Official Sports Stadiums Thread
Discuss sports stadiums of the past present and future here.
I have made a couple of reports already with help of Wikipedia. ROGERS CENTRE My Rating: 4/5 Stars http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...o_Sept1-05.jpg Rogers Centre home of the Toronto Blue Jays (MLB) Rogers Centre opened on June 3, 1989 and cost $250,000,000 to complete. Rogers Centre was designed by Rod Robbie and Michael Allen and was constructed by Ellis-Don Construction of London, Ontario. Wikipedia: (Background Information) Quote:
SkyDome, as it was then called, was the first major team sports arena in North America to sport a functional, fully retractable roof. It also features a hotel overlooking the ballpark and a Hard Rock Cafe in the stadium! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...x-DSCN4401.jpg Large Jumbotron Besides baseball, Rogers Centre hosts Canadian football, monster truck rallys, concerts, an NCAA bowl game, and more. It hosted the infamous 2002 All-Star Game which ended in a tie thanks to Bud Selig. This isn't Soccer! Miller Park features a retractable roof and plenty other of fun features. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...rkPanorama.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ay_25_2005.jpg Also the famous Sausage Race is held at Brewers games which is a fan favorite. When a home run is hit by the Brewers their mascot Bernie Brewer slides down the slide and waves a flag. Quote:

I have been to Miller Park plenty of times for Brewers/Cubs games and it is a very nice stadium with plenty of things to do. It features a cool arcade and plenty of other cool features that make it different from other parks. Dimensions Left Field - 344 ft / 105 m Left-Center - 370 ft / 113 m Center Field - 400 ft / 122 m Right-Center - 374 ft / 114 m Right Field - 345 ft / 105 m Capacity: 43,000 Credit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller_Park ______________________________________________________________________ Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome Home Of The Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Football and the Minnesota Vikings http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ame_990826.JPG My Rating: 2/5 Stars-Good design just not a place for sports. Too many flaws. The Metrodome opened on April 3, 1982 Major Events Held At The Metrodome: Quote:

Jacobs Field-Home of the Cleavland Indians
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...eldLogo150.PNG http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...cobs_Field.jpg My Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars Opened on April 4, 1994 Capacity: 43,345 Dimensions Left Field - 325 ft (99 m) Left-Center - 370 ft (113 m) Center Field - 405 ft (123.5 m) Right-Center - 375 ft (114 m) Right Field - 325 ft (99 m) Ballpark firsts Quote:

In 2005, I attended a Tigers/Indians game at Jacobs Field. The stadium is pretty nice. The inside is nice and it is located right next to the Gund Arena home of the Cavs. The location is nice as well right in the middle of the city. Overall it isn't the best stadium it kind of looks like US Cellular but it is pretty good. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...scoreboard.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Field_2003.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...x-DSCN4653.JPG _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Comerica Park-Home of the Detroit Tigers http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...arkLogo150.PNG http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...I-Panorama.jpg Opened On April 11, 2000 Capacity: 41,070 My Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars-It is a nice stadium with plenty of things to do. The merry-go-round and ferris wheel are good for the kids. First game Quote:
Quote:
It is also located right next to Ford Field home of the Lions. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...y-go-round.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...2C_Detroit.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...rris_wheel.JPG http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...px-2mnivqp.jpg Dimensions Left Field - 345 ft / 105 m Left-Center - 370 ft / 113 m Center Field - 420 ft / 128 m Right-Center - 365 ft / 111 m Right Field - 330 ft / 101 m ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ U.S. Cellular Field-Home of the Chicago White Sox http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ular_Field.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...eldLogo150.PNG My Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars AKA Little League Park Opened April 18, 1991 Capacity 44,321 (1991) 45,936 (2001) 47,098 (2003) 40,615 (2004) Dimensions Left Field - 330 ft (100.5 m) Left-Center - 375 ft (114 m) Center Field - 400 ft (122 m) Right-Center - 375 ft (114 m) Right Field - 335 ft (102 m) Backstop - 60 ft (18 m) LOL :D Formerly knows as Comiskey Park 2 many people are angry about the name change and think Comiskey Park was tradition. The Coolest feature of US Cellular is the exploding scoreboard which goes off after every White Sox home run (not many) Renovations Quote:
In my opinion US Cellular is an okay ballpark. The only problem I have with it is so small. Players hit pop ups that get out because the walls are so far in. Overall not bad. http://www.derekmiller.us/baseball/i...ar01_thumb.jpg http://www.derekmiller.us/baseball/i...ar09_thumb.jpg http://www.derekmiller.us/baseball/i...ar07_thumb.jpg http://www.derekmiller.us/baseball/i...ar03_thumb.jpg Credits: http://www.derekmiller.us/baseball/uscellular.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Cellular_Field __________________________________________________________________________________________________ |
Tropicana Field-Home of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...eldLogo150.PNG http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...cana_field.jpg My Rating 1 out of 5-Worst stadium in baseball. Opened March 3, 1990 Capacity 43,500 (2004) Dimensions Left Field - 315 ft Left-Center - 370 ft Center Field - 404 ft Right-Center - 370 ft Right Field - 322 ft Backstop - 50 ft Tropicana field is probably the worst stadium in baseball. It is so ugly both inside and out. Criticisms Quote:

