With crickets making more noise than the economy in the west, WS has to ply their Q's somewhere. Nice additions for YUL, now we'll see how the Québécois respond to the 'anglo' airline in their backyard. Get ready, AK, that's another 500+ movements every month.

Too bad YQM isn't on the initial expansion list. Hopefully it gets added.

Indeed. AC has a stranglehold on the Moncton/Montreal route, and are adding another flight this year for 6X daily, but WJ would be a great addition. There's a lot of traffic on the Montreal service out of Moncton (a natural given the Acadian connection).

WJ is increasing their Moncton/Toronto service to 3X daily this year. I'm sure that Moncton/Montreal must be on their radar for future expansion.

Forgot to add YUL-YOW to that list. Probably not initially, but once the focus city operation develops.

Some other good news for YUL. At yesterday's unveiling, AC CEO Calin Rovinescu said that "after Shanghai, it's not over for Montreal. The Montreal community will still have something to celebrate" (Link in french only, so you westerners can brush up on your french. Or use google translate !)

http://www.ledevoir.com/economie/act...nge-de-couleur

Some quick facts that are mentioned.

AC carried 8.3 million passengers in/out of YUL in 2016 (+11.5%)
AC's transatlantic capacity from YUL in summer 2017 will be 19% greater than 2016. This is an 81% increase in the last 3 years.

Also, a second terminal is in the planning stages for YUL. In between the two parallel runways. A tunnel will supposedly link both terminals. If a 4% growth rate is achieved in the next few years, YUL will see 20 million passengers by 2020. Interview with new ADM CEO Philippe Rainville. Again, link in french only.

http://www.tvanouvelles.ca/2017/02/1...agrandissement

Will the new train have a stop at this new terminal? That would be great .. I also wonder if the new terminal will be domestic or transborder only?

We know about the route announcements, but I'm hoping for something larger to attract the Transport Minister. Perhaps this will be a commitment fromWS to abide by the same customer facing language provisions as AC public participation act requirements.

Back one year ago, WS signed a long term commercial agreement with GTAA that was on similar terms to the AC LTA. The AC LTA gave rebates for exceptional pax growth at YYZ and gave fixed cost fee environment so long as reasonable growth targets were met.

Fast forward to today and WS is rapidly expanding in YUL and not deploying new aircraft to YYZ. Why the change in focus?

I find it hard to believe that WS has run out of profitable flying from YYZ. My thinking is that WS has run out of room at YYZ. With AB economy in the tank and YYZ out of room at commercially profitable times, WS has no where else to go but to YUL.

Interesting idea. A flight attendant base for both Encore and mainline would make sense when it comes to hiring French speaking flight attendants.

Do they base any inflight staff out of Montreal currently or is it all Calgary and Toronto?

Possibly - it's a long way from the Q400 to Max 8 (since Max 7 is now bigger and may not happen).

Max 7 is only 76 inches longer then the 737-700 adding 12 seats in 2 rows. Still smaller then the Max 8.

And that's a pretty big hole from the Q400 to there.

No. YUL sees a lot of heavies. Much more so than YYC. Meaning that even with 1 million more passengers, YUL has less movements than YYC. This past summer, I've counted over 26 heavies on the ground at YUL at once. See below for aircraft movement numbers...

No yet. Next year. 2016 numbers as follows.

226,402 for YUL (+3%)
234,426 for YYC (-6%)

These are NavCan numbers.

Don't know for flight attendants, but for pilots, according to this, nothing in YUL. Domiciles only in YYZ, YYC and YVR. Although I remember seeing on the very same page, more choices for pilots, including "home bases" such as YOW. But never YUL.

I don't know. I would hope so. But if we go by the timelines suggested, the LRT should be operational before any new terminal gets built.

Good question. Maybe with all the AC expansion at YUL, this is WS trying to start something, to not block themselves out of the market completely later? Gate space is already an issue at peak departure times. Maybe it was a "now or never" thing. The situation in AB and the YYZ congestion certainly play in our favor, but I would think YUL on a stand alone basis deserves some credit for these routes!

You can only neglect a market of 4 million ppl for so long!

New Montreal - Tel Aviv flight

http://aircanada.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=1110

Quote:

MONTREAL, Feb. 13, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - Air Canada announced today a significant expansion in services between Canada and Israel, with the introduction of a seasonal non-stop service between Montreal and Tel Aviv and an increase in its current Toronto-Tel Aviv non-stop service to a daily frequency year-round. With the new services beginning this summer – a 28 per cent capacity increase over summer 2016 – Air Canada will be the airline offering the most seats and frequencies between Canada and Israel.

"Air Canada is the leader in the Canada-Israel market, which we have now served for 22 years. Today we are pleased to step up our capacity in response to the increased demand in business, leisure and cultural travel between both countries. As of June 2017, Air Canada will be launching a new seasonal non-stop service between Montreal and Tel Aviv, strengthening our hub in Montreal, which will also offer convenient connections throughout Canada and the U.S.," said Calin Rovinescu, President and Chief Executive of Air Canada.

