We tend to forget the impact that 656' has given the surroundings, but in many cities, that is a new tallest. If you place 656' out in a field, you'd be like damn... its big.

Now, the only in NY thing could also be said for the fact that 800' towers go unnoticed. That itself is scary, yet a testament to the boom and the magnitude of its skyscraper collection, spanning 3 centuries!

Whats exiting is we are on our way to being the global city with the most super talls. Where not there yet, but catching up. If all goes well, the #1 spot is in reach. 2# is not acceptable!

Very well said. For some reason this made me think of the STL Arch... Anyone who has visited STL knows how dominating it appears, despite how short it really is (630')

Anyway, assuming the rough estimate of ~650' remaining on this tower is correct, there are only 26 cities in the US with buildings taller than what remains to be built on CPT. Like you said, its easy to get spoiled in NYC, but if thats not impressive idk what is.

Nordstrom’s men’s store is opening Thursday with alcoholic drinks and digital style boards

April 9, 2018

Fashion-forward and a little futuristic is the tone Nordstrom has set for its New York City Men’s Store, which opens on to the public on Thursday. The 47,000 square-foot, three-level space will be the companion to the company’s main NYC store, expected to open in 2019 in the supertall Central Park Tower, currently under construction across the street.

Nordstrom had spent 30 years looking for an appropriate retail space in NYC, according to Dawn Clark, the company’s SVP of Store Design, Architecture and Construction. She explained that a stand-alone men’s site allowed the company to deliver the Nordstrom experience found in other U.S. cities.

“Even though we have 363,000 square feet over [at Central Park Tower], it was still tight,” Clark explained. “The hardest thing in Manhattan is to get the right scale of space for our total offering. ... We want to have everything here.”

The new, 47,000-square-foot store at 235 W. 57th St. — across the street from what will be a much-bigger Nordstrom department store that’s slated to open next year — will offer 24-hour, curbside pickup for online orders.

Quote:

Yes — that means you can pick up your Gucci loafers at 2 a.m. on your way to the nightclub, assisted by an after-hours skeleton crew who will meet you at the entrance, Nordstrom officials confirmed at a Monday media tour of the three-story shop.

Nordstrom’s vast shoe department on the lower level — half of which is designer sneakers — offers shoe shines for $2.50 and “sneaker cleanings” for $4.50.

Hitting the right note in the Big Apple, where Nordstrom operates two Nordstrom Rack stores, is key as New York represents its biggest online market, representing about 10 percent of its digital sales.

Despite sluggish shopping trends, the family-run company is slated to open its 328,000-square-foot, seven-story women’s store across the street next year, anchoring a new skyscraper.

Wasn't it also the first 600'+ tower to be built further west than 1 Astor/1515 Broadway? It certainly marks where Hell's Kitchen is.

But apropos here, It's beginning to dawn on me how wide I thought this tower *wasn't* going to be.

I just meant height wise for a building in NYC. It has always been a favorite of mine as well. I wish more modern buildings went for this style.

Back to CPT. I know it has gotten some hate for massing and the loss of the spire, but I think it is going to surprise us. I think it will look much better than 432. Time will tell though. 111 is going to be the real star of midtown.

Nordstrom just opened a store only for men. Here's what it looks like inside

Lauren Thomas

Quote:

Nordstrom just opened its first department store dedicated to men. For the naysayers who doubt there's a need for such a thing today, consider this: Do men really need sneaker shining, personal stylists or the ability to pick up online orders at any hour of the day — even 2 a.m.? Nordstrom thinks so. And all those services and more will be available at the new store.

Located in the heart of New York, in between Times Square and Central Park, the stand-alone men's store is situated across the street from what will eventually be Nordstrom's first full-line store for women in the city. That's set to open next year.

The 47,000 square-foot, three-level men's store has four pint-sized shops inside dedicated to sought-after brands: Calvin Klein, Balenciaga, Valentino and Dior. It's the first time Nordstrom has tried something more upscale like this for men.

Hey, fella! Still wishing you’d snatched up that Balenciaga blazer for the 9 a.m. sales meeting?

Throw a trench coat over your pajamas and it’s yours! A Nordstrom salesperson will hand over the goods — no matter that it’s 3 a.m.

.....The men’s store reflects the elevated service that will only intensify come fall when Nordstrom bows its 320,000-square-foot, full-line department store, a New York City first, across the street from the men’s store, “unleashing experiences and services” not seen before at retail, he said, ticking off the men’s store’s signature features.

Getting closer to overtaking One57. I can remember when Cityspire was the tallest residential tower, but this one will nearly double it in height.

New parking spaces haven't been allowed as-of-right in Manhattan since the 1970's, but it's possible the developers could get a waiver if they can prove the parking will be for residents only.

One57, the first Billionaires Row supertall, has no parking. 432 Park has a few spaces. So short answer is maybe, and just a few spaces. I'm sure the zoning docs would reveal if there's parking.

Edit: One57 actually does have parking. I just checked the 58th street side, and there is a garage.

Seriously? You can't build luxury towers with underground garages without a waiver?

Most residentials in NY don't get parking. Most places in Manhattan don't have parking.

chris08876 Apr 17, 2018 12:25 AM

Its a luxury to have parking within newer towers (especially in Manhattan) along with being somewhat not as common or even rare to see, and... you'll pay a ton too for a permanent parking spot designated for "X" purchaser. People buy parking spots, sometimes, it can go for well over 100k.

NY doesn’t need parking because wealthy New Yorkers don’t drive. They have drivers with Escalades who stay in the vicinity and are avaible on demand.

NY doesn't need parking because most places in the City don't have parking, and it's a transit rich city. It's always been that way. And we're better for it. I don't like those towers with the hideous parking bases. Imagine if this tower had to have it. It's awkward enough with the Nordstroms.

Re the parking points above, I agree that the demand for parking is minimal. I would still expect it (underground) in some of the city's most expensive buildings. Even if only to store a private car for weekend trips to the Hamptons that the chauffeur drives. Sometimes the helicopter goes on the fritz...in all seriousness, it's a little surprising to me. Some buildings do take other approaches. Like the Selldorf building with its "sky garage". https://ny.curbed.com/2010/10/28/104...rage-penthouse

Not relevant. I'm talking about underground parking. Not above-ground parking.

Maybe not relevant as it relates to the base, but still relevant otherwise. Parking is parking.

This is dated, but if you wanna get more into parking and pricing, here's an article. I don't want to bog this thread down in it.

Correct. The vast majority of Manhattan luxury buildings have no parking.

Even many superluxury projects have no parking. I'm pretty sure 520 Park Ave., one of the most expensive residential buildings ever built, with a $130 million penthouse, has no parking.

NYC is just different. Rich people use cars, of course, but they're rarely driving themselves in Manhattan.

The thing is, it doesn't matter. If you're a wealthy Manhattanite, and have a car, it doesn't matter where it's parked, as long as it's secure and protected from elements.

Most garages don't allow driver access, and you would just have the car delivered to your building anyways. Even if the garage is physically in your building, you probably can't go into the garage yourself. So, in your example, the household would keep a car for the Hamptons, but in a neighborhood garage, and it would be delivered to the building entrance when needed.

mrnyc Apr 17, 2018 3:35 PM

yeah parking in the building, even for the rich, is rare in manhattan.

here is a rather well known & newish, but again rare, example --

That's true, but people living in these buildings don't take the subway. They're driven in Escalades and S-Class Sedans, though moreso the former since the ride is much better on our pothole-filled streets.
