But way ahead of Taiwan which has used travel restrictions.

Just give it another 5 days or so. I'll come back to this post on Mar 20th.

By the way, we have relatively few population than other countries in the world. Do you think we should've done better than placing at the 20th?

I'm just saying at this point, Canada is still have a chance of not going into lockdown mode. Those countries with thousands of cases are already long past that point....

WS updated its schedule today, and its long-haul schedule remains unchanged.

Tonight, they will fly 3 787s to Europe. YYC/YYZ-LGW and YYC-CDG. Outbound CDG appears to have less than 100 people on it, but inbound tomorrow is basically 100% full.

I have not heard anything new in regards to routes from Air Canada today, but Westjet will be slashing its international capacity by 60% and it domestic flights by 40% in the coming weeks.

WestJet set to slash international, domestic flights amid coronavirus outbreak

Quote:

Calgary-based WestJet has halted capital projects and asked vendors for price cuts, but did not say how many layoffs are in store for the company’s 12,000 flight attendants, pilots and others employees...

...“Unfortunately, we … have no alternative but to reduce the number of employees. Our first and most preferred option is to ask WestJetters to consider voluntary leaves, unpaid vacation, reduced work time among other voluntary measures.”
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/busi...d-coronavirus/

YYC and YYZ will be hit the hardest by the Westjet cuts, I think YUL this least - out of our 'major' airports.

I think Canada’s response both federally and provincially thus far has been very good. If you measure on a per 1M population basis, we’re not even in the top 30 globally. Also, we’re one of only a few countries in the world with > 200 cases, but < 2 deaths.

I have nothing good to say about the Federal response. Provinces are handling it quite well.

Exactly. It's been mostly the provinces that have taken action, and rightfully so.

From Ottawa, it's been nothing but airy-fairy 'we recommend', 'you should or shouldn't nonchalant, laissez-faire 'directives'. No travel bans, no mandated quarantining, nothing. It's like they are afraid to take charge. Justin is too worried about offending other people and leaders from other countries rather than protecting the citizens he was elected to govern. Not to mention his own wife getting the bloody virus, and it's STILL not enough of a wake-up call for that dolt. I was always 50/50 when it came to pretty boy JT, but now after his lackluster responses to this pandemic; fuck him. Fuck him to the moon. Useless piece of shit.

I think they have done a good job.

First off, JT should not be fronting any of this and his is not. The system is the US is based on the President signing directives. That is not the Canadian system of government. For example, the authority to close or restrict air travel or sea travel rests with the Minister of Transport, not the PM. Virtually every act of parliament places authority in the hands of the relevant minister.

The ministers for health and global affairs have been front and center.

The federal government is responsible for establishing testing protocols, putting together kits and then validating the provincial labs. The national lab in Winnipeg has done that far more effectively in Canada than the CDC in the US. The fact that as of a week ago both BC and Ontario each have done more tests than the US says a lot.

The feds have organised a number of air charters out of hot spots and off cruise ships. Those people have been transported, quarantined and processed far more effectively than the US has done with their people.

The feds have closed Canadian ports to cruise ships until July 1st. The US has not.

The feds have been far more strategic and targeted on how they have handled air travel. I flew back from the US about three weeks ago, at the customs kiosk in Vancouver it asked me if I had been in China on my trip. News reports coming out about US airports are that even today there are people who are not even being asked while others are waiting for hours in lines to be processed.

.

You seriously think that the Minister of Transport would make a decision on this without the PM being consulted and in agreement?

osirisboy Mar 16, 2020 1:34 AM

The Feds in Canada have done a great job! They have done what the medical experts have recommended. And if you try to impose too harsh of orders with no clear way to enforce it then you end up getting people who will lie and not follow quarantines etc.

Versus the us. Obviously the trump admin is a gong show and are useless

Couldn't agree more. Alberta has just closed all its schools. Mr. Socks still can't figure out which airport to whittle the traffic down to but don't worry nothing is off the table. When WS and AC cut 100% of their transborder and international travel Trudeau will introduce a travel ban on transborder and international travel. Slow clap.

Through this article again https://www.theglobeandmail.com/busi...d-coronavirus/ it says that Swoop and Sunwing are promoting international travel while the Canadian government is telling people not to travel. Thanks WestJet and Sunwing for moronic capitalism and thanks Canadian government for not imposing a travel ban to keep WestJet and Sunwing at bay.

In individual or urgent cases yes to both questions. That is how our system of government works. On Sept 11 the decision to close Canadian Airspace was made by the Minster of Transport. Same thing with the decision to ground the MAX.

Given adequate time the minister would likely take this to cabinet and consult Cabinet and the PM before making a decision. I suspect the recent announcement probably reflect consensus among a number of related ministers and the PM.

I'm certain the PM can have influence on the decisions being made by the ministers. And besides, the decisions that SHOULD have been made weeks ago are common-sense based, but clearly common-sense is somerhing JT and his cabinet clearly lack.

But never fear, we can all thank JT et al when potentially hundreds more cases walk right into the country undetected because the Minister of Transport felt the need to do nothing for the longest time, putting us all at even greater risk.

Three weeks ago I had a quick business trip into the US. On return to Vancouver, the kiosk in customs ask me if I had been in China or not. Fairly certain if I answered yes, the inspection from the customs office would have been very different.

Going back a few weeks there are reports of people who were on certain cruise ships having customs officers waiting on the jet bridge to talk to them before the doors to the aircraft are even open.

I think it is stretch to say the government has done nothing.

But people have anecdotal stories about people's arrival at the airport that have even been reported in the media! It must mean that there is complete incompetence at the centre. No other explanation is possible. In any event, it's reassuring to know that several provinces have the surplus resources to be able to go to the airport to do what the CBSA is going to be doing tomorrow anyway. If passengers get screened twice, the anecdotes will be much happier, no?

No one said it had done nothing... but just not nearly enough.

Three weeks ago, the question should've been if you had been to China, South Korea, Iran, Italy, or on board Diamond Princess or not.
