Erie, Pennsylvania

Best summer spot on the Great Lakes.

Waters are so clear and 80 degrees F off Presque Isle.

Last 2 pics are mine, from yesterday. I was high as hell as I was pulling my kayak across a secluded beach to the warmest Great Lake waters.

Nice looking beaches!

For a summer day at the beach my favorite place in Western Canada is the Okanagan.

First is the biggest city, Kelowna, metro are just over 200 000 now.

A quick shot of the skyline

And a couple of the beaches within a short walk from downtown.

Then there is Penticton an hour drive to the south. Population around 50 000.

I don't live in a city (suburb in Central NJ) but NJ has the famous Jersey Shore. Just a few beaches/beach towns.

nice ones. question for the bc/vancouver folks...what is the BEACH OF BEACHES to get a good skyline shot of vancouver?

dubu Aug 21, 2019 1:24 PM

i wonder why square buildings are so popular next to the ocean? if they were cylinder a big wave could flow past buildings without much damage.

Best beach to get a good skyline shot is Jericho IMO. (this is if you want a nice beach in the foreground with the skyline looming in the distance across the bay).

English Bay is my favorite beach if you are looking for more intimate urban interactions between the beach and the city.

Unfortunately, due to the water quality, it is still not recommended to swim in the Anacostia or Potomac Rivers in Washington but the water quality of both rivers has been steadily improving and there is a study to examine creating a public swimming area along the Anacostia by 2025.

With global warming, giving residents a place to cool off during periods of excessive heat is going to become an important public health issue. There was one recent study that found the hottest parts of DC to be 17 degrees warmer than the coolest location in DC on certain days.

many of Boise's parks have sandy beach areas. Many of the reservoirs in the area also have parks; below are just a few located the city (those first two are within city limits on the eastern edge).

My favorite NYC beach is Fort Tilden. It's surrounded by a former U.S. Army base, and it's now part of the National Parks service. That means almost no chance of being ruined by development. It's also a pain in the ass to get to from Manhattan, so that keeps most of the less sophisticated tourists away.

^From here: https://germanamericanabroad.wordpre...t-fort-tilden/

Here's a NY Times slide show from the summer before Sandy: http://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytim...rt-tilden.html

The beach was closed for a couple of years after Sandy in order to recover. The storm wiped out the characteristic sand dunes that served as a barrier between the beach and the deactivated base. I've been a few times this summer and this is the closest it has looked to pre-Sandy so far.

You can also easily see the Manhattan skyline from various points on the Rockaway peninsula. The views are especially good from the Marine Parkway Bridge between the Rockaway peninsula and Brooklyn.

Detroit's Belle Isle Beach is barely a beach... The best thing it has going for it is being located in Belle Isle Park, which is an amazing asset for Detroit. The second best thing that Belle Isle Beach has going for it are great views of the Detroit skyline.

I like the looks/setting of those SF area beaches.

Though I prefer to visit beaches where I can actually go in the water without having my penis shrinking to the size of a pencil eraser and my testicles retreating far up into my abdomen.

Some of my favorite local beaches in the LA/OC area; we've got sandy beaches and rocky beaches with tide pools, cliffs...

All photos taken by me, over the last several years.

There are at least 16 natural beaches in Toronto, plus 2 artificial ones. The most notable though would probably be:

Woodbine, Kew, and Balmy Beach (collectively referred to along with the surrounding neighbourhood as the Beaches). These stretch a combined 3km in the city's east end and is by far the busiest and most popular beach.

Kansas City? Hmmm. I guess maybe you could call this a beach.

Though there are several lakes in the area which I'm sure have something resembling beaches. Sort of.

The Chemist Aug 22, 2019 9:15 AM

For being a coastal city, Shanghai has pretty much shit for beaches.

I guess having to put flooding / typhoon defences everywhere along the coast doesn't help but even without them there wouldn't be much in the line of beaches. Sandy shores just aren't natural on river delta silt.

there actually would be beaches, as there are further upriver from kc, since the missouri river naturally is a meandering braided stream but the corps of engineers has the river strangled to a ditch even though there is almost no barge traffic on the missouri. railroads are king in kansas city.

The nearest beachish sort of thing to Asheville is the beach at Lake Lure, about 45 minutes southeast of town.

basically, although people most definitely swim in it there. north of st. louis it’s...borderline. it’s even semi-clear at times. it’s really the missouri and the illinois that are the “nasty” rivers. the mississippi is this elegant thing that somehow keeps it halfway together. people also kayaked/canoed to that sandbar. between the first lock and the south end of the chain of rocks ship canal theres this naturalized stretch of rapids, a wild island that people camp on within view of downtown, semi-naturalized channel that people paddle in. alton pool north of the first lock is also paddled, sailed, swam but the river “purists” dont like it i guess because its behind a lock.

Nice beach Steely.

Are beach-goers shuttled in by boat or helicopter? Or do they have to cross 12-16(?) lanes of traffic in terror ;-)

P.S. weary of the dumb palm tree photos from Vancouver... but Chicago? Are they replanted every year?

Maybe a new pedestrian bridge to the beach designed by Calatrava is in order. Cheers.

LSD is actually 24 lanes wide now.

