See Texas' boldest construction projects in our inaugural Super Structures publication
Dec 12, 2014, 2:35pm CST

Heather Ladage, Tracy Merzi, John Beddow and Jimmy Holmes, Publishers of the Texas Business Journals

Texas is growing — more business, more people, more opportunity — and that means a lot more construction.

There's so much commercial construction, in fact, it's hard to keep track of, which is why the Texas Business Journals came together to create this inaugural edition of Super Structures. Profiled in this special subscriber content publication are the biggest or most significant construction projects underway in each of Texas' largest cities.

We included everything from office towers rising in our downtowns to master-planned communities pushing the borders of our regions.

We're considered conservative (often to a fault) but pictures I have seen of Houston dynamize me.
I'd love to see it! (Dallas, too, in all honesty);)

If not for the staggering expense of both the "repair" and "replace" options - from $250 million up to $1.2 billion - the choice would be simple: Few, if any, council members question that the city's criminal justice facilities are fading.

The current complex, on 18 acres just northwest of downtown, houses 1,000 Houston Police Department staff, the main municipal courthouse, a city jail and numerous other operations spread among a dozen buildings, most of them built between 1950 and 1980.

A vacant 14 acres along Memorial Drive - a rare sight in this affluent west Houston neighborhood - have been sold to a developer who plans to fill the property with million-dollar homes, luxury apartments and commercial space.

Midway is best known for CityCentre, the high-end shopping, residential and hotel complex near the intersection of Interstate 10 and Beltway 8.

The company's new project is about a mile away from CityCentre. While it will have a similar urban-style design, the developer says it will have a more intimate feel.

"It's more of a village scale," said Shon Link, executive vice president of development for Houston-based Midway, which recently purchased the land from Houston Methodist. "I think the personality is different."

The project, to be called Memorial Green, will complement the neighborhood, the company said.

"It's not going to be impactful in a negative way," Link said. "We're adding to the neighborhood."

The project is expected to break ground in January and be completed in summer 2016.

Those of us who remember the early days of HSPVA know that the trombonists practiced in the bathrooms, not the hallways.

Architects give building a playful design

"...HSPVA principal Scott Allen said the building has been designed to provide students with more places to informally perform.

"They won't be practicing and rehearsing in the hallways anymore," Allen said...."

I'm not sure there is a public school where students who play instruments DON'T practice in the bathroom. That's what we did at my high school. Terrible acoustics though, play the right note and make the toilet seats vibrate harmonically :D

As for the dome, as cool as that zip line thing sounds it seems like a gimmick and they are really scraping the bottom of the barrel for reuse ideas.

KP Plaza: New Info

http://www.credgroup.com/content/hotel.html

Quote:

The hotel in KP Plaza will be a high end, full service hotel. Major brand names are available to choose from.

The market feasibility study revealed that the market is demanding a high end hotel with 250 rooms along with the proportional space for amenities.

The hotel will be managed by professional management company to offer the best possible luxury accommodation for business travelers as well as leisure customers.

Once the hotel is in operation, it will have huge impact to local economy. It will not only create a great number of job opportunities, but also high end consumers to the restaurants and other retailers in the KP Plaza.
Office/Condo

http://www.credgroup.com/content/office.html

http://www.credgroup.com/content/condo.html

Quote:

High rise residential condominium is the complementary component in KP Plaza development. It will offer monthly rent to needed parties, a unique niche market in WestChase business district. The Condominium is also an upscale development that will share the amenities in the hotel.

The 120 unit condominium will be sold to public at certain time at market price. The convenience, the easy lifestyle, and the luxury feeling of living environment will certainly attract both X generation as well as some empty nesters.

The site is reserved for an A class office building of 200,000 SF. There are more than 500 parking spaces will be assigned to office building tenant in nearby garage.

The office building will not be a speculative one.

We are open to talk to potential tenant, office broker and investment fund to build a specific office building according to their needs. We are also open to office building owner who want to use the building as their office, or office building owner who want to expand their building portfolios. At last, if someone insists on using the site to design and later build their own building, the option will be considered as well.
