, maybe 10 km or so.

That part is not bad at all.

I’ve been wondering:
Why does Crowsnest Highway have 4 lanes in the middle of Manning Park? Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice, but the location seems random to me.

Above is the western limit of the 4 lanes, separate from those between Hope and west entrance to Manning Park.

I'm just speculating, but it could be that the terrain in that part of the park was easier to build in, as compared to the steeper terrain to the east and west. It also gives a nice long stretch for passing to help reduce lines that may have formed behind slower vehicles in the narrower hill sections.

I've often wondered that as well. I've taken that highway a hundred times to get between Castlegar and Vancouver.

SO what does everyone think abou the current state of LML and southern interior highways?

I think from best condition to worst we're looking at:

1. Highway3
2. Highway99
3. Highway 1
4. Highway 5/8

I don't see how highway 5 and 8 are open until 2022/2023

Yes, when a road is described as "Nicola River swallows Highway 8 west of Merritt" it may be a while before it is rebuilt!
