Looks nice. It kinda reminds me of the Parkmerced Development in SF. Except this one is actually getting built.

Also fellow UCSD grad! There aren't any current plans for Pepper Canyon East/former Sixth apartments; there's too many other capital projects in the pipeline right now (Eighth College, Pepper Canyon West towers, Hillcrest being rebuilt, Marshall Lowers being replaced, East Campus future development). The apartments there aren't the newest or nicest by any means, but are not at the top of the list for replacement. The Marshall Lowers have big flooding and mold issues, and are lower density, so they're next. After that, the Marshall Uppers might be next, then maybe after that we'll see new towers east of the trolley station. Don't quote me on it though :D

Great locations, esp. the one near Petco and the convention center if they can squeeze it in there. On the other hand, the more easterly site deeper in the East Village has more parking, and an arena there would spur development. There are already a couple of twin 45 story residential towers nearby, and more growth there to infill would be good. The site is still close enough to th Gaslamp to keep foot traffic good, and it wouldn't strain parking as much. It might compete with services for the homeless, which are nearby (St. Vincent Father Joe complex etc) but might open up job opportities for them. Homeless services and an arena can coexist

Seattle and Las Vegas are already next in line for NBA expansion teams, so if San Diego were to get a team it would have to be through relocation, which is extremely unlikely.

It's unfortunate, what Donald Sterling did.

Are those apartments (PCE) still being used?

They're being used for transfer housing. The Village became 7th college, and all the transfers were moved to the former Sixth Apartments. I'm not around UCSD any more but I believe this is still the arrangement.

I believe this is correct. UCSD needs all the housing it can get, so they'll definitely keep them occupied until pretty much the day before demolition is set to begin.

San Diego is biggest. Do all 3 cities at once. Rectify an injustice.

There just isn't a strong use case for an NBA team in San Diego. Seattle is a bigger metro area and doesn't have competition nearby for fandom like San Diego does with the Lakers (huge fanbase) and the Clippers. And as it stands, there's already 4 teams in California as well. Adding a 5th team would be too much. The two that would be most likely to relocate (Kings and Clippers) just moved into, or are building, new arenas.

Adding 3 teams would also not work, because the NBA currently has 30 teams. 3 would make it an odd number, creating an imbalance. There would have to be a 4th expansion team to make it work, and I don't see the NBA adding 4 expansion teams at once. It'd have to be 2 (Seattle and Las Vegas), and then maybe you can start looking at San Diego and another city like Kansas City, but with San Diego, you'd still have the issues listed above.

Technically San Diego is only bigger by city proper. Seattle has a metro population that surpasses San Diego's by almost 1.5 million, so it makes sense they're first in line. Las Vegas can fuck off though, true.

True. Also, one of the key metrics is TV market size, not metro or city size. San Diego is #27. Vegas happens to be #40, but it's Vegas, it belongs to all.

Agreed that an arena in Midway isn't probably the best use of the space. One could easily fit in Tailgate Park and arenas have much more flexibility in their construction than open stadiums, so they can shoehorn in lots of places. I see no reason why they couldn't build something over at-grade rail yards except for cost, which could be a big reason, but it is not really that different from Hudson Yards being built over a sub grade yard.

Only a matter of time before there is a betting scandal in Vegas involving players. Will make Pete Rose look like a saint, and the "Black Sox" look like choirboys.

I hope you gentlemen don't mind if I post some photos I took this week on vacation in San Diego.

Even though they're just snapshots I took with my phone, I was able to get some decent vantages from the 25th floor of the Marriott Marquis.

I noticed several cranes in the sky and projects under construction, but I don't know what is what.

None of the pics are doctored--it was muggy, so the sunset pics had that reddish color to them. It is always a pleasure to return to SD!

Looks awesome! Can't wait to go down there. Don't know how much of the city I'll see because I'm going for a friend's graduation from boot, but I'll see if I can't familiarize myself with some ongoing projects before then.

Great photos! Yeah late July through August is about as muggy as it gets here and the sunsets are beautiful this time of year. Lots of pink in the sky. Heat turns up and dries out in September/October.

Vegas vs. SD for NBA

Reasons SD is the better choice: The TV market is much bigger it will take LV a long time to ever get close. A huge thing no one has ever mentioned: They already have 2 teams that play in the Fall thru Spring NHL and Raiders. San Diego has a massive sports void once the MLB season ends with the Chargers being gone. Too much competition from the other teams for NBA there.

4 teams in CA argument. Vegas is even more of a Laker/Warrior town than San Diego is. While technically just over the state line in Nevada it is a massive California transplant city. San Diego is yearning for its own sports identity since the Chargers left. We desperately want a franchise to call our own. Vegas getting a team is same thing as a 5th team in CA.

It is a shame that the Chula Vista Bayfront is a bit far from all the money in La Jolla North thru Carlsbad because that area is so prime for a billionaire to come in and do a massive project teaming up with the dynamic of the amazing Gaylord Hotel and Convention Center. A mega rich guy could buy the Pelicans or Grizzlies and do an arena and housing at that site and it would be epic right on that nice stretch of bayfront.

I don’t disagree with you on that notion. SD would be a much better location for an NBA team than Vegas since the residents are less transplanty and transient. However the NBA has already pegged Seattle and Vegas to be their next targets for expansion. Seattle obviously has the strongest use case. I’m not sure if SD can do anything in the next 1-2 years that would convince the NBA it’d a better destination for a team than Vegas, but barring that, SD will have to wait until an NBA team relocates or the next round of expansion takes place. And if the NBA does expand in Vegas, that would further weaken SD’s standing as, like you’re alluding to, it would then be a 6th team in the CA sphere of influence.

So if I’m SD, I would be lobbying HARD to Adam Silver right now to convince him to choose SD over Vegas.

I love it when people post new photos on this thread. Good vantage point too. It looks like they were taken this past Monday? That day had some weird weather for San Diego.

Thanks! I figured the hometown forumers might enjoy the vantage. I took a ton of pics Monday through yesterday morning, as a city fanatic would, but I didn't want to post too many redundant views. I think Tuesday was the day I took the sunset pics.
