Sorry, Trevor3. :( Looks like they're still pushing Deer Lake at the expense of Stephenville.
But still good news for the west coast. Deer Lake to get direct flight to Florida Quote:

But that's what we get for putting trust in Brian "Never fulfilled a term" Tobin. It's been all good news for us lately, Porter has been reporting sell-outs and high load factors in their test run this summer which bodes well for expansion and permanent service. I guess we were due for a disappointment. |

Delta news release on Calgary Airport Hotel
|
A little sterile, but great addition.

Canada sure does like glass boxes.

Geez, tough crowd. I like the look of the Calgary Airport Delta.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned Winnipeg lately. I have quite a few friends who work there and they say it's such a terrible building to work in, it's pretty but SOO bad to work.
They said it was so delayed they ended up cutting costs in areas and so many changes last min to try just open it. My friends who work at the airlines say there is not enough gates and when the winter comes there is NO space at all. The only gates that can be used to arrive international flights are Gates 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Transborder/Swing Gates are Gates 2-5 and 6 as optional if needed and board through Gate 5. But WestJet becoming so big they need the gates which pushed the American carriers out. Main US gates are 2, 3 sometimes 4. So the main issue is instead of building those gates that you can go down and go under something like Edmonton has Winnipeg went cheap and built a hall like corridor next to the departure gates. And my friends said you can't board or deplane passengers sometimes because of the arriving passengers from like Mexico and board passengers going to the US. So they need to redo that area if they can. And Transborder is now getting smaller because of WestJets massive charter expansion. They just added Fort Lauderdale, rumours are Delta is putting Atlanta or Seattle and United keeps talking about a Newark and Houston flights. American has been debating of doing a Chicago or Dallas. So my friends said Transborder needs more stuff and a big expansion. Just with all the charters in the winter AC WestJet Transat Sunwing plus the US Carriers they have no gate space at all. The only wide body gate is Gate 6 and if a wide body breaks down at 6 Gate 4 is to be used but they lose the use of Gate 5 so the airport loses a gate. They are finally putting a escalator in for WestJet Encore as they ground load outside. No heater/no air con in the jet bridges for the winter and summer time. They went with these bridges without insulation fr china or Korea instead of these ones fr the states that have. Plus having the steepest bridges in the country. The signs at the airport are very bad, especially for passengers connecting fr a flight in Canada to go to the US, they consider Winnipeg to be like a US Quick Connect. Signs are bad. There are areas where the workers work and it smells like a sewer and the airport authority is not taking responsibility at all. Which was one of the main reasons it was delayed. I've heard Canada Customs is like breaking apart (floors splitting) and was told it had to get like a million dollar renovation, I don't know it that is still happening. The floors are in a lawsuit apparently because in the winter they become so slippery from the wet snow and people have gotten hurt. It's a common use airport but the airport authority won't change or allow expansion of check in counters when needed. Check in hall isn't as big as the workers wanted it, another escalator needed fr level 1 to 2. There is no cover for the departure level roadway. And no cross walk for the hotel like passengers want. Parkade should have another 2 floors and should be covered common the winters are cra cra. Only one door for workers to go from check in hall to gate area unlike the old airport that about four doors. Even for workers to get into Transborder fr the Domestic/Intl side they forgot to put a door in so they made one in the chapel area last min. And no heaters for the airline offices during the winter time, so the employees freeze. And the original plan was to have Us Customs at where Starbuks is to have one central security but transport canada blew that out the window and jammed them in the side and then that kicked the airlines to have their personal offices scattered throughout the building to accommodate a last min change. But I just wanted to let people know, Winnipeg airport is beautiful but it is just a big hassle for the employees to deal with. So if ever flying through don't be mean they have enough issues other then delays and silly passengers. They didn't build it big enough and just addressing some issues I personal know about. Happy flying!! |
Your city's airport airlines
I thought it would be interesting to display all the main/international airlines present at different airports in Canada.
Now for YUL, other than the Canadian airlines (Air Canada, Air Transat, WestJet, Sunwing, Porter), there is: Aeromexico Air Algérie Air France American Airlines British Airways Copa Airlines Corsair International Cubana Delta KLM Lufthansa Qatar Airways Royal Air Maroc Royal Jordanian SATA International Swiss International Syphax Airlines Turkish Airlines United US Airways |
Excluding provincial and national airlines, we have:
Air Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon Air Transat Continental Airlines Sunwing United Airlines And looking at the arrivals/departures for today, there's also: Aegean Airlines Lufthansa |
I merged the three airport threads in the Canada section into one. It seemed silly we had 3 lightly used threads all discussing similar things so I merged them together to create what will hopefully be one quite active thread.
Feel free to discuss anything airport of air travel related here. And if anyone can think of a better name then please pitch it, I'm not the creative type. |

Oh God, not more of the "Great". :haha:
Great idea, though, Left! |
I'm curious when did your city first get an airport?
I was looking at old advertisements published in St. John's newspapers in the 1930s/40s, when we were still independent. You could purchase flights anywhere in the world, via just about any airline in the world, but had to depart from Gander. St. John's didn't have a commercial airport, only what was then the Torbay Air Base (later YYT). A commercial airport terminal was constructed beginning in 1941 and its first arrival and departure were in 1942. For Toronto, it appears as though the process began with land acquisition in 1937, and the first arrival and departure were in 1939. I'm curious if we're all in a similar range, or if any cities were left out for a while, or if another was especially early? |
Calgary's first municipal airport was opened in 1929 in the community of Renfrew. In 1939 the City opened up a gravel runway at the location of our current airport. The terminal at McCall Field (later renamed Calgary International) was opened in 1956.

Wow, that's even older than Gander, which is - as far as I can tell - our oldest commercial airport.
