Rio de Janeiro, July 2021

I spent 8 days of my vacation in Rio de Janeiro. First time there since a day trip back 2015. Loved it. Here some pics:

Also in Botafogo, I loved this bar in an old house. They have amazing drinks. Meza Bar. As it was pandemic time, we arrived earlier. After 1 hour, it got crowded and we left:

Now Downtown. It's usually overlooked by tourists, but it's a big mistake. Rio de Janeiro was Brazil's capital till 1960 and the largest metropolis up to the 1960's, so it has lots of historical stuff there.

On the next pics, we see an area that was under an elevated highway, separating Downtown from the Docks. They put the whole thing down few years ago:

Beautiful photos. I know Rio is much more than a beach town, but rarely see the city’s elegant older buildings. Thanks for posting!

Looks like a great vacation spot.

Thank you Todd! It's Downtown is definitely full of very good and diverse architecture and should not be ignored at all. They even got a Calatrava museum for the 2016 Olympics.

We also must keep in mind Rio is a 12 million metropolis with all the amenities attached to it.

Indeed. I'm a good tourist, knowing how to see everything, even non-touristic stuff, in a short period. Well, I spent eight days on Rio and I kep my agenda busy.

The 210 year old Botanical Garden, founded by the Portuguese King, Dom João VI, when they moved the royal court to Rio fleeing Napoleon.

Those palm trees are as old as the garden itself. All of them came from the same plant:

Parque Lage, near the Botanical Garden. It became a tourist hotspot quite recently. Got drunk on the breakfast with their amazing mimosas:

Beautiful!

We "climbed" a small (100m high) and not a very well-known mountain called Morro da Catatumba. We have great views from the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Ipanema, Leblon, Jardim Botânico and Corcovado/Christ the Redeemer:

Rio is a beautiful city. There are so much more to see then just the beaches. Glad you showed downtown as well.

Downtown is a bit tricky to photograph. It's full of tall buildings and narrow streets so it's hard to get the right angles. It's a place you must be there to understand it.

They were bold enough to place a tram right through Downtown's main avenue back in 2016. It make the region to feel much more confortable.

One thing I didn't have the time to explore properly, was the churches Downtown Rio. They're amazing, specially the barroque, like from a big European city.

nice to see. i really enjoyed downtown rio. maybe even more than the beach neighborhoods. can i say that given rio's famous beaches? :haha:

Free travel? I mean no quarantine or anything?

Thebestofeverything Mar 6, 2022 12:37 AM

I've been to most of the major cities on the planet and Rio remains the most beautiful I have visited. My favorite area to chill in is Lagoa. I hope you will post some pics of the beautiful historical buildings in centro as well as of some of the newest buildings out in Barra da Tijuca.
