I've been worried about that crane for years, especially given the force that hurricane-force winds might transfer from the crane to the building. It does look like the connection is quite robust (3 beams per level between the crane and building), but a damaging shearing force might still be transferred.
But it looks like this incident was caused by a cable connecting to the crane boom. If so, that cable must have been swinging at a significant velocity to do that much damage. Lots of asses in slings after this debacle, and probably a months-long delay before project completion. |
I'm waiting for photos showing the damage to the building.

From a NYT article:
"A preliminary Buildings Department investigation determined that a so-called headache ball at the end of a hoist cable had hit the building’s upper floors, causing “large sections of glass and aluminum debris” to fall off and onto the street, Mr. Rudansky said." Google images: "headache ball." |

question... for cranes this high up... do they have like a restroom/breakroom/coffee machine etc so that the operator does not have to climb down 1000 feet to pee or get a cup of coffee?
|
I've usually seen the portable bathrooms up high.

More debris came down from the tower after tonight's severe storm with tornado warnings for most of the region.

^ very nice, this crown closeup is exactly what i have wanted to see.
i still can't figure out what is going on there and has yet to be done? it's really turning out to be a challenge that is for sure. |

I was looking to see if I could find any visible damage (without getting too close). But couldn't really tell. I know they have been removing the damaged parts. Not sure where the glass fell from. |
Looks like a lot of the glass near the crane had to be removed/redone as you can see some panels that were there before are missing :( Hopefully it'll be externally complete by January and lit up soon!!

You're right, you have to look at a before and after to see it. https://a4.pbase.com/o12/06/102706/1...17_InPixio.jpg https://a4.pbase.com/o12/06/102706/1...16_InPixio.jpg Older look https://a4.pbase.com/o12/06/102706/1...71_InPixio.jpg |
