No likely, the south terminal does not do security screening.

Unfortunately you can only book the flights with an interline using a travel agent.

Just tried Expedia and yes they show up. You can book Powell River through Vancouver to Toronto as an example using a combination of Pacific Costal and WestJet. Neat.

Oh interesting, I thought that might be an issue for some inbound flights, you can get around that though. I didn't realize there was no security at all over there, thats unfortunate.

Expedia is a travel agency. You can’t book it via either airline website.

I guess it is nice for people to book all the way through, but they would still need to collect their bags I assume? Doesn't seem much different thank the self connection they would have already done.

https://flights.flyflair.com/en-ca/deals?dc=100OFF

Flair is now giving away flights for free, also looked like they had a couple planes parked on runway 26 in YYC, must be a pretty tough fall for them.

That's sometimes the case with interlines.

Ex. Air Canada intelines with over 100 airlines, and some of those connections are hard to book on aircanada.com

Exactly....

No, you check-in once, get 2 (or more) boarding passes and usually bags are checked for all legs.

The WS press release says as much. Optimizes connection times.

There's a terminal change, so you'll have to collect bag and take the shuttle bus from south to main terminal.

All Pacific Coastal flights are using south terminal. Only those that are running for WS are using the main terminal.

Well, the fare for some flights were already as low as $0.26 to begin with, so they might as well make it free.

They're getting most of their revenue from additional charges such as carry-on, checked baggage, seat selection, etc, and those could be $50-$100 per seat even if they gave away the ticket for free.

Maybe only at YVR, but everywhere else, bags should be checked through to the final destination.

Guests will enjoy the confidence of optimized connecting times and the convenience of checking in and receiving boarding passes for all flights at the first point of departure.
Wouldn't be surprised if they sort that issue out at YVR as well. Plenty of other airports where interline partners are at different terminals, and yet the bags are checked through.

Well, I have no idea as I never did that kind of connection at YVR before, but the two terminals at YVR are quite far away though, so the connection is not that trivial (ie. shuttle only runs every 30min throughout the day and it takes 15min to go from one terminal to the other).

Maybe the bag will checked through, but I'd imagine the connection might be tight even if it's 1.5-2 hours.

I don't know either how baggage is handled.

On Expedia I tried search for YBL to YYZ. The two options are Central Mountain airline interlined with Air Canada. Pacific Costal interlined with WestJet. All with 3+ hour connection times.

That clearly provides competition on the routes. What does not show up are these options on something like YYJ-YYZ.

Im sure they have something in mind, but the fact there is no security on the pasco side is a bit different. They would need to haul them into the terminal for screening, wont make it easy to reduce that 3 hr connection time.

Is CMA out of the south terminal now also? I haven't seen them over at the main terminal in a long time.

nname Oct 21, 2022 9:25 PM

Totally forgot that AC codeshare with CMA. And yes, CMA have moved to south terminal for a few years now.

According to AC, need to re-check baggage:

https://www.routesonline.com/news/29...terrace-route/

"After making a run at Air Canada in the east, Satusky said WestJet elected to downsize its high cost and operationally plagued former hub at Toronto Pearson (YYZ) and “own the west”—returning to its Western Canadian roots and routes. This means eschewing unprofitable flying in the eastern provinces, and refocusing on its home and most profitable hub, Calgary, along with Edmonton and Vancouver strongholds."

So it seems like a lot of eastern flying out of YYZ was loss making then? And that they're seeing success at YYC.

what my friends who work in YWG were told that WestJet was bleeding money badly before covid and then covid hit and it got even worst.
They xld their remaining wide body orders and apparently once their lease is up on the current 787 they are suppose to disappear as well.
They are pulling out of the east because they aren’t making a real profit and AC is “too strong” so yes what their CEO said they are making the West their home and going back to their old root which is to benefit YYC YVR YEG YWG
My friends also told that a lot of Westjet pilots hate how the company has changed from what it was to now, they really despise flying into the cities that WestJet let go all their former employees and did outsourcing third parties to do the check in etc.
The partner airlines of WestJet like Delta still are begging WestJet to invest in their baggage tracking like able to track bag tags and know where they are. Because if you lose your bag on WestJet they honestly have no idea where or when it’s coming. At least AC DL AA have a “last known scan” thing
Yes I know a lot of airlines struggle with the baggage stuff
WestJet is trying to rebuild itself quietly but in a positive way.
If WestJet is successful in buying Sunwing it is said that Sunwing will do more East while WestJet does the West.
Again this is just what I was told by my friends who work in YWG and have trip insurance if you fly on them in the next year as they get themselves together

I'm not doubting most of what you're saying at all but the WS CEO has very recently stated that leisure TATL out of YYC has seen some success and that they will continue doing so as long as it continues to make them money. What I don't understand is if the 787's are making WS lose a significant amount of money I'd think they'd be able to find a way to get out of their lease earlier, instead of launching AMS this winter on short notice.

https://www.westjet.com/assets/wj-we...ial-Report.pdf
"WestJet reports its second-highest ever third quarter net earnings of $119.4 million"
As far as Q2 and Q3 in 2019 WS made a profit. I don't think that dramatically changed to bleeding cash within just two or three months before covid.

To fall on the WestJet party and here are my two cents. The thing that has hurt WestJet is when they started losing focus on what made them great their “Friendly” customer service and that was one universal fleet in the 737 and then started to buy the Q400, 767, and then the Dreamliner to add to the overhead on maintaining three aircraft types instead of one, to train three different sets of pilots. The expensive cost starting flights to Europe, then kick off flights to Asia. When they complain of a loss of market share in the east, I put the blame on WestJet creating Swoop taking market share away from the mainline carrier. Plus with swoop if flying into Hamilton makes it hard to do interline connections with the mainline carrier, like what Air Canada has with rouge and mainline.

In my opinion WestJet should’ve focused more on maintaining their original model with a universal fleet in the 737 and focus on on giving affordable travel for Canadians all over North America, the Caribbean and Mexico. Than trying to compete with Air Canada on the international stage,

I agree that WS cannot compete with AC on the international level but WS could not have grown without Encore and later Westjet Link. Canada is a relatively small country for an exclusive 737 airline and WS needed the Q400's to expand to smaller communities and get feed to fill up their 737 flights, and so far that has shown to be relatively successful in the west.

I think they could make a small 787 fleet work based out of Vancouver and Calgary. Air Transat for years operated from Western Canada to Europe. It was mostly leisure. Air Transat is going more and more to narrowbody aircraft and has to drop the Western Canada destinations. Air Canada has removed their leisure oriented widebody aircraft (Rouge 767 from service). This creates an opportunity for WestJet.

Out of Toronto it will be harder especially on AirTransat chasing after the same market.

My thoughts as well, WS with its 7 frames would make a good replacement for them. Especially with putting them on popular Europe routes in the summer and down south in the winter I don't think it's much of a reliability, and also provides them with some flexibility.

thenoflyzone Oct 22, 2022 1:25 PM

Just as LH is switching some routes to Eurowings Discover this winter, now LX will switch ZRH-YUL to Edelweiss Air next summer.

It comes with a reduction of frequency as well, but since the WK A343 comes with a significant bump in seats compared to the LX A333, the seats/week is almost identical.
