Kenilworth Ave.
and
East Hamilton

I never really knew East Hamilton, these are the few photos I took
in that part of the city over the years, mostly on Kenilworth Ave.

Kenilworth Ave. is the main thoroughfare from the East Mountain to the steel mills and port area.

Beach Road, not anywhere near the beach, but led there in the old days.
Beach Road still has a bus route and runs through a small neighbourhood called McAnulty tucked-in beside Dofasco.

The Derby is probably demolished by now, to be replaced with a shiny new Drug Store.
With beer priced out of the competition, pharmacies are free to take over.

Not too bad in the daytime

xzmattzx Apr 23, 2009 4:33 AM

This is the Hamilton that I think the average Joe pictures in his mind.

dugdogmaster Apr 23, 2009 4:45 AM

Wow:cheers:

LMich Apr 23, 2009 5:55 AM

Rough, no doubt, but as with any of these places, full of character.

Look like dude's yelling at you. Ha!

Such an interesting city...

Oh, what stories these storefronts tell!

Man, that is one ugly ass town.

In a good way.

peanut gallery Apr 23, 2009 6:50 PM

Gritty areas can be so fascinating. Like others said, lot's of character and stories embedded in these shots. I really like the library building.

kcexpress69 Apr 23, 2009 8:18 PM

Interesting part of town!! Thanks for showing us!! :)

jowens Apr 23, 2009 8:32 PM

Love Grit!!

Chelsea Spy Apr 23, 2009 9:03 PM

great gritty thread

dktshb Apr 23, 2009 9:12 PM

It may be rough but it sure is enjoyable to view. That part of town has some character. Thanks for sharing!

Evergrey Apr 24, 2009 12:50 AM

excellent collection, Flar...

this type of "endless" 4-lane commercial corridor reminds me of Cleveland

Robert Pence Apr 24, 2009 3:18 AM

Excellent photography. The scenes make me shiver.

flar Apr 27, 2009 2:36 AM

Thanks!

There is plenty to explore in the east end. There is a huge area of East Hamilton built in the first few decades of the 1900s that helps define the city in many minds. I would have especially liked to get more residential shots, the houses further east are a bit less interesting visually than many of my other tours, but there are a few interesting neighbourhoods and some history that I would have liked to show.

nice set

Jibba Apr 27, 2009 3:51 AM

Heavy, to be sure. Wonderfully captured by you, flar, as always.

boden Apr 27, 2009 2:01 PM

We are lucky to see these quickly disappearing streetscapes! Especially with you taking these incredible pictures!
I guess Ottawa seems almost sterile after Hamilton doesn't it?

You've got a knack for starting your threads with dynamite photos.
