That whole section of Midtown West for the most part is new or recent within the last 10 years. If you check out aerials of Midtown West from lets say 1980's onward, and compare it to now, the change is profound. 100's of towers added. I say last 10 years, even tough the comparison date is from 1984, because if you look at the completion dates, a ton of towers have risen between 34th to 65th street within Midtown West from 2008 to 2018.

Here is a comparison:

I know it's been said a million times, but this tower most definitely needs a spire.

Barnett, don't let us down. CPT won't be the tallest in Midtown for very long, unless it gets a spire. Tower Fifth and others will surpass it.

I agree, new york is a city of spires, there should be an ordinance stating that any building above x feet requires a spire, lol.

Aesthetically for now it would work. But we also have to look forward, in the future, to the Park Lane redevelopment in which that site arguably is one of the best in the city. Location, what it could command in sell out, and development rights. Whatever rises there, needs to set the bar high. As any bad design, could tarnish the skyline.

Or at least the tallest. But it's hard to know what would be the tallest. It just needs to be something that's an exclamation point on top of the building, like a reward for being that high and pleasing us visually. (that could be a spire, crown, or just a magnificent top like 53w53)

This just doesn't really do it.

I don’t understand what’s “dull” about this building, except maybe in comparison to 111 or 53W53. And even then, I wouldn’t call it dull so much as I would more understated. It’s still a very attractive tower in its own right, and should stand out plenty between the cantilever, setbacks, and lighted crown. It may draw more from modernism as opposed to 111’s Art Deco aesthetic, but I don’t see how that necessarily makes it “dull.”

I agree,

It's no more dull than Sears or the WTC (new and old).

Granted it's mainly awesome for its height like the aforementioned buildings, which is okay too.

chris08876 Feb 11, 2019 4:44 AM

Just for statistics. If completed today, it would rank as the 13th tallest tower in the world. It would just take a 200 foot spire to push it to the top 8th or 7th spot, if completed today with spire.

Skyguy_7 Feb 11, 2019 2:00 PM

^^^^ Judging by the glass at about the height of the top of Hearst tower in that 2nd to last photo, we are in for a real treat once the blue film is peeled away. This tower is sort of a present waiting to be unwrapped.

Considering 1WTC's uneven complexion, which seemed to have lasted for at least a year, I like the idea the of the protective film here. It will be a magical unveiling and the largest of its kind when the entire tower goes from blue to silver in probably a week's time. :slob:

It ranks even higher if you go by roof/occupied height.

Forgive me, I don't stop by this thread too often. How many more feet to go before top out?
