No and yes. They would not operate the flight. They are applying for permission to put their code on a flight operated by another airline.

My guess is WestJet would sign an agreement to codeshare on an existing JAL flight and Korean Air flight. They would also need to ask for permission like this if they were to do the same on a Delta flight from the US to Japan and Korea.

WestJet has no standing with government of Japan and South Korean. It is basically asking the Canadian government to name them as an airline under the treaty between Canada and Japan and the treaty between South Korea and Canada. The Canadian diplomats then need to talk to their counterparts in the other country to make the change. Happens even if just a codeshare on an existing flight.

Korean Air is a natural codeshare, since it's Skyteam. Japan doesn't have a Sky Team airline, and WS certainly will not codeshare with ANA since it's *Alliance and a main AC partner. So ya, JAL makes sense. It also has a surprsingly large # of codeshare agreements with non-OneWorld partners.

Great news about Fiji Airways, non-stop with a widebody is a whole different ballgame than what was offered via HNL. It will also provide one of the shortest routes between the UK and Fiji. According to GC Map, the only route shorter appears to be NRT. Fiji did used to be a British colony, not sure how much travel that produces nowadays, but for one of the most geographically isolated places, it can't hurt to offer that connection. So YVR will have non-stops to Bangkok, Manila, Singapore, Brisbane, Sydney, Auckland, and now Nadi this winter. Add in four Hawaiian destinations (if it weren't a US state it would be South Pacific lol), and lots of South Pacific/SE Asian destinations.

Sunwing's pilots are launching a Canada Labour Relations complaint stipulating the employer negotiated in bad faith prior to the pilots ratifying their last contract. They're alleging the company lied to the pilots about the pending takeover of the airline by WestJet and they have the evidence to prove it.

Yes, as WestJet has been interested in operating International to Japan & South Korea, Asia since pre pandemic years & according to CBC news article WestJet did sign a codeshare interline agreement since December 2011 with Japan Airlines.

(Travellers will be able to link from Japan Airlines flights landing in Vancouver, which will then connect to WestJet flights destined for Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, B.C., Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg)

Plus WestJet has the 787’s to operate it, at some point too.

But yes codeshare is a good start for it.

Hope they succeed with WG about to be gobbled up. Also hope they don’t put all their eggs in the YYZ and YUL baskets.

It looks like WestJet Summer seasonal flights from Calgary YYC to Quebec City YQB is ending /cut from its schedule moving forward as July 5 2022 & its available through a connection in Toronto YYZ on WS Encore.

Only Air Canada Rouge YYC - YQB Summer 2022 seasonal flights is still operating a few times weekly.

Not too surprised that YYC - YQB cut for WestJet, as couple weeks ago WS CEO has said their plans to shift focus to Western Canada & changes for Eastern Canada. https://calgaryherald.com/business/w...an-for-airline

Quebec City's airport released its 2022 stats so far this year ... but without the number of passengers.

February 618,8 %
March 1254,9 %
April 1305,9 %
May 1265,5 %

It’s so annoying that YQB only posts percentages. It’s almost as bad as YHZ.

As noted in that article you listed, it talks about reducing regional eastern routes.
Quote:

This will mean pulling back on some regional routes in Eastern Canada.
It says absolutely nothing about transcon routes, in fact it mentions they plan to increase west-to-east routes:

Quote:

WestJet will also increase non-stop flights from west to east using 737s.
This cut, particularly with how short notice it was done is more likely due to operational challenges and probably not being to compete with Rouge on the route.

I just got affected by the Swoop summer cuts.

BOTH legs of my flights were cancelled in August but I was rebooked on different days... that aren't ideal.

YHM-YHZ, YHM-YWG are now mostly sold out for July (probably through consolidations) while they consolidated the shit out of YHM-YEG in August.

Lets see how long it takes for Swoop customer support to get back to me :(

Canada Jetlines has successfully operated its Transport Canada certification demonstration flights between Waterloo and Moncton, and is set to begin selling tickets "imminently." The flight history is available on FlightAware as CJL01 and CJL02.

Quote:

[Canada Jetlines] the new all-Canadian, leisure airline, is proud to announce successful completion of all demonstration flights for Transport Canada in the process to obtain its Air Operator Certificate (AOC). On July 5, 2022, Canada Jetlines operated a flight from the Region of Waterloo International airport to Greater Moncton Roméo Leblanc International airport and back, to the satisfaction of Transport Canada inspectors.

“We are extremely proud of our operations team for successfully completing this comprehensive program with Transport Canada. There are only a few administrative items for Transport Canada to complete before issuing the AOC, which is expected to be completed within the next two weeks,” shared Eddy Doyle, CEO of Canada Jetlines. “As a start-up during the pandemic, we emphasize preparation and collaboration. We are currently staffed and equipped to accommodate and welcome guests to travel with Canada Jetlines.”

With the aim to begin airline operations in the next few weeks, Jetlines intends to begin ticket sales imminently. Please visit www.jetlines.com to learn more, sign up for email updates, and follow on all social media platforms to join the Canada Jetlines family.

That's an unusual city pair for a first route. Or is that just a one-time demonstration?

How come ULCCs stay out of Quebec? Montreal is lightly served and Quebec is not served at all so far as I can tell. These seem like places that would appeal to ULCC passengers.

Because Montreal YUL & province of Quebec is a Air Canada /Air Transat Stonghold year round!

It's tough for ULCC to make it work with the exception of Flair Airlines so far in Quebec.

It’s route proving and makes sense given Jetlines had the 320 delivered to YKF and YQM/Moncton is Transport Canada’s regional HQ for Atlantic Canada. It may mean nothing or it may mean it’s a preview of things to come (continue reading to see what I mean). However, the iteration of Jetlines that is actually going to get off the ground have stipulated their main business model will focus on southern leisure flying to the typical sunspots. They’re vying to be Sunwing and not Flair or Lynx (or WS’ flanker brand). Now having said that, there’s a bit of a leak on the Jetlines website. On the Destinations drop-down listed Moncton, Toronto, Winnipeg and Niagara Falls (one would assume they’re talking about YHM and not St. Catharines’ tiny little airport or BUF.

Interesting news about Canada Jetlines.

This will make the eighth airline serving Moncton - Romeo LeBlanc (CYQM)

This includes Air Canada, WestJet, Swoop, Porter, PAL, Air Transit, Sunwing and now Canada Jetlines.

I did more digging and the initial schedule appears to be YWG-YYZ-YQM ops X67.

It looks like Flair Airlines is cutting the Calgary YYC /Edmonton YEG - Comox YQQ few times weekly flights as of July 16 2022.

Both routes started end of March 2022 for them.