"This new service also reflects Air Canada's ongoing international expansion strategy, from which Montreal is deriving significant benefits. This month Air Canada will launch new service to Shanghai from the city and for next summer we have already announced new routes to Algiers, Marseille, Reykjavík and Dallas from Montreal," said Mr. Rovinescu.

"In the same week as the inauguration of a non-stop Air Canada service to Shanghai, it is with pride today that we welcome a new international link with Tel Aviv. This important investment demonstrates the vitality of our city and Montreal's relevance as a North American aviation hub. This new air link by Air Canada will facilitate travel and trade between our two cities and countries. Coming only a few months after Montreal's trade mission to Israel, this new route is a concrete example of the strength of the economic, family and community ties that unite us," said Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montreal.

Toronto's current service will increase this summer to daily from six days a week while the new Montreal-Tel Aviv service will operate twice weekly from June 22 to October 16, 2017. The Montreal flight will be operated with a 292-seat Airbus A330-300 aircraft with three cabins of service, including Air Canada's International Business Class cabin, featuring 27 Executive Pods with 180- degree lie-flat seats all configured for direct aisle access. The Premium Economy cabin has 21 seats that offer generous personal space, wider seats and extra legroom and recline, as well as premium meals, complimentary bar service and priority check-in and baggage delivery at the airport. The Economy cabin has 244 seats providing comfortable personal space and a state-of-the-art individual on-demand entertainment system. All flights are timed for convenient connections with Air Canada's extensive domestic and transborder network.

Tickets for the new Montreal-Tel Aviv service will be available for sale beginning Wednesday, February 15, 2017, subject to final government approval.

That didn't take long. Pretty obvious AC was not going to let TS have all the glory to TLV ! With this flight, it's now a 28% increase for AC this summer over the Atlantic compared to last ! Another "potential 2018 network opportunity" route that comes to fruition. Exciting times for YUL and Montrealers !

Interesting they chose the A333 for the route (4764 nm), which are only 230t MTOW. Westbound flights might be payload restricted out of TLV. Early afternoon departure doesn't help. High temps and all.

This is a route where the newer built A333 (240t or 242t frame) would have an advantage.

WestJet new YUL "Hub" annoucement

http://www.newswire.ca/news-releases...613590633.html

Quote:

ALGARY, Feb. 13, 2017 /CNW/ - WestJet today announced a significant investment in Quebec's travel and tourism market with increased service and new routes to and from Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport as well as Quebec City's Jean Lesage International Airport. Overall, the airline is adding 105 more flights per week in the province, a capacity increase of 74 per cent.

"Our unique brand of great service and low fares has been embraced across Canada for more than 20 years and today, WestJet is here to offer more choice and competition to the Quebec market," said Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President Commercial. "The people in Quebec have traditionally been served by a legacy carrier and WestJet believes this significant additional investment in the province will give leisure and corporate travellers a choice in airlines and bring lower fares to more than 8.2 million Quebecers. We look forward to flying hundreds of thousands of travellers to and from this beautiful province to enjoy the area and conduct business. As always, we are committed to making air travel in Canada better."

"The City of Montreal is pleased with the increased frequency of WestJet flights. The year 2017 marks Montreal's 375th anniversary and this announcement is perfectly timed to help to promote our city internationally while creating local jobs", said Harout Chitilian, Vice-President of the executive committee of the City of Montreal, responsible for information technology, smart city, administrative reform and youth.

Starting June 15, WestJet will begin point-to-point service for the first time within the province with four daily flights between Montreal and Quebec City. On March 15, WestJet will launch twice-daily service between Montreal and Halifax. And, on October 15, WestJet will begin twice-daily service between Montreal and Boston.

In addition, the airline will also increase its number of non-stop flights between Montreal and Vancouver from six per week to 12. WestJet's operations between Montreal and Calgary will increase from 14 flights per week to 19. The airline's Quebec City and Toronto service will add one more daily flight for a total of three. With the addition of WestJet's new services the airline will operate 195 weekly departures from Montreal and 50 departures from Quebec City by October 2017.

"I want to thank WestJet for its confidence and support to develop Montreal-Trudeau as a hub," said Phillipe Rainville, CEO of Aeroports de Montreal. "With these three destinations, WestJet will now offer an average of eight additional flights per day and 33 per cent more seats departing from Montreal, which is excellent news for our passengers."

All three new routes will be operated by WestJet's regional airline, WestJet Encore and its fleet of Canadian-made Bombardier Q400s. WestJet is proud to support this iconic Canadian company based in Montreal and flies the fourth largest fleet of Q400s in the world. By mid-2018, the regional airline will have a total of 45 aircraft.

Routes to Vancouver and Calgary will be operated on WestJet's fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft featuring the enhanced Plus product and WestJet Connect, WestJet's Wi-Fi connected, inflight entertainment system.
