Thanks guys. Fingers crossed for the interviews. I really like Edmonton as well. More artsy and gay friendly than Calgary from what I hear. But honestly cannot wait to move and make new friends (which is gonna be hard I guess since I am in my 30s now). I also hear that the food scene in both cities is pretty great these days. Foodie here. So excited about that :)

If you need any help finding your way around E-town, looking for fun things to do, etc., send me a DM!

AKL-YYZ would be one of the longest flights in the world. I don't see the market existing to make that viable.

Does this mean WS is going to start flying to China soon...?

That's interesting. Amazing what happens when new non-YYZ routes get opened up eh.

Not likely. Far more likely it means that WS will start codesharing on Xiamen's YVR-XMN, beyond XMN destinations and Xiamen will do the same beyond YVR.

YUL April 2019 stats have been posted:

Domestic: 565,166 (+5.2%)
Transborder: 375,055 (+1.8%)
International: 627,223 (+8.3%)
Total: 1,567,444 (+5.5%)

https://www.admtl.com/sites/default/...et_2019_EN.pdf

Pretty good, all things considered. Domestic increase is the highest it's been all year. No doubt helped by the Max grouding and cancelation of YHZ/YYT-LHR. AC is funneling as much as it can through YUL.

YTD totals:

Domestic: 2,079,822 (+3.1%)
Transborder: 1,476,739 (+3.1%)
International: 2,688,378 (+10.8%)
Total: 6,244,939 (+6.3%)

Groupe Mach makes its interest in Transat official with a rival bid to Air Canada’s

MONTREAL — Air Canada has competition in its bid for Transat, now that a rival suitor has stepped up with an offer worth $14 per share, topping Air Canada’s offer of $13 per share. Quebec-based real estate developer Groupe Mach has come forward with the new bid, causing trading in Transat shares to come to a halt. The shares closed at $11.84 on the TSE on Monday.

According to Groupe Mach, the offer is the culmination of a process that began when it approached Transat in January. Groupe Mach’s offer includes a commitment to keep Transat’s head office, executive team and centre of decision-making in Montreal. The news comes almost 3 weeks after Air Canada and Transat announced they had entered into an exclusive agreement, with Air Canada looking to buy the company in a transaction valued at $520 million.

On May 16 Transat said it had agreed to a 30-day period of exclusive negotiations with Air Canada pursuant to a letter of intent contemplating a transaction by which Air Canada would acquire all of the shares of Transat at a price of $13 per share. When Transat announced on April 30 that it had received interest from more than one company, interested suitors started coming out of the woodwork. One of those suitors was Groupe Mach.

At that time, Vincent Chiara, who owns Groupe Mach, said: “We had the idea of building a portfolio in the hospitality industry and they had a platform and projects in their plans to build exactly that,” referring to Transat’s $750-million plan to develop a hotel chain in Mexico’s Riviera Maya and the Caribbean. He said Transat’s fleet of about 40 planes is particularly appealing to Groupe Mach, which until now has focused on Quebec real estate. “They have the means to move the passengers who go to the destination … they have an important capacity to fill rooms and with this capacity, we eliminate a lot of risks for hotel development. “Of course, we want to privatize … our proposal is to buy out all the shareholders,” he added.

Groupe Mach also said the transaction would be subject to conditions that include “Transat terminating its current process with Air Canada prior to entering into any definitive binding acquisition agreement with Air Canada.” The Montreal developer also said that no layoffs at Transat or its subsidiaries would result from the would-be deal.

“The public markets are not the proper setting for Transat’s 2018-2022 strategic plan, particularly its hotel development strategy which shall require several years for any meaningful returns to be realized in face of pressures of immediate results from the public markets.”

The other blockbuster airline deal in the making this year, Onex’s acquisition of WestJet, would take WestJet private.

With the proposed deal, Spanish real estate developer TM Grupo Inmobiliario would contribute about $15 million in cash in exchange for a minority equity stake in Transat after the proposed agreement closed. TM would also roll over its three hotels in Mexico to Transat.

2019 Q1 international numbers

1. YYZ 7,902,076‬ (+4.2%)
2. JFK 7,341,211 (+7.3%)

11. EWR 3,135,257 (+4.3%)
12. ORD 3,008,581
13. ATL 2,960,026 (+0.1%)

YYZ is above JFK for top spot so far. YVR has gained 2 spots so far in Q1, and YUL has gained 3 spots.

US airports tend to see weaker international numbers in winter, whereas our Canadian snowbirds help our top three airports pull ahead in Q1. Things should stabilize for the rest of the year, and YYZ and YVR could very well end up finishing the year in #2 and #11 spot, same as last year.

ATL has virtually no growth so far this year, so YUL could very well end up ahead of it by the end of the year, in #12.

I heard a rumour that Onex wants to buy Westjet and than sell it off to an American Airline most likely Delta.

Then I found this opinion article about the sale to Onex.

Quote:

Taking United out of the equation, Delta seems to be the logical buyer, given the advanced state of its existing business relationship with WestJet. But buying WestJet from Onex would enable American Airlines to stymie Delta, open a presently protected market for the Oneworld alliance and secure a large share of cross-border traffic in one move.

Anyway Could an American Airline own and operate a Canadian Airline?

Under current law, foreign entities can own up to 49% of an airline, and no single non-Canadian, individually or in association, can control more than 25% of the airline's voting stock.

https://www.otc-cta.gc.ca/eng/public...transportation

Canadians also have to Control in Fact a Canadian airline, meaning "the power, whether exercised or not, to control the strategic decision-making activities of an enterprise and to manage and run its day-to-day operations," according to the Canadian Transportation Agency.

Decent April pax #s out of YVR and YUL, generally. Total international (transborder+int.) very similar between the two (YVR +5.4% and YUL +5.7%), YVR helped by stronger transborder #s and YUL by international. YVR just squeaked past YUL for total international (1,092,957 vs. 1,002,278). Canadian airports definitely continue punching above their weight compared to American airprots. PS, odd that YVR posted stats before YYC, usually YUL and YYC are first.

I emailed YVR on Tuesday to ask when the stats would be published. Ask and ye shall receive: up they went on Wednesday!

While YVR's year on year is decent, the airport is up against its physical limits at certain prime time banks and until the current expansion is complete we're unlikely to see a return to the blistering growth of the last half-decade, assuming there is latent demand for such renewed growth.

I expect that the current generation of fleet renewals (A220 and 737Maxes coming on stream in volume for domestic and transborder traffic, and for international continued A321, A350, 787 deliveries and the introduction of 777Xs) will cumulatively unlock upgauging-led growth while proving out new routes.

zahav Jun 7, 2019 8:05 PM

I think there is still some spare capacity due to the remote stands in operation, but yes in general the terminal check-in/security/etc capacity is an issue still. But I think it is more due to the massive growth of the last few years, so these numbers are fine. Actually surprised transborder and Asia growth % are as high as they are, that is mostly due to higher LFs I'd say, since actual capacity hasn't changed much May 2018-2019.

Separately, OAG posted it's list of airports with the most international destinations in Canada. YYZ topped the list, YUL in 4th, YVR is 9th. This isn't traffic related at all, simply the actual # of international destinations. YYZ's massive US destination list, along with the Carribean, puts it well ahead of 2nd place JFK. The article didn't post a link to the actual report and I think OAG is a paid site, but if anyone has their hands on it, let us know the destination count for the rest of the list :)

I like this fact from the results.

"Canadian airports also dominate the list of best hubs for turnaround times, with Montreal-Trudeau International Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport posting the best on-time performance (OTP) rates, taking first and second spots respectively."
