As I feared, from a distance the east and west facades result in a monotonous pinstripe.
|
these towers will soon leave even the local yokels slack jawed
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/...20130424153830 |
The mullions on the 57th profile and the transoms on the Park-facing side, for all their supposed monotony, are spaced/designed as if to create IMO the illusion of slightly convex/concave surfaces respectively.

This thing will be freakish for sure. Its only gonna get more slim as it grows even higher! |

^I'm wondering if that moiré patterning (terra cotta side) is present in person too. I'm guessing it is. Which is really sweet; I was hoping that would be a present effect. Very neat.

I’m honestly still kind of in awe of this project sometimes. Not only are we getting a tower of almost prewar quality, but also a full restoration—not a tacky facadectomy—of a historically significant building. SHoP and JDS have really set the standard here that every other architect and developer should aspire to.
|
It looks great. The purists will hate the "thinness", but who cares? The facade is wonderful and the setbacks awe inspiring.
|
This tower has always been more Woolworth than Chrysler to me, but looking at it today from a distance down 57th Street, you can see that the facade will still be shiny. It has more of a Chrysler feel from a distance. And now we are getting to that fun part where the setbacks will increase with the height, until there is nothing left. That's the feature that will define this tower on the skyline.

Those vertical lines have been done many times before I know. We will judge when it's all done and see for ourselves how the sunlight reflects from the surface of the vertical wall. |
yes definately a woolworth/stern towers type of vibe.
walking by yesterday what struck me up close is the amount of ceramic up there now. all those panels of stacked bolted up tiles are quite something. and being only partly done its almost frightening in a way. at least this point in time of construction. it's like, can it all just peel off from the weight? it will be a relief to see the setbacks. |
For the $ and the unobstructed viewpoints from up there, I'd be yearning for more of those sunset/western views than the little cutouts are offering. I suppose at that height, that amount of concrete is necessary, but I'd want to punch through my western wall and get more sunset into my pad.

Plenty of other towers for west side views, so anybody with that priority wouldn't buy in a tower like this. The setback fun really goes into high gear when it passes One57. https://www.wsp.com/-/media/Project/...FC13B627E59F55 https://www.wsp.com/en-GL/projects/1...treet-new-york |

Well, I’m sure the mass dampers will keep this tower anchored.

Just popping in for my monthly, "this building is abso-fricken-lutely insane" comment.

Seeing that lattice crown go up in real photography versus digitized renders and drawings will be IMO the highlight of all this supertall nirvana.

This view of 111 West 57th Street down 6th Avenue will be crazy when the tower reaches its full height:

Now this is a beaut of a tower. So much better than Central Park Tower and 432 Park
|
One57 is about to be surrounded by very tall neighbors! :D
111 W 57th is also going to give 432 Park a very nice view. ;) |
I just can't wait to get to the setbacks that will define this one on the skyline...

yes after it catches one57 it will become its own elegant beast.
that is, it will very noticeably come into its own i think. that makes sense and it is a good marker of progress for the tower. they are really doing a good job of keeping apace of the height with the facade. |

That facade is so beautiful that I could imagine weeping with joy if I ever had the chance to see it in person...
Okay, that's a little dramatic, but still... Seriously, how hard could it be to give that level of attention to a few more designs, a little more often? This building is art. |
the terracotta is so glossy it almost looks like metal. Beautiful.

:goodpost: The excitement continues to delight all of us as we celebrate the new & exciting Central Park skyline!

I find myself not liking the CPT glass as much. Maybe its just Verre and Stienway overpower it due to their beauty. Hopefully I'll grow to like it, but right now, its iffy. :(

I don't know if the gold palette was intensified in those pics but wowzer, shiny and gold I love it. Also the beautiful moire pattern appearing again in the last pic.
