I should probably mention that the Queensboro, aka 59th Street Bridge, has been renamed in honor of former and longtime mayor Ed Koch. So I'll just call it the Ed Koch Queensboro 59th Street Memorial Bridge and Crossing...:)

Another very nice thread. Certainly the bridges are one of the biggest assets of New York that make that city unique. Many other cities in the world have skyscrapers, in some of them there are even taller than the ones of NY now. Some cities have a large bridge, maybe two or three to show off, but I don't know of any other city that have so many large and beautiful bridges than NY, there's at least a dozen major bridges of many types, plus countless smaller or mid-sized bridges.
I want to share these images from a user from flickr. I don't know flickr very well, only a few weeks ago this user had dozens of albums, and one of them, very interesting with like a hundred pictures of the GWB from the inside, and from the top of it (He made an internship at the Port Authority). But now the album is gone of sight, apparently the pictures are still there but you can`t see the album along many others he had. Anyway I'll post some pictures I posted at SSC, the links do work but I don't know why you can't see the rest of the photos. This is the bridge itself from the top of the west tower: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3096/2...48411fca_z.jpg _MG_0208 por vanshnookenraggen, en Flickr http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3256/2...a17475f8_b.jpg _MG_0238 por vanshnookenraggen, en Flickr And these are two spectacular panoramas from the top of the bridge, click the links to see them (as well as the previous ones) full resolution http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3010/2...8364fe57_b.jpg George Washinton Bridge Panorama 4-2 por vanshnookenraggen, en Flickr http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3169/2...3bec3555_b.jpg George Washinton Bridge Panorama 5-2 por vanshnookenraggen, en Flickr There are many more, but as I said, I don't know how to access them anymore, maybe he marked them as private? There is this other album from the same user, one of the few that remain visible, that have some pictures of the Hell Gate Bridge, also from the inside and from the top of it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/vanshno...7624181541267/ |

The bridges of New York outside the 50th street station.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7002/6...48959c5e_b.jpg Bridges of New York por Hobo Matt, en Flickr That photo was taken from a blog of a guy named Matt Green, have you heard of him? He's a dude that already took a walk across the entire United States, from Rockaway Beach, N.Y. to Rockaway Beach, Oregon. Now he intends to walk EVERY SINGLE STREET OF NEW YORK CITY, of all five Boroughs :omg: that is like 8000 miles :eeekk: and he expects to complete that for about two years. here's the link to the NYT article that tells his story: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/25/ny...2&pagewanted=1 Well, he's already doing it and has a blog: http://imjustwalkin.com/ where he post pictures and some videos of curious things, like the window of the bridges, that he goes finding along his way. Kind of odd but pretty interesting as well. |