Opened April 6, 1992 Capacity 48,262 (1992) Dimensions Left Field - 333 ft (101.5 m) Left-Center - 364 ft (110.9 m) Left-Center (deep) - 410 ft (125 m) Center Field - 400 ft (121.9 m) (Not posted) Right-Center - 373 ft (113.7 m) Right Field - 318 ft (96.9 m) Most memorable games Quote:
My Experience: I didn't exactly see a game here but I did walk in on an Oriole off-day. The allow you to walk into around the stadium. The longest building on the east coast lies in right field of the stadium the B&W Warehouse and they have little baseball markers in the ground or on the wall to show you the longest home runs at the park. I think Ken Griffey Jr. hit the longest which hit the wall. Also Babe Ruth's monument is located there. Overall a nice ballpark. http://derekmiller.us/baseball/image...en01_thumb.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...uth_statue.jpg Credit: http://derekmiller.us/baseball/oriole.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oriole_...t_Camden_Yards _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Kauffman Stadium- Home of the Kansas City Royals http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...uffmanstad.jpg Opened April 10, 1973 Capacity 40,625 (1973) My Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars Dimensions Left Field - 330 ft Left-Center - 385 ft Center Field - 410 ft Right-Center - 385 ft Right Field - 330 ft History Quote:

It is a nice ballpark with a waterfall in center field that explodes during home runs. On the scoreboard they show a rally monkey which rallies the crowd and gets them loud. http://derekmiller.us/baseball/image...el01_thumb.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...dium_-_WBC.jpg Credit: http://derekmiller.us/baseball/angel.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_Stadium_of_Anaheim |
lovely lists you got here...but wheres Petco Park and Qualcomm Stadium?:P
|
One interesting fact is that many of these stadiums were designed by the same firm.
The future Twins Park Camden Yarks Jaacobs Field US Cellular Comerica Park were all designed by HOK Sport (which was founded by architects involved in Kauffman stadium as well) Other baseball parks they have designed include: Coors Field Minute Miad Park AT&T Park PNC Park Great American Ball Park Citizens Bank Park Busch Stadium (new one, obviously) Nationals Ballpark as well as the new Mets and Yanks parks. |
|
Eagerly awaiting your impression of AT&T Park (also from HOK Sport) which I love as a piece of architecture and its integration into the city even though I'm not much or a sports fan:

the thread is about all kind of stadiums or just baseball stadiums?
Just north american stadiums or world stadiums? |
AT&T Park is my favorite ballpark besides Wrigley.
I love how it sits right on the bay. And this thread can be about any kinds of stadiums US or not. |

Safco is another great stadium.
Top 10 Stadiums according to MSN: Coors Field - Denver, Colo. Fenway Park - Boston, Mass. Jacobs Field - Cleveland, Ohio Miller Park - Milwaukee, Wis. Oriole Park at Camden Yards - Baltimore, Md. At&T Park - San Francisco, Calif. PNC Park - Pittsburgh, Pa. Safeco Field - Seattle, Wash. Wrigley Field - Chicago, Ill. Yankee Stadium - New York, N.Y. http://cityguides.msn.com/specials/d...97358>1=9161 And yes talk about arenas in here as well and college stadiums anything. The American Airlines Center in Dallas is defiantly the best basketball stadium. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...nes_Center.jpg It has won many awards: Quote:

