Wait so it’s NOT the tallest building in the world known only by its address?

People always forget that this is not "officially" a new building, but an addition (or alteration) to the existing landmark, the Steinway Building. It's just a very tall addition, but an addition still. That's why it doesn't count as a new building by the DOB. But like other buildings, it's still known by it's address as well. http://111w57.com/

A look at the top again...

She doesn't stand wide, as skyscrapers are best when they soar upward, not outward. She rises, unapologetically, on the New York skyline. She is the Queen of Billiionaire's Row.
She is as much the spirit of New York as 53w53, One Vanderbilt, the Chrysler, and the Empire State. And she wears her crown well.

An extended look at our new queen...

Fantastic shots!!!

viewguysf Oct 10, 2019 6:02 AM

That overused word is appropriate here; some of them are literally breathtaking. Well done!

dropdeaded209 Oct 10, 2019 9:26 AM

it will certainly be fascinating to watch them assemble the fins for the crown one by one--baller how you can see the attachment anchors on the crown already. We've still got plenty more captivating construction moments to go...

SteveD Oct 10, 2019 12:58 PM

Wow. Wow. Wow. Thank you for that amazing series.

I can't wait to see this in person on my next trip to NYC.

patriotizzy Oct 10, 2019 3:32 PM

111W is the runway model of NYC. She's tall, skinny, and beautiful.

NYguy Oct 10, 2019 4:38 PM

Thanks all. Probably too many shots, but she's our Queen! I wish I could climb this thing, and swat away helicopters, lol.

Prezrezc Oct 10, 2019 6:45 PM

But shouldn't that make 1Vandy kitty-corner up the street-grid "Queen Kong"?

STP's "Birthday Deathbed" lyrics v. cadence flashback coming on really hard.....

:banaride::awesome::banana::dancing:

'K bye.........

uaarkson Oct 10, 2019 6:50 PM

So is this structurally topped out now?

Prezrezc Oct 10, 2019 7:08 PM

Indeed it is.

We just anticipate the crown being assembled.

And then the illumination of that crown, which if it beats the renders of those to hell and back, will be sick...in a healthy way, obviously.

You know? There used to be a time when city officials had to go a helluva long way to make their skylines pretty at night.

Today, the technology behind the Light-Emitting Diode makes this a shit-ton lot easier. And there's no doubt IMHO that future technological advances and stable economies will join forces many times over to make city-scapes and large-scale suspension bridges--I'm looking at both of you, SF-Oakland Bay and Verazzano "Get With the Program Coz Both the New(s) Koszciusko and Tappan Zee Systems Have Your Ass Kicked Glow-in-the-Dark" Narrows--from dusk through dawn masterpieces

matt19215 Oct 10, 2019 9:35 PM

I could only imagine the swaying in the crown

Prezrezc Oct 10, 2019 10:09 PM

Why would you think that?

Or is it that "impression you or anyone else gets" when you start that "rhetorical wondering aloud" thang?

Fear not, friends, for I do that in front of my beautiful, three-weeks-off-the shelf iMac every day...

...and so does KPF, I'd wager...re architecture, I mean.

No, not iMacs.

I was just in NYC last week, and I'd totally forgotten how many bad weather days it has. So I tip my hat to those who can wander about on the rare good days and document skyscraper progress.
The other epiphany I had was that the skyscrapers look lovely in photos and from the distance in real life, but they are very hard to appreciate on the street level because one is constantly in a crowd in New York. The ideal implied by the skyline is very different from the reality on the streets. TLDR: great place to visit, doubt I could survive living there unless I was a billionaire.

Better than the desolate streets of downtown Dallas or Houston on a weekend. Are those cities even cities? That applies to most American cities where downtown is a glorified office park. I'd take a crowded city than a lifeless one. Ny is a real metropolis, it never gets boring because it's so big and lively. Most of those cutesy Euro/Aussie/Cancuk towns on those quality of life lists you read about are just boring after 3 days, glorified towns honestly.

There are plenty of vantage points to ogle the skyline like in postcards. Or go to Brooklyn/Queens/Jersey.

Of course NY is croweded, it's a tiny island with a dense population. The skyline hints directly at that density. It's no Dubai, a city with skyscrapers built for show, not need and wide open spaces/streets with little pedestrian life.

Weather is fine in NY, you're exaggerating. Rare good days? You just got unlucky, look at some climate data before you just talk nonsense. There are plenty of blue bird days in NY all year. Sunlight hours are pretty high compared to gloomy Northern European towns too, so you get a bright winter. Temps are pretty temperate in comparison to desert hell holes or northern wastelands.
