Is this a significant setback for them?

The building itself is as of right, and requires no special approvals. |

Yeah, basically every project goes through this. This site in particular is a little more challenging because of the landmark status, on both sides of the excavation. They'll get it right, the DOB will see to it.

What does as of right mean? Tell me as much evidently as you or anyone else can? |

What is allowed to be built is dictated by the zoning of a particular lot (zoning sometimes differs from lot to lot even if side by side). If you want to build something on your lot that it is not already zoned for, then you will need a special permit, and that goes before the City for a public review process (ULURP). Construction permits are filed with the department of buildings (DOB) and are a formality, but must be done before permits are granted. Think of it as taking an exam until you pass. http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/Jo...ssdocnumber=01 Quote:

I'm sure that Goooooogle is good for news (i.e. old news), but for accurate news, tune in here. :)
There are certain individuals who deserve a special badge of trust due to their accuracy. Fortunately, one of those individuals just happens to be a moderator (NYguy). ;) I know that when I read a valid post here, it is valid. As soon as construction begins on this exciting tower, this particular project will most likely become one of the most popular threads here on SSP. |

I am not sure if this has been mentioned already or not but if built this skyscraper will be the third time the tallest building (by roof height) in the United States will be named after a retailer; Woolworth Building, Sears Tower and now Nordstrom Tower. The difference here is that from what I have read this will not be a corporate headquarters it will just have an anchor store and residences above, it shows how naming rights are different today than in generations past.
|
I think it's early to speculate what the tower will be officially branded as. I would be surprised if they named it Nordstrom anything - although it may colloquially develop that title due to the store.

I would be shocked if this tower were named Nordstrom tower.
I mean, Nordstrom is a nice retailer and all, but that would be a horrible name for selling top-of-the-world super luxury condos. Even if Bergdorfs or Barneys anchored this building, no way they would use one of those names. It will probably have some name, like most residentials, or will simply use the street address. In any case, expect this building to break sales price records. |
I doubt it would be the Nordstrom tower, even though Nordstrom owns their portion of the building. We'll see though.