~500 pedestrians a year are killed trying to cross it to get to oak Street beach, but that's still less than the city's annual murder tally, so city officials aren't too concerned about it.

I read that LSD is actually wider than the Katy Freeway + the frontage roads/turning lanes outside of the freeway that have been mistakenly included in the freeway lane count.

Sun Belt Aug 25, 2019 7:17 PM

I'd love to go to that beach in Chicago, during the summer.

I went to Montrose Beach on a beautiful, cloudy, windy 28 degree March day. The sand was frozen and the lake resembled a slushy at 7/11. It was really cool to see and hear the waves move the slush around.

I got some really great photos of the skyline from the south facing jetty thing/walkway.

Atlanta

Atlanta's closest and most popular beach is probably Lake Lanier Islands which is about 45 miles northeast of the city at Lake Lanier.

Other than that, anywhere along the Florida panhandle (the "Redneck Riviera") you probably find more people from metro Atlanta than anywhere else, and the Georgia and South Carolina beaches of Savannah (Tybee Island) and Myrtle Beach about all about 3 to 4 hour drives away, depending on where you're starting from in the metro.

Speaking of Atlanta and surrounding areas, Chattanooga has sandy areas and marinas in nearby Harrison Bay. It’s really just an wide part of the Tennessee River but functions as a summer getaway.

No point in Florida is never more than 70 miles from the water, so every city I have lived in or been to there had decent beaches that get more warm and amazing the farther south or west on the peninsula you get. I’ve been to South Beach, Riviera Beach, Palm Beach, and the beaches in Martin and St. Lucie counties.

However, despite their cold temperatures, California’s beaches are very scenic. La Jolla, Santa Monica, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, you name it. Beautiful cliffs, coves, and hills right next to the ocean.

I didn't know that about Chattanooga! Interesting!

My sister lives in Seminole (Tampa Bay area on the St. Pete side) and the whole stretch of beaches there, Reddington, Madiera, Indian Rocks, Clearwater and on and on is just beautiful. We visit her down there all the time.

Southern California waters -- you can trunk it right now -- I was in it yesterday afternoon 67-70 degrees. It's still much cooler than last two summers at this time where it was 75-77+, whereas Monterey's August monthly average is in the 50s, although I think they do have some spots reporting in around 60 right now.

500 people a year die on that one stretch of road?! That's insane. It's not like there's a gross lack of safe access points either.

I assume you're talking about the temperature of the water... because yesterday, I went to the beach to cool down. It was in the 90s where I live in the SGV, and I was hoping for at least upper 70s at the beaches... and when I got to the beach at Dana Point, it was 81 or 82---cooler than the SGV, but still borderline too warm for me, though nice in the shade and with the breeze.

So, for me anyway, I like the beach to be cool/cold.

just an absurd response to an absurd question.

there are pedestrian/bike under/overpasses to get across LSD every 1/4 to 1/2 mile or so.

Chicago could have much much more beach shoreline, I don't understand why they settle for just that little corner. There must be no budget for it.

there are a lot of beaches going north between oak street beach and Evanston, but remarkably few on the south side. I've often wondered why that is.

Milwaukee seems like it should have a lot more beaches, too, and take advantage of that long lake frontage.

uhhhhh, chicago has FAR more beach than just the one little corner of oak street beach.

the city of chicago's public swimming beaches, from north to south:

rogers beach
howard beach
loyola beach
albion beach
lane beach
hollywood beach
foster beach
montrose beach
north avenue beach
ohio street beach
12th street beach
31st street beach
41st street beach
57th street beach
63rd street beach
71st street beach
rainbow beach
calumet beach

that's ~5.5 linear miles of sand swimming beaches within city limits.

it's certainly not miami beach or anything, but that's still a respectable amount of sand swimming beaches for a great lakes city.

especially one on the "wrong" side of the lake where the water currents tend to erode away sand beaches. the west coast of michigan has it easy, the sand just piles up naturally over there.

and yes, there are plans to radically increase the beach and parkland area at oak street, and bury a stretch of LSD, but who knows if it'll ever happen because money.

not true, the southside has 8 beaches to the northside's 10, and some of those northside beaches like lane, howard, and rogers are pretty tiny.

yeah, milwaukee only has 3 sand swimming beaches within city limits.

like chicago, milwuakee is also on the "wrong" side of the lake for sand beaches. the lake currents tend to erode sand away on this side of the lake instead of piling it up like over on the other side in michigan.

That's not the point I was making at all. That beach could easily run all along gold coast but it doesn't. And it's the only downtown beach.

not really. as i stated in my post above, the currents along the lakeshore in chicago tend to erode sand away. we only have sand beaches where special structures have been built out into the lake to capture and retain the sand.

there is a plan to build such structures/lakefill to expand oak street, but there's currently no money.

And there's a beach by the planetarium, though it's rather small.

yeah that's 12th street beach, but it's so far removed from "downtown" that i hesitate to call it a "downtown beach".

Oh yes, how could I forget that sliver of ohio.

The corner beach is awkward and I wish there was more, that's is all.

Thank God. Also why I shouldn't read these while I'm on vacation drinking this early.

The beaches in Chicago are amazing -- to have a beach like Oak St right in downtown.

I don't think Chicago will ever have a Miami Beach like setting with miles upon miles of unbroken sandy beaches, it just won't.
