Aon Center's new owner plans observatory
By Ryan Ori

The new owner of the Aon Center said it plans to add an observatory atop the 83-story office tower, a plan that would make Chicago just the second city in North America—and one of the few anywhere in the world—with three observatories.

^ cool!

it does make sense with the millions of tourists who walk right by their front door going to/from millennium park.

Amanita Nov 11, 2015 9:28 AM

That would be awesome, I'd go for a visit. One more excuse to visit Chicago one of these days :)

DrNest Nov 11, 2015 1:14 PM

Great news. I love this tower, and would relish the opportunity to go up to a viewing area some time.

Pete8680 Nov 15, 2016 4:39 AM

Is the observation deck open?

Aon Center owners float plan for sky-high exterior elevator to new observation deck

The plan, which would be the most visible in a series of changes that seek to upgrade the 45-year-old skyscraper at 200 E. Randolph St., calls for placing the elevator tower outside the Aon Center’s northwest corner. There, the tower and double-deck elevators within would not be visible from Millennium Park or neighboring Maggie Daley Park, though they could be seen from North Michigan Avenue.

Well that would certainly be unique. I'd say it tops the Ledge or Tilt in 'coolness'.

Apparently tonight a plan for a glass elevator and observation deck at Aon Center is going to be revealed at a public meeting.

6:30pm tonight at 200 East Randolph Street

Oh god... please please please just don't be on the Grant Park facing side. That building is monolithic in its size, shape, color, material, and symmetry. A glass elevator on the front facing side would make me cry...

I believe previous reports suggested it would be at the northwest corner of the building.

Aon Center's planned observation deck, Chicago's third, could create competition for tourist dollars
Source: http://www.chicagotribune.com/busine...511-story.html

Quote:

The owners of the Aon Center, Chicago’s third-tallest skyscraper, on Monday unveiled plans for an observatory atop the building, potentially setting up a heated competition for tourist dollars with the established observatories at Willis Tower and 875 N. Michigan Ave., the former John Hancock Center.

...

If built, the as-yet unnamed observatory would make Chicago the only American city with three observation decks besides New York, where visitors take in views from atop One World Trade Center, the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center. The question is whether all three can survive.

“We believe there’s a huge market that can sustain all three,” Steve Sales, principal of the New York-based 601W Cos., the Aon Center’s owner, said in an interview previewing the plans, which include a glass-sheathed elevator tower and a thrill ride that would vault visitors over the building’s edge.

...

The Aon Center’s answer to The Ledge and Tilt would be the Sky Summit, an attraction that would lift cabs full of visitors over the building’s edge for 30 to 40 seconds. Tickets for that experience would cost extra.

...

The Aon Center plans call for some exterior steel columns and the granite cladding above the building’s 82nd floor to be removed to create uninterrupted views from the observatory.

...

The estimated $185 million cost also covers the elevator tower and other planned features, such as an entrance pavilion at the building’s southeast corner and underground passageways leading from the pavilion to the elevator.

Glad they plan on making better use of the southeastern part of the building. There's a bank (or was, it's been a few years) there that had all the ambiance of a tomb.

donnie May 15, 2018 12:44 AM

Unless this ride free falls from top to bottom its a palm to the face! Im more intrigued by the elevator and obs deck .

I hope it looks classy but i will settle for not trashy

Khantilever May 15, 2018 12:47 AM

^ I’m hoping this new attraction gives the final push the empty lot North of Pru2 (former Mandarin Oriental site) needs to finally get a hotel/residential tower.
