Powhatan, VA

Powhatan (pronounced "POH-ha-ten") is an unincorporated community in, and county seat of, Powhatan County. Powhatan was named for the chief of 32 tribes in Virginia. The town was laid out and settled in 1777, when the county was created from Cumberland County. Powhatan was originally called "Scottville", after Revolutionary War general Charles Scott, but was given its current name in 1836.
