REGINA | Warehouse District, Chinatown, etc...
 

Great pictures! I was wondering if your third photothread would be of the Warehouse District, which looks pretty cool from Bing Maps. I am glad that you got around to there.

The Warehouse District looks ripe for gentrification. Some beautiful structures throughout. I think Edmonton has around the same amount of old residential buildings as Regina...but it's just a guess, considering the two were closer in size before and that Edmonton has ripped up a lot of history. Nice clear photographs.

Interesting again. Thanks! Houses and apartments are virtually indistinguishable from Winnipeg's but the warehouses all seem to come from the early art deco/art moderne period (maybe not quite the right description) which is represented in just the tag end of older Winnipeg downtown warehouses and commercial buildings (in terms of time period). I haven't been to Regina since about 1980 so I'd really forgotten what its "vernacular" was like.

Nice job there flar! Your eye is in its usual top shape. I like those antique WALK-DONT WALK street lights, we used to have them in Ottawa long ago.

Great stuff. It's nice to see Saskatchewan getting the Flar treatment.

Nothing beats a good warehouse - they are strong, simple, and age beautifully. I liked all the different styles of lettering throughout. :tup:

Bob Sim (of The Wireless Age, Sim Electric, etc.) bought that building in the late 90's. It was converted as each floor being a seperate 5000 sq.ft condo. Bob took the top floor (obviously) and added a rooftop deck and pool. The third floor is a gay couple and the second floor is an old retired couple. My Dad owns the condo on the first floor.

Riding up and down in the old freight elevator is fun! The basement is creepy and old though, very dark down there.

I walked down Victoria yesterday to downtown. I'm pretty sure I went passed some of the houses you showed here. I didn't being my camera with me since the lighting has been absolutely terrible the last couple days due to fog/overcast skies.

So much potential...so quintessentially Regina.

Very nice, as were the first two sets of photos. Did you get a chance to see the old GM assembly plant? It was only used for a few years prior to WWII but it was gigantic and still is.

Beautiful and diverse brick buildings. And the ethnic communities are refreshing to see.

I didn't make it over to the old auto plant, I only went a block or so east of Broad. Impressive though.

The thing is, that's probably the furthest from the truth. Regina is booming right now with multiple towers pending (Regina sized 12-25 storey towers, not LA sized onces ;) ) and a huge football stadium project...not to mention the global transportation hub.

But the area he shot in this last installment is among the oldest areas in the city, so of course everything looks a little run down. Would be nice if the city would at least paint the rust on the traffic light poles though. :)

This is true. As the Western world is crashing (or was ...), Saskatchewan is booming.

its strange how there is a lack of brick houses, but every store and warehouse is brick.
