AKL-YYZ would be one of the longest flights in the world. I don't see the market existing to make that viable.

YUL April 2019 stats have been posted:
Domestic: 565,166 (+5.2%) Transborder: 375,055 (+1.8%) International: 627,223 (+8.3%) Total: 1,567,444 (+5.5%) https://www.admtl.com/sites/default/...et_2019_EN.pdf Pretty good, all things considered. Domestic increase is the highest it's been all year. No doubt helped by the Max grouding and cancelation of YHZ/YYT-LHR. AC is funneling as much as it can through YUL. YTD totals: Domestic: 2,079,822 (+3.1%) Transborder: 1,476,739 (+3.1%) International: 2,688,378 (+10.8%) Total: 6,244,939 (+6.3%) |

YVR April 2019 traffic update is up
YVR has published its April 2019 traffic numbers. Some highlights follow:
Domestic - APRIL 984,161 (+1.8%) | YTD 3,808,017 (+2.4%) Transborder - APRIL 520,894 (+5.1%) | YTD 2,048,262 (+3.4%) Asia Pacific - APRIL 373,688 (+7.2%) | YTD 1,492,596 (+5.9%) Europe - APRIL 97,704 (+3.2%) | YTD 328,683 (+0.4%) Misc. - APRIL 100,671 (+3.4%) | YTD 434,438 (+1.8%) Total International - APRIL 1,092,957 (+5.4%) | YTD 4,303,979 (+3.9%) TOTAL (ALL SECTORS) - APRIL 2,077,118 (+3.7%) | YTD 8,111,996 (+3.2%) Air Cargo - APRIL 24,536 (-4.8%) | YTD 94,818 (-3.1%) Runway movements (JETS) - APRIL 12,975 (+8.1%) | YTD 38,684 (-19.4%) Runway movements (TURBO-PROP) - APRIL 9,391 (-1.1%) | YTD 25,895 (-30.9%) Runway movements (ALL) - APRIL 22,914 (-0.9%) | YTD 68,485 (-25.5%) Source Something seems off with the runway movement numbers. |

YUL 3,162,839 (+8.6%) 11. EWR 3,135,257 (+4.3%) 12. ORD 3,008,581 13. ATL 2,960,026 (+0.1%) YYZ is above JFK for top spot so far. YVR has gained 2 spots so far in Q1, and YUL has gained 3 spots. US airports tend to see weaker international numbers in winter, whereas our Canadian snowbirds help our top three airports pull ahead in Q1. Things should stabilize for the rest of the year, and YYZ and YVR could very well end up finishing the year in #2 and #11 spot, same as last year. ATL has virtually no growth so far this year, so YUL could very well end up ahead of it by the end of the year, in #12. |
I heard a rumour that Onex wants to buy Westjet and than sell it off to an American Airline most likely Delta.
Then I found this opinion article about the sale to Onex. Quote:
Anyway Could an American Airline own and operate a Canadian Airline? |

https://www.otc-cta.gc.ca/eng/public...transportation Canadians also have to Control in Fact a Canadian airline, meaning "the power, whether exercised or not, to control the strategic decision-making activities of an enterprise and to manage and run its day-to-day operations," according to the Canadian Transportation Agency. |
Decent April pax #s out of YVR and YUL, generally. Total international (transborder+int.) very similar between the two (YVR +5.4% and YUL +5.7%), YVR helped by stronger transborder #s and YUL by international. YVR just squeaked past YUL for total international (1,092,957 vs. 1,002,278). Canadian airports definitely continue punching above their weight compared to American airprots. PS, odd that YVR posted stats before YYC, usually YUL and YYC are first.

While YVR's year on year is decent, the airport is up against its physical limits at certain prime time banks and until the current expansion is complete we're unlikely to see a return to the blistering growth of the last half-decade, assuming there is latent demand for such renewed growth. I expect that the current generation of fleet renewals (A220 and 737Maxes coming on stream in volume for domestic and transborder traffic, and for international continued A321, A350, 787 deliveries and the introduction of 777Xs) will cumulatively unlock upgauging-led growth while proving out new routes. |
I think there is still some spare capacity due to the remote stands in operation, but yes in general the terminal check-in/security/etc capacity is an issue still. But I think it is more due to the massive growth of the last few years, so these numbers are fine. Actually surprised transborder and Asia growth % are as high as they are, that is mostly due to higher LFs I'd say, since actual capacity hasn't changed much May 2018-2019.
Separately, OAG posted it's list of airports with the most international destinations in Canada. YYZ topped the list, YUL in 4th, YVR is 9th. This isn't traffic related at all, simply the actual # of international destinations. YYZ's massive US destination list, along with the Carribean, puts it well ahead of 2nd place JFK. The article didn't post a link to the actual report and I think OAG is a paid site, but if anyone has their hands on it, let us know the destination count for the rest of the list :) https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/toronto...-oag-1.4454359 |
I like this fact from the results.
"Canadian airports also dominate the list of best hubs for turnaround times, with Montreal-Trudeau International Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport posting the best on-time performance (OTP) rates, taking first and second spots respectively." |
