I find it intriguing how DL suspended YOW indefinitely yet kept YWG even though YWG had even worse transborder numbers than YOW. I wonder if the 75 year NW legacy had anything to do with keeping YWG?

It's clear that the western airports are faring better than the eastern, I think thanks in large part to Flair and the long driving distances that always beef up the west's numbers. Here's YOW August numbers, which are in line with YVR July:

That and the bigger % of international traffic. Unfortunately, I see those coming back to pre-COVID levels much later than domestic traffic.

YYC might take back the 3rd place in 2021.

At this point all the airports are in the gutter, it's splitting hairs of who's worse than who, it's a bleak exercise to even keep posting traffic stats, it's unreal to see those numbers at our major airports, it's really sad actually

Couldn't agree more.

Air Canada and Westjet have cancelled at least 439 flights this month.

thenoflyzone Sep 19, 2020 9:26 PM

Good thing we have all those flights to the North from YUL (Hydro Quebec, Air Creebec, Air Inuit, Canadian North/First Air, etc), and a decent amount of GA traffic. Or else, this place would be a ghost town if we were to only control AC, WS and TS flights.

Peak 2019, we were doing close to 900 movements a day. Right now, we are at 250-300, at best.

YMX and YHU are back at it in full swing, since they don't have many commercial sked flights. Cargo is booming, and flight schools have resumed ops to pre-COVID levels.

We're bored out of our minds here at Trudeau Intl.

hollywoodcory Sep 19, 2020 10:27 PM

My husband needed to get to Toronto next month and the flights were $240 roundtrip on Air Canada. I have never seen one way tickets let alone a round trip between YYC & YYZ that low before on AC.

YQM in Moncton is limping along, but is doing much better than it's NB counterparts due to cargo flights. The cargo business at the airport is only down 2% since the pandemic started, and is providing the airport with much needed revenue, although they will still have a multimillion operating loss at the end of the year.

Passenger traffic is down over 90%, but this is par for the course for many smaller airports. The one bit of good news recently is that PAL airlines is going to begin a new direct service from Moncton to St. John's NL starting within the next week. This will operate 5x weekly, and will eventually extend to also serve Ottawa as well.

Air Canada has added quite a lot of cargo only flights since the pandemic began.

Here is the schedule. (those marked with CO in the link below - cargo only)

Smart way for KLM to get around the 4 airport rule by clearing everyone at YYC.

Benefiting both Alberta airports too. Clearly taking full advantage of Air Canada's absence.

Just came to share the same news, Moncton. Apparently there’s actually a need for travel between our two cities due to federal civil servants. Surprised it’s our provincial airline doing it. They had mummers to welcome you guys lol

Pretty sure there’s no need to specify “direct”. If it wasn’t, they’d never say St. John’s to Moncton lol

MonctonRad Sep 22, 2020 2:16 PM

:previous:

Not just civil servants (the DFO Gulf Fisheries HQ is in Moncton for example), but also students (Memorial University). Again, for example, we get clinical clerks and residents at the Moncton Hospital from Memorial Medical School, and NB has purchased seats at Memorial Medical School too. Then there are family connections (lots of ex pat Newfoundlanders in Moncton) and potentially tourists. I for one would consider flying to St. John's for a vacation. I've been there before and would go back again.

Not everything needs to be routed through Halifax.........
