So I think an important part of trying to figure out how our skyline will be transformed in next 3 years are economic cycles. Anyhow I won't mention it anymore if it is bothering people. PM me if you have any questions. I love my hometown and I want to see all these towers built. I guess I just get worried that many of them won't.

I completely understand where you're coming from buddy. If I might offer some advice, it pays sometimes to step back and realize thing are just going to happen. I would never tell you not to care, or discourage you from helping build our beautiful city's future in whatever way you might choose, but in the end we're all just like leaves floating on a mighty river. Despite what some may say, no one can truly know its direction and no one man can claim responsibility for it for it course. It just... flows.

It might come that there's a recession, and all those wonderful projects might never come to be. That'd be sad. But then the economy might rise again and we'll see even better developments than we can have imagine today. Or maybe something else entirely we can't even conceive of right now. And so my friend, in true San Diego fashion I encourage you to sit back and take life as it comes.

So guys, we finally have the study for connecting public transit to the airport. There's a ton to digest in the document, but I'll just post the pics since I know that's what ya'll want to see first.

Note that no option has been selected yet, nor will one be selected at either the Airport Subcommittee meeting next week on the 25th or the SANDAG board of supervisors meeting on the 27th. There's enough trade offs between each option that the powers that be want to public to abstain them of responsibility have a say in the final decision.

Will O' Wisp Sep 20, 2019 7:42 PM

And finally I'll give some context for Concept 1, the tunneled APM. IMO the cost of this option is wildly underestimated, the study essentially presupposes none of the following issues will be factors:

https://i.imgur.com/1PrvOMo.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/d59994l.jpg

SANDAG decided not to add a cost contingency for these partially because it's extremely difficult to estimate without doing a lot more study, and partially because some of the the worst case scenarios looked really, really bad ($1-2 billion+ in additional costs).

Also the 3 minute travel time doesn't include time spent going up and down to reach the tunnel entrance 80 feet below grade. An escalator will add 1 1/2 to 2 minutes each way (which gives the total time of 6-7 minutes from Grand Central Station to Terminal). Elevators would be slightly faster, but have capacity issues.

Oh my :D that looks beautiful!! Very timeless in my opinion... I feel like one can stand in the center and just marvel at the surrounding environment... people, architecture, etc

mello Sep 20, 2019 8:45 PM

Wow thanks for detailed info Will'O !

On another note the whole thing about will the convention center expansion and homeless funding only need a 50 percent threshold to pass because it is a citizens initiative is up in the air again. Officials were thinking it would not need the 2/3 majority but now there is some new ruling out of Fresno that puts it in jeopardy. Plus this is a hotel tax increase not an actual direct tax on residents so why won't the CA Supreme court take this issue up and clarify it so we can all know what we are working with

I'm good with any option except the trolley.

Let's dream big things

I truly don't understand this (lovely) whale carcass in SD... with acres of space seemingly not "animated" at all except by a few pedestrians (presumably bored after surfing, biking or going to the mall).

Seems so out of scale for SD and not a home-run that makes much sense.

P.S. it's a small airport so maybe an "innovative" maglev train from a smaller, inviting, well located meeting place.

Can someone explain what NAVWAR is?

You might be more interested in the ITC location then, which is slightly smaller and located closer to the airport.

Very early rendering

There is still a good deal of controversy remaining over the concept selection. The study I linked, although accurate on its own terms, leaves out some potential problems. A lot of them relate to Concepts 1 and 2, and there have been accusations of SANDAG playing favoritism.

One of the largest concerns is that the study left out the cost of relocating the COASTER tracks from Old Town to the new NAVWAR site. NCTD has said the Old Town and Santa Fe stations are too close as it is, and they won't approve a third stop between them. The ITC is too far from Old Town to replace that station, so the NAVWAR site is the only option with a COASTER stop. That's probably NAVWAR's biggest concrete selling point, being able to transfer directly from the COASTER to the APM.

But then again, the COASTER might not be something proponents of NAVWAR might want to bring up, since only 10% of SDIA's passengers come from North County and only a fraction of those use the COASTER. Increasing frequency along the line might raise the latter, but that's a project so far out of scope that it'd be disingenuous to include it in ridership calculations. So having a COASTER station ends up hardly bulging the needle in NAVWAR's direction.

Once you get past all that NAVWAR's benefits are less tangible, although still significant. The ITC site doesn't have the area to leave room for future improvements, what you build is essentially whats going to be there forever. NAVWAR has enough land to leave some aside for, say, Ikahara's much ballyhooed ultra-fast transit system (which he's yet to secure funding for). And, the NAVWAR site contains a significantly greater development aspect

But that's likely to be rather controversial in and of itself....

NAVWAR is SPAWAR. It's those giant rectangular buildings off the I-5.

Thanks Will appreciate it.

Sorry for tangent but you mentioned COASTER and wondered if u knew of any comprehensive planning to deal with north of SD issues (mid term disaster).

The failing bluffs have already taken lives recently and I just wonder about what they will do with a major rail link propped up with some shoring and gravel along the stretch past Torrey Pines, Del Mar and beyond.

Seen it and walked it half a dozen visits. Worried.

That's just a little bit out of my expertise, but I'm told the plan is to eventually have a tunnel most of Del Mar. The issue up until now has been funding, it would cost about $2 billion dollars and SANDAG doesn't have the money for that right now.

Maldive Sep 24, 2019 3:22 PM

I vaguely remember an idea to move the rail line east, cutting into hundreds? of millions of dollars of real estate.

In lieu of expropriation and 20 years in the courts, they might just pass the hat to home-owners and raise half the budget for a different strategy (tunnel or otherwise) lol.

Trolley line to the airport is best, better if the line is eventually extended more to the west from the airport, dense places like Ocean Beach and Loma Portal.

Now that I commute to/from La Jolla...

Will the Regents bridge ever be built?

Seems like that would help traffic congestion a bit
