No contest, I would use it every time. I would far rather take the train downtown, even if I then have to catch a cab for the final bit once I'm there, just to avoid traffic as much as possible. I can see this being very popular with business people who will be expensing it anyway.

I... I... :haha: :haha: :haha:

What?

http://i58.tinypic.com/r1kfhi.jpg

ONE day? :haha: Jesus.

And this airline charges THOUSANDS just to fly about the island. I'd have to mortgage my house to fly them to HFX I'm sure.

FrAnKs Dec 14, 2014 3:46 AM

Seriously ? WOW what a deal.

They just try to keep you ON the island lol

Nouvellecosse Dec 14, 2014 3:50 AM

What's so special about the 4th? It is a NFLD tradition to come to the "mainland" on the 4th of Jan or something? And why have I never heard of "Provincial Airlines"?

SignalHillHiker Dec 14, 2014 3:53 AM

I don't understand how PAL stays in operation. They fly between all of the various airports in NL. Despite the small population, we have quite a few just because of the distance between towns.

So you want to fly from Stephenville to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, it's probably going to be PAL.

And it's going to cost you a fortune. I've no idea who uses them.

They probably have to send a plane to Halifax for repairs and want to recoup some of the cost? I've no idea what's going on with their one-day GREAT flight. :haha:

And it's not like it's a service that doesn't exist. Porter does us to HFX every other day, I think.

Their flight attendants are all George Street Queens.

^^^ Provincial Airlines in Newfoundland & Labrador seems very similar to WestWind Aviation in Saskatchewan, with similar fleet of aircraft and linking Northern communities with Southern cities.

Provincial Airlines in alliance with Innu Mikun Airlines in Labrador and WestWind Aviation with Pronto Airways between Saskatoon and Northern Sask. & Nunvut and Expressair between Regina and Saskatoon

The only differences I can maybe see would be slightly less expensive flying in Saskatchewan than compared to out East and that Expressair has fast 30 minute checkin through its own hangar separate from the main passenger terminal buildings in Regina and Saskatoon. I guess it has to operate more competitively considering its only a couple hours drive between the two cities.

Yeah - Manitoba has the same too. They have Perimeter Airlines. My parents taught on a reserve there for a few years after they retired (only planned to stay 6 months, I think they did three years total). So I flew up there... three or four times, maybe.

They use a separate little terminal at Winnipeg's airport, small planes. You have to wear ear plugs. :D And they land on gravel runways in various reserves. Coolest flights ever in terms of sharp turns, approaching the runway with the plane leaning heavily to one side, etc., big swoops at steep angles, the works. And the pilots are generally VERY young and handsome. :D

Their flights are always busy - and not just between Winnipeg and the reserves. It was cheaper, for example, for my parents to fly to Thompson to go grocery shopping than to shop at the reserve they were on, so they did that. And, during the summer months, it's the only way to get in/out of some of the reserves (in the winter they have frozen roads across the marshes/lakes).

And look at this way... if you're going to be spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on a flight, you can afford a UPX ticket.

What I really want, is for Metrolinx to sign a deal with VIA letting people book UPX tickets through the VIA booking engine for connections. I should be able to go to the VIA Rail website, ask for a booking from Kingston to Pearson Airport, and it will buy me my VIA ticket to Kingston and my UPX ticket from Union to Pearson, all in one transaction. That's one of the main benefits of UPX, is it provides better access to the airport for all of us in the smaller cities of Ontario who rely on trains, buses, and cars to get us to Pearson. VIA already has an agreement with Metrolinx for this to be done with GO trains, so I'm optimistic it will be extended to UPX.

Yes, a VIA rail codeshare would be good.

Flying culverts!

I have flown on Perimeter on numerous occasions. Usually pretty non-eventful, but trying to land in whiteout conditions is a bit hairy.

The best regional airline in MB is Calm Air, hands down. Although they only serve larger communities.

$27 is a steal for a direct reliable trip to the airport.

You guys are living in bubble if you think that price is reasonable for regular Torontonians. This is supposed to be for everyone, not just people in our tax bracket and above.

It's not just uber rich that are out of touch with regular people, single young professionals seem completely blind to how most people live. $27 might be fine for you and I, but I guarantee you that for most people it's not affordable. You realize that for the average person in this city going to a museum, zoo, aquarium, sports event, or the Ex is a luxury they can only do once in a while? I bet you don't think twice about it.

And btw, $27 from Heathrow to Oslo is a steal not from Pearson to Union. My roomate in London paid less than that (£14 to be precise) a decade ago. I bet you can still do it for around $30 today.

The_Architect Dec 18, 2014 3:44 PM

^ The cheapest Heathrow Express ticket is 21 pounds, or $38.

Flown Calm Air quite a bit in the Western Hudson Bay region (Kivalik). Loved using them. They were more likely to land in Rankin more times than first Air or Canadian North.

I am in Toronto for business regularly, however I am not able to expense my travel, so the UP Express fares will be coming out of my own pocket, and I am not a rich person. The UP Express fares are expensive compared to other airport rail services such as in Vancouver. I will have to investigate to see if a Presto card is something I can use even though I am not a local.

But this is an express service, the TTC method will still be there for those who are either a) not traveling to downtown or b) find the round trip price prohibitively expensive. Lets face it most people taking this train downtown either live or work downtown and are likely not financially constrained enough to find $27 to be too expensive.

How cheap do you think this should be anyway? $15 is likely still too expensive for those people you are describing so exactly what kind of operating subsidy do you think would be appropriate here? Personally I've been taking the TTC to the airport for years and it's not too bad. I'll be taking the Airport express now but it's not like the TTC is some big trial to take, it takes the same time as a cab in rush hour.

Comparing Union Express to Vancouver's Skytrain is not really valid as they are completely different services. Union Express is just that - an express service that offers airport to DT transportation with minimal stops in between (two). Skytrain is a transit service and I count 11 stops between the airport and Waterfront station.

When I first saw this thread I thought $27 was pretty steep. But this isn't supposed to be transit, it's a freaking express train. Nobody will be forced to take it, you can still ride the bus for $3 if you want, or take a cab, or drive yourself, or bum a ride.

Anyone in Canada* can get a Presto card for a $6 fee from www.prestocard.ca. You save $8 per UPX trip with a card, so it's worth it even if you're only going to use it once.

*only exception is that residents of Quebec, if they get Presto cards, cannot use them in Ottawa.

I can't wait for this train to be up and running. Really it's much cheaper then I was expecting. Most were guessing it would be around $40 per trip. I just booked an airport limo for next TYuesday to pick me up from downtown. The cost will be after taxes $62.15 then factor in about a $10 tip. Again, I'm very impressed with the $27 fare.

Does anybody know if there is an airport shuttle from the core. It seems like all the charters I've checked shut down their routes in October and November this year.

I may just suck it up and leave a little earlier and take the TTC for $3.00.

Innsertnamehere Dec 18, 2014 8:01 PM

The effective fare is $19 as well remember. Essentially everyone who lives in Toronto and uses transit even occasionally will have a PRESTO card within the next 2 years.
