Spotsvylvania Court House, VA
 
Spotsylvania is an unincorporated community in central Spotsylvania County, and is the seat of Spotsylvania County. The population is around 4,300.

Spotsylvania is best-known as the site of the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, which took place from May 8-21, 1864. The battle was the result of Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign, in which Grant tried to lure Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee to follow him until Grant had favorable conditions to engage him. The battle was the ultimately a inconclusive, yet was the costliest battle of the Overland Campaign, with almost 32,000 casualties.


The Spotsylvania County Courthouse, on Courthouse Road. The courthouse was built in 1840, and follows the Jeffersonian format of a roman temple with wide columns. Buff-colored fireproof brick was used in an extensive renovation in 1900.

The Confederate Cemetery, off of Courthouse Road east of the courthouse. The cemetery was established in 1866.

The Confederate monument in the cemetery was dedicated in 1918.

Heth's Salient Battlefield Site, from the Courthouse Bypass. The battlefield was where Union Gen. Abrose E. Burnside's IX Corps assaulted the eastern face of the Confederate line on May 12, 1864. The battle resulted in around 9,000 Union and 8,000 Confederate casualties.

The Dabney House, on Courthouse Road. The house was built in 1840, and was the only residence in Spotsylvania to survive the Battle of Spotsylvania in May of 1864 during the Civil War.

The name Spotsvylvania itself draws attention already, why there's Sportsvania or Sportsslovakia in mind while looking at it.