Canwest Global Park in Winnipeg is a nice little ballpark...home of the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern League (independent AA)
opened in 1999, seats 7000. the Goldeyes have had for the past number of years, the highest attendance among all 58 teams in the six independent leagues and higher than 13 of the 30 teams playing AAA baseball. http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/9...titled1am4.jpg http://mysite.verizon.net/charliesba...h/canwest2.jpg http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/921/ball3gp5.jpg http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/5339/ball4rv9.jpg http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/1...ntown69cn1.jpg |
Very nice. Do they play in the Northern League? I think Winnapeg had a team there.
I live 5 minutes away from a Northern League stadium Schaumburg, Illinois and I have season tickets. Alexian Field is their home and it uses some Wrigley Field aspects: Scoreboard, seats, and ivy. http://www.ballparkreviews.com/schaumb/schaumb3.jpg http://www.minorleagueballparks.com/alexsb.jpg http://www.ballparkreviews.com/schaumb/schaumb.jpg http://mysite.verizon.net/charliesba...h/alexian3.jpg http://www.nlfan.com/chicago/tgsb_alexian.jpg http://mitp.northwestern.edu/pics/Fl...424Alexian.JPG |

The Metrodump does not have Asto-turf by the way. 3 years ago they switched to Field Turf. Which is still fake but looks and plays almost like the real thing.

the Arizona Cardinals facility is so nice!

I read (and agreed with) a critique that really crushed them for not using any solar panels on the skin of the structure. Can you imagine how much exposed surface area there is on that thing that just bakes all day in the desert sun? They would have had free electricity for the life of the building. |
UofP Stadium definitely looks nice, but it kind of sits out in Glendale with nothing around it (although that's changing) and looks kind of ominous and imposing from the freeway out there by itself (er...next to Jobbing.com Arena, home of the Coyotes).
|
I love the stadium for Michigan Football.
I have been there myself a couple of times and it is huge. It can hold over 100,000 people and it sells out every game. |

^nice list:)

Thanks, Wikipedia helped a ton with compiling pictures and notes.
Just hard to get them all. Hopefully I can finish NBA and NFL soon and get this list done. |
im looking forward to the NFL one;)

Yeah NFL Should be easy. The NBA is a hard one because there is not much info on it.

New Detroit Red Wings Arena
I've got a plan for a new Detroit Red Wings Arena at my website. Its based upon the Old Olympia Stadium. The site has some pretty cool drawings and floorplans, though they're amateur and not quite as polished as some of the other drawings at this site. Chcek it out at http://www.newolympia.blogspot.com
I would post some pictures, but they just come up as red X's. |
^that should be a nice project ;)
|
Yeah the Red Wings are very popular and deserve a nice home.

There was a movement in the mid 1990s to place the new Reds ballpark on the eastern edge of Over-the-Rhine (dubbed by many as "Broadway Commons") that would have been the boon for development that the area north of Downtown Cincinnati so desperately needs. GABP is an okay place to see a game, but its too disconnected from the rest of Downtown thanks to Fort Washington Way, and too disconnected from Newport thanks to the Ohio River. |
I am sorry, but a stadium list is not complete without discussion on PNC park. This stadium's design is a true masterpiece. The way it blends the game in with the city and rivers is great. I only visited 3 stadiums so I may be ignorant on which on is the best. However, having a discussion about baseball stadiums and not mentioning PNC is ludicrous.
ESPN thinks it rates the best: http://espn.go.com/page2/s/ballparks/pncpark.html |
Seriously. PNC Park has, hands down, the best outfield panoramic of any ballpark in the country.
|
You can't have this discussion without mentioning Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.
http://reds.enquirer.com/2002/11/05/...rk800_zoom.jpg |
Am I missing something here? Maybe its my Cincinnati "can't-do" mentality, but what do others see in Great American that makes it a cut above some of the other retro parks (which, in theory, are just a re-hash of the 1960s-70s cookie-cutter type stadia only with better ameneties aka "Since everyone else has one, we've gotta have one too!").
As far as I'm concerned, the story of Great American Ballpark is modern-day Cincinnati in a nutshell: They had the opportunity to build something great (a la a "Place of the Fans" for the 21st Century) in Broadway Commons, or even a ballpark with an outfield that faced Downtown Cincinnati, but in typical fashion, the damn park was built with a view of the wrong side of the Ohio, and despite the sea of red seats (they're the Cincinnati Reds, go figure!), the building's mix of white and concrete (No green? No red beyond the seats? No multicolored seating as an homage to Riverfront ;) ?) is dreadfully sterile compared to modern parks that were built right (Camden Yards or PNC, for example). |
