Wow. You don't often see 1,500'+ buildings with such brazen lack of architectural thought. China may have several dozen 1,000'+ buildings rising but the overall quality of the architecture is sorely lacking. You would think that flagship buildings deserve stellar designs... if this even gets built, that is.

I think the current design is still better than what was originally proposed- a giant hand.

The glazing looks pretty stellar to me (at least in the SSC renderings), and I don't think the design looks bad. It's not insanely-innovative or anything, but the shape's ok.
As far as China's supertalls go, the ones that have been built recently in GZ, SZ, TJ and SH are all above average to spectacular. Guangzhou's supertall stock is very impressive, and so is Shanghai's. Sorely-lacking is not a phrase that comes to my mind. |

I don't think the design is that bad; the problem, to me, is the setting.
What is the point of a suburban supertall? If you build a giant tower in the middle of a park/campus environment, you lose the whole appeal, at least to my liking. I guess I'm more of an urbanist nerd than a skyscraper nerd, becuase these types of towers do nothing for me. There's no context whatsoever. It could be off a highway exit in Texas, or in Dubai, or on the face of the Moon for that matter. |

^ I have to agree there. So many Chinese supertalls are being built on huge plots where a large plaza (or greenery!) surrounds them. Even in superdense Hong Kong the ICC is far from the urban area.
It's really a pity, because some Chinese towers tend to have a great design. In fact I love the Ping An in Shenzen or the CTF in Guangzhou. |
