My May 1st flight to Dublin through YYZ just got cancelled on AC. I was a little surprised that they won't give a full refund. They offered to refund all but fees and $300 per ticket in cash, or a voucher for the full value valid for up to 2 years. I guess it's not their fault, but they didn't exactly stop it from happening either (Covid 19).

Not saying domestic numbers won't be affected, but it can't be as bad as flights being simply cancelled like most international flights out of the 3 bigger airports. And they also have higher transborder numbers so they will probably be more impacted there too....

Your thoughts guys?

1. Once traffic dies down next week, it will die down the same everywhere. Domestic, international and transborder. No segment is spared.

2. YYC sees a lot more connecting traffic than the 3 majors (YYC is 30-40% O&D, whereas the 3 majors are 75-80% O&D). That will hurt it more, as one person that usually transits through YYC actually counts for 2 passengers. Remove that 1 person, and YYC lost 2 pax, not just 1. Combine this with the fact that WS will significantly reduce it's domestic network, and you quickly realize that YYC gains to lose just as much as the 3 majors.

Now, this being said, first half March numbers might favor YYC, but once traffic dies down next week, all will be even.

Air Canada laying off 3,600 mainline flight attendants and all Rouge flight attendants. So Rouge will stop all flying!

Domestic was reduced by more than 50% too. All that will be left international wise is daily KLM and 3 weekly BA (Which I suspect will also get suspended too). Transborder shows about 7-9 flights per day on the US carriers, for now.

International terminal will likely just be long-term parking spots for grounded aircraft.

Thanks to you and thenoflyzone for your answers. They make total sense. Fair to say that all airports will be heavily impacted.

Looks like KLM is suspending YUL & YVR. They've previously suspended YEG too.

YYC / YYZ are still scheduled daily.

YOW's February pax numbers are out and as I expected thanks for the Via Rail blockades, they're good (but that's it for 2020!):

February / 2019 / 2020 / % Change
Domestic / 277,051 / 290,829 / +5.0% - Via Rail blockades for much of the month - lots of Rapidair upgauges
Transborder / 68,217 / 63,333 / -7.2%
International / 59,598 / 67,150 / +12.7%
Total Feb. / 404,866 / 421,312 / +4.1%

Y-T-D / 2019 / 2020 / % Change
Domestic / 550,014 / 569,079 / +3.5%
Transborder / 134,798 / 125,210 / -7.1%
International / 123,436 / 133,405 / +8.1%
Total / 808,248 / 827,694 / +2.4%

Looks like we may end up with only 2 airlines when all of this is said and done. I think the world has shit the bed with all this. The economic fallout and livelihoods destroyed will be far worse than the virus.

The world has responded as though it's full scale nuclear war and that if you step outside you're most certainly going to get sick with death ultimately being your only saviour.

I disagree. Porter are halting flying after today, so their cash burn will be low and they've previously stated they're largely debt-free. Sunwing are lucky that this hit in the final 6-7 weeks of their peak season. Given they don't have the transatlantic exposure TS does, I think they'll be okay.

Canadian North and the other northern carriers like Air Creebec, Air Inuit, etc. are the lifelines to the south. Cargo demand, which makes up a large percentage of their business, won't change much, while there will still be some pax traffic for essential travel. Canadian North/First Air have said they're cutting capacity by roughly half, but they'll be okay.

Hopefully no Canadian carriers fail after all of this, but it's likely 1 or 2 of the tiny players will succumb.

Flair is almost certainly the most vulnerable and I'd imagine this all but guarantees the AC takeover of TS will be approved as without a merger TS are probably done.

The government will step up with loans like they did for GM.

Delhi will now be suspended from both YVR & YYZ
https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/...ravel.html#/na

Which means YYZ will have only 2 AC international destinations
Frankfurt & London-Heathrow. That’s mad

I think the Indians are closing DEL to international flights next week.

It will be interesting to see the analysis afterwards. Certainly the economic devastation is going to be huge.

AC repatriation flight tomorrow. First of many, no doubt. CMN-YUL with a 450 seater B77W. Passengers will need to pay 1272$ +tax per person to be on the flight.

Lots of coverage today of people stranded in Peru. Seems like significant numbers getting a first-hand lesson on the limitations on the government's ability to help them out.

I hope that after this crisis most Canadians will stay in Canada, and spend their money in Canada. We don't need 3 million Canadians abroad.

That will likely be the case. I suspect once this is all over most people for the next year or two will stick closer to home.

Canada also benefits greatly from overseas tourists that come here. That will be depressed. The domestic tourists may help fill the gap.

Apparently Nolinor was chartered by the Canadian government to repatriate Canadians from Morocco, on board a B732, a day prior to the AC flight.

It flew YMX-YYR-KEF-SNN-CMN-SNN-KEF-YYR-YUL, 2 days ago.

Frame used was C-GNLN, an ex. Royal Air Maroc bird. What are the odds !
