I see that Westjet will be back again this summer with those short hops across the pond on the Transatlantic ‘737s. With a strong tailwind....the St. John’s-Dublin flight can do it in just under 4 hrs.

YYT-LGW
YHZ-GLA

(Halifax will also Has a ‘737 flight to Dublin and Paris on ASL French Airlines)

Ahem....I think you mean YHZ-GLA.

If you're flying across the Atlantic to get to LGA from Halifax, you're getting taken for a ride worse than any cab driver who takes the 'quick' way across town ;)

AC810/811 has been removed from the online schedule and booking system completely. Seems like a permanent route closure to me. Why would they do that if they plan on reinstating the route? Closing sales, even for a short while, will only hurt the flight, not promote it.

They had already suspended the flight til March 1, and it was to be resumed on a 3x to 5x weekly basis after that for the summer season. When this was announced a few weeks ago, it seemed like the start of the end for this flight anyways.

No doubt all the recent violence in Turkey has had a huge impact on flights to IST. It's one thing if the violence is contained within the city, but when airports are just as much a target, it will deter connecting passengers as well. Although, a colleague of mine flew to Pakistan via Istanbul a few weeks ago on TK and he said the flight was full in both directions. TK's product isn't better than AC's IMO, so if it's full, I'm surprised AC can't make a go of it anymore.

WestJet sweetens up summer schedule

Adds route between Winnipeg and Abbotsford, 21 additional flights

CALGARY, Feb. 20, 2017 /CNW/ - WestJet today announced plans to connect two long-standing WestJet destinations with the addition of service between Winnipeg and Abbotsford. WestJet today also announced 21 incremental flights across the network that will serve both business and leisure travellers.

WestJet is now connecting Winnipeg and Abbotsford (CNW Group/WestJet)

Starting April 30, 2017, WestJet will add Abbotsford as its 13th non-stop destination from Winnipeg and will increase frequency on routes to Edmonton and Hamilton. WestJet has served Abbotsford since 1997 and Winnipeg since 1996.

The airline will increase its number of non-stop flights between Abbotsford and Edmonton from 13 per week to 20 and service between Winnipeg and Edmonton will increase from 21 flights per week to 24 beginning April 30. Daily service between Winnipeg and Hamilton begins May 1. With these additions, WestJet will operate 60 weekly departures from Abbotsford and 204 departures from Winnipeg by May 2017, reinforcing WestJet's position as the number one air carrier in both these markets.

"WestJet has built its reputation as Canada's low-fare leader since 1996 and these flights further solidify this position," said Brian Znotins, WestJet Vice-President, Network Planning, Corporate Development and Alliances. "WestJet has proudly and consistently served the people of Abbotsford, the lower mainland and Winnipeg for more than 20 years while many other airlines have come and gone. Our reputation as Canada's low-fare leader is a position we will maintain as competition increases. We are pleased to connect two important WestJet markets this summer."

"WestJet's growth in Abbotsford is great news for our city, as our population continues to grow at record rates in the Fraser Valley," said Henry Braun, Abbotsford Mayor. "These new routes will ensure we continue to attract business investment and employment opportunities to the communities east of the Fraser. Cross-country routes solidify our international airport's role as a regional hub and as an integral part of the provincial transportation network."

"More air travel options for Winnipeg is always welcome news," said Pascal Bélanger, Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer for the Winnipeg Airports Authority. "Today's announcement is a reflection of our growing partnership with WestJet and gives our community more options as we head into the busy summer travel season."

The airline also announced it will increase seasonal capacity on a number of other existing routes. Starting May 2, Edmonton and Hamilton will add six weekly flights for a total of 10 and on May 6, flights between Hamilton and Halifax will increase from seven to eight weekly flights.

All flights will be operated on board WestJet's Boeing 737 aircraft featuring Plus seating and WestJet Connect, WestJet's inflight entertainment system accessed directly through smartphones, tablets or computers. Almost 75 per cent of WestJet's Boeing fleet is equipped with WestJet Connect.

All flights provide WestJet Rewards members the opportunity to earn WestJet dollars to be used towards the payment of a WestJet-marketed flight or a WestJet Vacations package (excluding taxes, fees and charges).

I found something kind of interesting: on Boeing's website you can search its orders and deliveries database by country. For Canada, it provides the breakdown of every aircraft directly ordered by and delivered to Canadian carriers, including defunct airlines like Wardair and CP, and includes aircraft types manufactured by Douglas and later McDonnell Douglas that have since been acquired by Boeing.

Search by country and choose Canada.

Quote:

Country (Canada) Summary Through January 2017
Type______707__727__737__747__767__777__787__DC-8_DC-9_DC-10_Total
Orders_____7____46____308__21___41____23___37___53____50____9_____595
Deliveries___7____46____175__21___41____23___23___53____50____9_____448
Unfilled_____0____0_____133__0____0_____0____14___0_____0_____0_____147
Edit: Well it looks like the formatting went to hell on that summary table. Let me try something... That did it.

It looks like Canada was pretty solidly a Douglas country in the early years. The 707 was trounced by the DC8, and 5 of the 7 707s were bought by the Canadian Forces. Interesting to see, too, that there are about one-third as many ordered Boeing aircraft currently awaiting delivery as have previously been delivered by Boeing and Douglas/McDonnell Douglas in all of Canada's history.

It's funny you should mention this. A colleague of mine traveled TK on YUL-IST-YUL back in october or November I believe, and the flight out was almost empty, and the flight back to YUL was full.

As for the second part of your statement, hard or soft products aside, TK's costs (labour, amongst others) are much lower than AC's. So if all else is equal, you can definately have a situation where AC loses money to iST and TK makes money. This being said, I find it hard to believe TK makes money on their flights to YYZ/YUL.

Wow very cool! Nice find! Interesting that Westjet didn't buy any new planes until 2000, only had 2nd hand (or 3rd hand) before then

For American built aircraft the other interesting one is the L1011. Air Canada had a good number of them 1970-1990s. Air Transat also loved second hand L1011s.

The numbers also don't reflect second hand aircraft. A good percentage of the 767 in Canada are second-hand. I get them impression Air Canada usually purchased new on most types, but the 767 is a weird fleet, it merged their originally 767 with the CPAir/Canadian and a host of others from Hawaiian and a variety of other airlines.

That's cool. What's the main advantage of flying into Abbotsford? Do people ever substitute that airport for Vancouver? I was surprised at how few flights go out of that airport - less than Prince George!

The Fraser valley is a growing region. There are also communities such as Langley that may find it convenient. All said, Vancouver has far more flights and destinations.

Well in a way every route cancellation is "temporary". They may start it up again in 3 years or so when the economy rebounds, or it may stay 'temporarily' suspended for many years.

2017 will be another great year for YUL ! With the revised 2016 numbers though, we will need a 9% increase in order to reach 18 million.

Fast forward to today and WS is rapidly expanding in YUL and not deploying new aircraft to YYZ. Why the change in focus?

I find it hard to believe that WS has run out of profitable flying from YYZ. My thinking is that WS has run out of room at YYZ. With AB economy in the tank and YYZ out of room at commercially profitable times, WS has no where else to go but to YUL.

There is one more reason why WS is expanding service at YUL. I don't want to post it online though. PM me if you want to hear it.

What would be cool is if it was the start to a stronger alliance with Air France.
