In that time there was no such thing as Air Canada rouge.....

I was also hoping to see San Diego a couple times a week on ACr but I guess we'll have to wait.

There's still a sizable YUL-PHX market. I am sure it'll also draw a few people flying YUL-TUS as well. I think the market is indeed large enough to justify a seasonal flight - much like how the YUL-RSW and YUL-PBI flights work.

As for what's next for YUL-United States, I would agree that nonstop flights between Montreal and San Diego would be next, albeit I would say it would come after the CS300s are delivered. Besides that, SLC and SEA are still too small of markets from YUL so I think that's it for now.

Zoom out on the map after.

A second terminal has been confirmed by the CEO of YUL. It will be built in the next decade. The current terminal will be at capacity this Summer.

I know very few people in Quebec who have been to Arizona, while many of my colleagues in Ontario go there, mostly those who enjoy golfing.

Yes, Arizona is pretty low on the radar in Quebec. It's partly beaches and the fact there are so many other places in eastern Northern America to go to where this more stuff to do... plus beaches.

If you're a Québécois and you're going to go to the desert, you go to Vegas. Céline is there. The Cirque is there. Plus there is more stuff to do, the Grand Canyon is close. Lots of flashy lights and stuff too, which Québécois people tend to like. :P

Most bikers love to go to Arizona though, and there's a substantial RV crowd that lives there in the winter.

I myself went biking in Arizona back in '08. Tagged it to 5 days in Vegas, so flew in and out of LAS.

The terminal isn't at capacity. It can easily handle 25 million passengers. Problem is, that's assuming the flights are spread out evenly throughout the day, which isn't the case. All the gates are virtually empty from 10am til 2 pm. Everyone wants to fly in/out of here in the morning, from 6am to 10am, and in the evening, from 3 pm til 7pm.

60 gates is a lot of gates for an airport that only handles 16 million passengers. YVR roughly has the same number of gates, and yet easily handles 22 million passengers. YYZ handles almost triple the passenger count of YUL, without 180 gates.

YUL's runways can handle about that, 65-75 movements an hour (arrivals and departures). So i'm of the opinion that building more gates is useless. The average turnaround time of an aircraft is about 1h, 1h30. So building more gates wont accomplish anything. You will push back and start to taxi, only to join the long queue to takeoff. You're waiting either way. So take the damn bus to the remote parking. No difference. It's useless to have more gates than what your runways can handle per hour.

AC needs to spread out its flights more evenly throughout the day. That in itself will help alleviate a lot of the congestion at the airport. Either way, they won't have any choice in a year or two. As you said, peak times, the gates are full.

Well that's the same as a subway where for the rush hour, there's too many people at the same time. That's what at capacity is about...

The CEO mentionned in the annual report that the runways are good for about 50M passengers and a new one won't be required for at least 50 years.

Maybe "congestion pricing" for gate space might be an idea. If you want premium gate time, be prepared to pay for it. Also, perhaps considering using larger planes less often might be an idea worthy of merit.

I always assumed that the aero space industries (even outside of bombardier and boeing) would be able to push for a Seattle-Montreal flight. Maybe it because I had to do the flight often early in my Career and always had to connect in Vancouver.

I didn't know YYZ and YUL are the only airports that serve MIA in Canada.

I always assumed the same for Montreal-Tokyo, since both have huge video game industry players.

Yeah, that is a big common industry between the two. Though it should be noted that while Montreal is a massive heavyweight in game production (the sheer number of AAA games made in Montreal studios in the past few years is astounding), it's pretty much all branch plants of foreign-based companies. The developers are in Montreal but the corporate big wigs aren't.

I would be interested to know how much leakage from YOW to YUL is occurring. I don't use YOW myself anymore.

Saskatchewan to Phx non-stop flights have been popular for years, especially since Saskatchewan snowbird travelers prefer to reside in drier/sunny environment & go hiking or relax by the pool & no risk of hurricanes that plague east coast destinations. Plus it has all the main Pro Sports teams.

Congratulations to Montreal in getting this new inaugural air route!

I don't really get the appeal of Phoenix. It's so... bleh. Nothing exciting about it.

There's some pretty cool stuff outside of Phoenix, but the city itself holds very little interest for me.

My parents used to snowbird in Phoenix (Scottsdale to be exact), but they got bored fast. They have since moved there winter hibernation to Palm Springs for the past few years.

Same. Phoenix is huge but predominantly bleh. At least Palm Springs is very much within driving distance of much more than bleh. Of course, we love to golf so Palm Springs in and of itself isn't so bleh, and it's equally clean and quiet.
