What is desperately needed in Toronto is to do something about that T1 gate area used for small regional flights to the US. That place is sub-par in every way compared to virtually every other aspect of the airport.

Reactivation of the infield terminal would also be a positive. Send the international charter flights over there.

Now we know what that 767 on YYC-NRT is doing next winter.

Agreed on both fronts. The transborder area at YYZ is an embarrassment.

I'm guessing that the international charters probably don't contribute much to overall congestion at YYZ but if it would make a difference, reviving the infield terminal for that purpose would make sense.

To isaidso's point above, T1 worked best when it was new and had some excess capacity... now it just feels cramped and congested just about all the time. There was a time when the international pier had room to spread out a bit even in the evening peak departure hours. These days it's just an absolute beehive filled with people. It's hard to find a seat at the gate or in the lounge. The passenger experience is starting to deteriorate a bit... YYZ T1 has gone from being a pleasure (as it was in the 2000s) to another thing you just have to endure.

That area is purportedly where the new pier is going to be built. I agree, it's an unfriendly mess at present.

The infield terminal is problematic for getting passengers to and from. Although it has landside access from Midfield Road, there is no where for parking. Busing plane loads of passengers over from T1/T3 isn't a great experience either. I could see it being used for something like Sunwing with point-to-point flights. But really it's a no-go for any airline that will have connecting passengers.

esquire Apr 10, 2018 3:44 PM

^ That's why putting the charters there makes sense... the passengers don't have same airline/alliance connections.

I would say send AirTransat and Sunwing. Basically any international flight that is on an airline that does not interline with anyone. Some of the others like WOW or Azores may also work over there.

That opens up gate space in the international departure area.

I remember that for awhile back in the late ‘70s…..Bar Harbor Airlines offered service to Boston from Sherbrooke.

Interesting thought. Is there any possibility that Sherbrooke could be considered as a potential low cost hub for no frills airlines (and charters) like Abbotsford and Hamilton???

I would not have considered this to be a natural route-pair, but I hope this does well.......

I could see this as Westjet's way of trying to break into the Quebec market more. Quebec is one of the weakest markets for Westjet.

Connections to Burlington VT were considered a few years ago, not sure if it is still planned (as far as I know it looks dead in the water but perhaps lio could enlighten us).

Service is until October 26, albeit at 3x weekly between Sept 8 and October 26. That french presser does mention the possibility of WS extending the service into the winter season, if the skiers support the route.

Official presser in english.

No.

Short runway, no real infrastructure to handle the influx of several 737s/A320s, and most importantly, far from Montreal (and Quebec City), compared to Abbotsford and Hamilton, which are both much closer to Vancouver and Toronto, respectively.

If montreal will have a no frills airport, it will be YHU. Not YSC. Even with YHU, there is a slim chance of that happening in the short-medium term, but at least they have plans to build a terminal building. So it`s a good start.

Even YMX has a greater chance of being a no frills airport compared to YSC. A terminal building would be needed, obviously. But let's not reopen that can of worms !

This is WestJet soaking up excess idle capacity in their system. Basically ripping apart the couch looking for spare change.

I would hazard a guess there are 1 of 2 possibilities.
(1) WS held back transcon flying in case an ULCC unexpectedly started operations.
(2) WS is finding their max8 introduction to be going better than expected. They can deploy extra capacity immediately.

I agree, adding YXU-YVR is definitely just a way to soak up excess capacity. But still, WSroute planners would have numerous city pairs to choose from and other existing routes they could deploy "spare" aircraft on, so they would've had some figures to back up these additions. But I am jealous YYC got YQB lol I hope AC Rouge adds YVR-YQB as part of their proposed increase in Canadian flying :)

And still no one wants to take a stab at Quebec city - Moncton??

(OK maybe I want it since I had to that flight a ton a few years ago for work and annoyed me I had to connect in Montreal).

Good move for Westjet to feed the Calgary Hub, cruise ships have picked up a lot out of Quebec city and to me still the most gorgeous city in the country.

Makes it much easier for people in Quebec city to head to the Rockies or BC.
