Businesses weigh bike plan for Madison Avenue in Midtown Memphis
Lone project proposal would eliminate 2 traffic lanes
The Commercial Appeal

"The lone plan on the table would restrict vehicle through-traffic from the current four lanes to two lanes. The proposal would use the freed-up width to: Establish a center turn lane; Provide on-street parking next to both curbs; Create two bike lanes, one for each direction. Each bike lane is between the parked cars and traffic lanes; And carve out buffers, or "door zones," between the parked cars and bike lanes so cyclists don't slam into opening doors. The bike project -- whatever it becomes -- will stretch from Cooper to Cleveland, nearly 1.5 miles."

It might be to take some of the traffic off of the I-55 bridge. The Hernando-Desoto (I-40) Bridge is in good same and has been retrofitted for earthquakes, but a study was done on the I-55 bridge and it was found that it would be cheaper to build a new bridge rather than to retrofit the existing one. This 3rd bridge could have something to do with that but I can't be sure. I've never seen much traffic on the I-40 bridge, but its 3 lanes on each side, the I-55 bridge is only two lanes on each side, and those two lanes are pretty narrow.

Sorry I don't have a link for the study that was done, it was on a movie that I watched in on of my structures classes in architecture school, but I'm pretty sure the original documentary aired on Discovery or History.
