This is an overwrought, over the top, out of scale, and out of context monster gussied up in some green to make it more palatable to approving entities. Am wondering if it is fancied as a locus and local home for PRC media influencers. In process of writing local community boards and City of LA Planning Department to express concerns.

The government admitted there may be aliens already here from outer space, this is obviously tangible proof that there is at least one here.

I just found two other Pasadena slides that were probably taken by the same person who took the mystery fort-like water tower slide.

All three are dated 1962 and are being sold by the same eBay seller.

The newly found slides lend credence to the . .um. .that the location of the water tower is indeed Pasadena, California.

I'll add that we're looking at Bullock's Pasadena. (it's not a very good photograph)

LOL! Well, it is from the same company that designed George Lucas' Star Wars looking museum near USC.

--My first thought is that it looked like an oven mitt.

--A lot of the building designs currently being proposed all have greenery. I'm not opposed to greenery, but my thoughts run to: Greenery needs water. Water is in lessening supply. Greenery draws insects or other pests. Do these new buildings come with gardeners.

--It would be across the street from this newish building: Emerson College.

Wholeheartedly agree. I also notice it's covered with lots of highly reflective surfaces. This is a fundamentally bad idea.

Those tail fins bring back memories (not all good): Drop ("duck and cover") drills in school. Smog alerts. Backyard incinerators. On hot summer days in the valley visits to Pacific Ocean Park ("POP") and Marineland. Downtown skyline dominated by City Hall, Richfield tower and the giant gasometers. Elvis. Koufax and Drysdale. Leave it to Beaver. My 3 Sons. The Mickey Mouse Club. Ed Sullivan and Bonanza on Sunday night etc. :wiseman:

If it is a water tower why all the windows?

It occurred me that this might be a Pasadena in a different state but when you look at the surroundings it certainly looks like Pasadena California.

I thought there would be more pictures to find online of this building. :???:

It's unusual and "one of Pasadena's landmarks" according to the 1934 clipping.

Is this it in a 1962 aerial - same year as the Ebay picture?

On the streets bordering Carmelita Park, I think this looks the most likely candidate.

In 1938 it's appears to be inside the park's bounds in the north west portion, tallying with odinthor's 1934 clipping.

This is the background of a photo of a Richard Serra sculpture called Base Plate Deflection: In It, On It which was installed at the Pasadena Art Museum (I've cropped out the sculpture itself). Was the sculpture installed before the museum was even built?

Norton Simon Museum

:previous: Excellent, Mackerm, another photo of the elusive water tower. Believe me they are are few and far in between.

Here is some clarifying information.

Carmelita Gardens/Park, originally known simply as 'Carmelita', was the 42 acre property of Mrs. Jeanne Carr and Dr. Carr - 7 acres of which became the Norton Simon Museum property.

I found this interesting.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/pzYWOy.jpg

"Here are the Carrs at a rustic cabin that was on the property when they purchased it in 1880. They loved it so much they could never bring themselves to demolish it."

The Carrs are my kind of people. :)

The Carrs built a large home (which might have been a boarding house as well)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/D2ENwL.jpg
link coming

Later, the Carrs built a much more elaborate home which can be seen in an early Flyingwedge post. (the link is provided at the bottom of the post)

I need to research this more to go any further because I'm confused about the homes and where they stood on the property.

That said; I have no idea which home is visible in Noir Noir's 1938 aerial.

This local blog solved some of the mystery as recently as 2009 but it doesn't mention the unique water tower at all.

But a commenter does mention it.

No one answered her question.

The Carrs are previously mentioned in two NLA posts from 2015.

I believe there's a building in Dallas (?) that has a slightly concave surface that catches and concentrates the sun's rays and has been known to melt rubber surfaces of parked cars.

That's certainly true of 20 Fenchurch Street AKA The Walkie Talkie in London. According to Wikipedia, the concave glass produced spot street-level temperatures up to 243 °F (117 °C) before they fitted awnings to the higher floors.

From what I have read about Moneta which eventually became part of Gardena, the early town center was at Western Ave. & 166th St. That would be my best guess as to the location of the postcard photo.

You answered a question I had back in 2016.

I was confused back then because this rppc was labeled thusly. . .

"1910 era RPPC Real Photo Postcard MONETA California Gardena Street Los Angeles"

At the time I looked for a "Gardena Street" but now I realize the seller was just mentioning that there was a "street" in the photograph. duh

They are really trying. Hardly much there for inspiration for a major office tower.
