I'm so tired of hearing about how Exxon made a mistake. Are all of you so naive as to think the company didn't do its research as to where to build a campus? Are all of you so all-knowing that you have inside info that Exxon doesn't? It's a grand delusion if you think so.

Big deal that they moved to The Woodlands area. There are a lot of big companies in The Woodlands including Anadarko, Baker Hughes, Oncology, Woodforest and the soon-to-be headquarters of Southwest Energy.

I'm 27 years old. Frankly, I couldn't give a rats behind of location. I'd go where the money is. Exxon will remain competitive as far as employment opportunities go because they have to be. They know there are too many other places to work in Houston. And frankly, a 20-something year old would be rather foolish not to strongly consider and or accept a first job with such a landmark company---given no other opportunities. Not everybody considers downtown 'the place' to be. Not everybody wants to fight the traffic. Not everybody cremes their shorts when they look at downtown highrises.

Money talks.

skyhouse is 336 units in one 24 story tower.. i dont see this being multiple towers for just ">350 units", unless they meant a couple of towers with ~350 units each..? if its just ">350" total, multiple towers would be pretty short. if it is 2 towers hopefully they are on top of a garage so they will have a little more height, but i would like to see them just go for one taller residential tower that would be visible in the skyline.

I hope they meant that each one is going to be 350 units, I am just saying what they wrote.

Marquette Cos. planning "a couple of highrise's in downtown", totaling more than 350 unit's. The firm will also be selling bit's of land in Galveston to developers.

Managing director Darren Sloniger tells us Downtown feels like Chicago (where he's based) did 20 years ago. (We just wish the city had a winning basketball team like Chicago did 20 years ago.) The City's new retail strategy, focus on parks, and residential incentive all point to a submarket about to take off. He's doing due diligence on a few sites, and tells us he'd like to develop a couple high-rise projects totaling about 350 units Downtown.
http://i.imgur.com/pIiMnHf.jpg

And the firm is gearing up its 1,000-acre Preserve at West Beach project (site plan above). The development's first sale closes in a few weeks, 157 acres to Artist's Boat. The site will be preserved and used to teach kids about nature. Darren tells us the rest of the project will be sold in manageable bites to developers, including two beachfront tracts (one for single family and one for a hotel).

More on the Mid-Main project in Midtown from the Chronicle.

Mid Main project will ride with the millennials
Development seeking the 18-to-32 generation with Midtown rail stop, apartments and retail

By David Kaplan

September 29, 2013

Since the light-rail line opened on Main Street nearly a decade ago, civic leaders have pushed the idea of transit-oriented mixed-use projects - places near rail stops where people can live and play and get to work by foot, rail, bike or car.

That sounds a lot like Mid Main, a development about to get underway west of the Ensemble/Houston Community College rail stop. The project will include apartments, shops, restaurants and a big parking garage.

Going up at the same time next door will be the nonprofit Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston. Construction on both projects starts early next year.

Mid Main did not come easy.

"We bought the property in 2008, two weeks before the economy collapsed," managing partner Bob Schultz said. "We were very worried."

For years, he said, he and his partners clung to their plan while staying in "survival mode." Once the economy rebounded, so did the project planned for the 3500 and 3600 blocks of Main.

Proponents of transit-oriented mixed-use residential developments are enthusiastic. David Crossley, president of Houston Tomorrow, a local quality-of-life advocacy group, called Mid Main "the one we've all been waiting for." He predicted more transit-oriented mixed-use developments will follow.

"Back in the day, they couldn't get anybody to do" such a project in Midtown, Crossley said. "Nobody wanted to be the first, except for Bob."

Southwest to break ground for international expansion at Hobby Airport

A rendering of the overall aerial view of Southwest Airlines' plan for expansion at Hobby Airport.

By Erin Mulvaney

September 30, 2013

Construction begins Monday on the $156 million international terminal at Hobby Airport that Southwest Airlines hopes will add upward of 1.5 million new travelers to the Houston airport each year.

The Hobby expansion, funded primarily by Dallas-based Southwest Airlines, will include a five-gate terminal and expansions of the security screening checkpoint and the Southwest ticket counters.

The city is set to spend $85 million for additional projects.

Airline and city officials, including Mayor Annise Parker, will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on the site Monday morning.

The 280,000-square-foot expansion is scheduled for completion before the end of 2015, with short-hop international flights to cities in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America to begin by 2016. This will increase Hobby's physical footprint by more than 40 percent.

"It's on time. It's on budget. We are pretty happy," Bob Montgomery, Southwest's vice president of airport affairs, said in a recent interview. "The city of Houston estimated lots of jobs and a huge economic benefit to come from this project. That is absolutely on track."

From the buildings graffiti-scarred rooftop, Houston's skyline glistens in the distance. But U.S 59 ribbons through in between. Vacant lots, industrial buildings and overgrown land covers much of the area. Development is scattered, with clusters of townhomes and small business.

Eado, which is short for east of downtown, holds an allure for business partners for several reasons: proximity to downtown, an influx of young people and free street parking. The Dynamo recently began playing home games in the BBVA Compass Stadium.

A momentum could soon be setting in. In addition to office renovation, set to be complete as soon as February, a 315-unit will be build on Texas and Dowling.

"Mill Creek Residential is developing EaDo Station, which developers said it will be the first high-density complex built in the area in a decade. It could be open by the time the light rail extension is completed by August 2014."

"At the same time, East End leaders hope the creation of a tree-lined, park-like pedestrian promenade along six blocks of Bastrop Street will make the area more desirable. They cite Discovery Green Park as a model.

The area now looks mostly industrial, but East End developers hope trees to be planted along the street from Bell to McKinney will make the area more inviting.

Anton Sinkewich, executive director of the East Downtown Managment District, said work could begin this month to remove debris, build paths and plant more than 250 trees on the grassy area.

"That will basically be the first public space established in EaDo District", Sinkewich said. "It's primarily an industrial area rapidly turning over to entertainment and residential."

The promenade plan grew out of a private group's proposal to develop space along Bastrop into a park. The Sister Cities of Houston is working on getting funding to put some of the more ambitious plans into action, Sinkewich said.

"We are starting a little bit more modest and looking to grow this into a signature public space in the neighborhood", he said.

This may be a proposal -- or was a proposal, for the site in DT the city is marketing for residential or mixed-use development.

"World Hall of Sports (WHS) is envisioned as an important infrastructure project in both the recently designated Houston Convention District (HCD) and the Downtown Entertainment District (DED) and possibly also in the Midtown Museum District (MMD). It will be a revitalization, sports, entertainment, cultural and educational development. A new expanded George R. Brown Convention Center plan will double the size and impact of conventions to Houston’s economy. That plan indicates added pedestrian-friendly amenities within walking distance will be needed as part of City proposed $6 billion in new Convention District facilities.

The proposed project would result in the creation of an autonomous City of Houston-led joint adventure that could include Harris County, Houston Independent School District and the Sports Authority. Nonprofits World Hall of Sports and Global Sports Institute Foundation will join for-profits WSCLLC and Global Sports Investment Capital, to develop a full downtown block or blocks."
