Third Church of Christ Science
I was over at McPherson Square today and saw this excitement. Good riddance to this brutalist turd!

We've looked at this building before, but seeing it from the Union Station is very interesting to me. I know forumers have talked about the Hopscotch Bridge before, I think the integration is interesting.

They needed to redevelop that loud, narrow-sidewalked hopscotch bridge 5 years ago...a calatrava-esque structure that would make crossing the train tracks much more inviting.
Would also look nice next to that new housing |
Current plans have the Hopscotch Bridge being replaced in the next 3-5 years. I have no idea with what, though. I like your idea, DC Denizen.

NoMA development
Skanska can go forward with 88 M St. NE, but it won't. Not now.
By Michael Neibauer Washington Business Journal March 25, 2014 "The first phase of Skanska USA Commercial Development Inc.'s 900,000-square-foot mixed-use project in NoMa has been approved for construction, but there are no plans to put a shovel in the ground, yet. In 88 M St. NE, Skanska will build a 315,000-square-foot office building with ground floor retail (likely a large restaurant) located a block from the NoMa Metro station. The 12-story structure will include three levels of underground parking, a 5,000-square-foot tenant-only fitness center and a sky deck. Skanska has not inked an anchor tenant yet for 88 M, though it was one of a half dozen projects pitched as a future Washington Post headquarters. A Skanska official said the permit was pulled in order to be ready to go at any time, either with a tenant or speculatively, but actual construction is some time away. The permit is good for two years..." http://www.bizjournals.com/washingto...t-it-wont.html |

UPDATE: "Third Church of Christ partnered with a developer, ICG Properties, on a plan to replace the concrete block with an office building that would include a new sanctuary. What followed was one of the city’s most high-profile historic preservation battles in the District’s recent memory, ending with then-planning director Harriet Tregoning, acting as the mayor’s agent for historic preservation, issuing a 28-page ruling allowing the building to be torn down. After the ruling ICG partnered with the JBG Cos. of Chevy Chase on the project, won zoning approval for their church-office project and inked law firm Miller & Chevalier to a lease for 70 percent of the building..." http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/c...st-d-c-church/ |
Third Church of Christ Science
The Washington Business Journal has an article with a rendering of the new building. Unfortunately, I can't repost the images from the WBJ articles.

Pics I took of a building reclad, 2011/2014; this is at the Waterfront Metro and this is one of two identical buildings that bookended the (demolished) Waterside Mall.

The most recent Census numbers have thrust the District into the Hot 100 for counties with population growth over the past three years. And this is percentage gain, not total population growth. To see DC competing with The Villages for newcomers is quite a reversal of fortune.
