World's worst architecture.

You can post here pics of the ugliest contemporary architecture you can find... :)

10538 Apr 21, 2013 5:32 PM

I found these boring social houses in Loopealse, Lasnamäe, Tallinn. I really hate that building in the middle...

I also hate big shopping centers, like this one:

Ohh, boy this will be an interesting thread

1. Every Communist block on the face of the planet, I think i'll leave it at that:

2. Madison Square Garden, this bastardized Colosseum is just plain disgusting. It's mere presence in the landscape of Manhattan is incredibly offensive. What makes it even more offensive is the fact it replaced something oh so beautiful:

3. Every single bunker on the face of the earth, again i'll leave it at that:

I love Madison Square Garden. Yes, I agree, it replaced something way better, but taken on it's own, it is a great piece of mid century architecture.

BAH! These threads usually turn into a "What I think is ugly" thread. With lots of people point and saying "HEY! I like that building"

This new Extron Electrons suburban office park building in Raleigh. The overall prison look of the building, the too small windows, the lack of scale, the blander than bland facade. Oh god kill it with fire.

I nominate the entire Walter Netsch-designed campus of the University Of Illinois at Chicago. While the campus has changed quite a bit since my days there, I remember UIC as a dismal, uninspiring, and occasionally dangerous place.

texcolo Apr 22, 2013 8:39 PM

This New Orleans' edifice usually makes the list, and having seen it in person it is a wee beast.

They're hideous, but interesting. You can't help but wonder why they look like that. I am pretty sure it was intentional. The clock on the right tower is really the cherry on the cake of bad architecture that is Trg Republike.

That's a new one, and an ugly one. It's a confused mess between 70's Brutalism, 80's PostModernism and the Queen Mary.

SD_Phil Apr 23, 2013 5:07 AM

Wow Lipani, that one is almost unintelligibly bad.

Cheap late 80s early 90s postmodernism is by far the worst architecture on the planet.

Dirty 70s blocks can be saved with new paint and windows (I've seen amazing examples of commieblock renovations) but there is no way to save those tacky hunks of pomo crap.

Insoluble Apr 23, 2013 5:43 PM

There was a thread similar to this a few years back which went on for 23 pages:

Some of the buildings on there are truly amazingly ugly.

Pelli buildings and similar types are all good, but the cheap imitators with beige stone/green glass are always tacky and ghastly to look at.

^It was bound to happen.

The UK has just awarded the Carbuncle Cup 2014: Woolwich supermarket named 'worst building'.

I like the description: "oppressive, defensive, arrogant and inept." That's a stunning list of adjectives.

It also talks about the Walkie Talkie building that apparently might not have won this year only because it actually isn't finished yet.

M.R.Victor Sep 10, 2014 9:27 PM

Doesn't this sort of thread normally settle on various forms of Brutalism countered by examples of suburban sprawl and garden-variety Post-Modernism? Usually that hotel in North Korea makes a guest appearance and those with finer palates get offended by the architectural boorishness of their SSP peers.

That's a better looking curtain-wall than we've been able to muster in Chicago for a long time.

This is truly a revolting piece of garbage. The Skylon Tower, Niagara Falls.

You've got to be kidding! This is one of the most beautiful towers in NFO. The rest of the towering crap that is present day NFO is what should be torn down - they make a joke of the beauty that is the falls. The Skylon Tower was especially beautiful when it was the only tower on the skyline.

Funny you what this graceful tower torn down, but don't mention the awful "Beefeaters" tower nearby.

I believe this was the inspiration for the CN Tower in Toronto. Surely, the CN Tower's architects ripped off the design of the Skylon for their tower.

MolsonExport Nov 11, 2014 5:40 PM

The skylon tower is fugly. The fact that the rest of Niagara falls towers are also fugly does not make the skylon less fugly.

MolsonExport Nov 11, 2014 5:45 PM

From where I currently live (London, Ontario). Brace yourself. It is Fugly. Reminds me of Snooki's face.

Snooki's face looks like someone hot-glued a dogs snout to a moldy catchers mitt. Originally, I thought she was a dachshund Troll-doll hybrid or some kind of self-aware funnel cake made of cherry vodka.

You have to admit it is kind of cool how they softened the lines with that greenery at the bottom. Sometimes I think the only cure for Brutalism is a good climbing vine, preferably something that flowers.

The_Architect Nov 12, 2014 3:30 PM

The Skylon tower has potential to not be terrible, it just needs to be cleaned up a bit.

haha yeah me too, but at least it's dramatic coming into the city from the airport and at least it's colorfully brutal, unlike all the rest of that kind of stuff that is usually oppressively gray. i can't believe i am standing up for it a little bit here :haha:, but only because there is so much bleakness in the world of public housing.

Really, I don't understand how they managed to make it worse than when it was incomplete. That cladding is just a hideous shade of 90s office tower blue with lame clashing white. :yuck:
