A gray and rainy day in Tiburon
Tiburon is a small, very expensive town just north of San Francisco. It sits at the end of a small peninsula that separates Richardson Bay from the rest of San Francisco Bay. Last Sunday morning I took a bike ride around the Tiburon peninsula. I'm a mountain biker and don't usually ride on the road, but we've had so much rain here in Northern California that I had little choice – the hills are just too muddy right now. I didn't really intend to take a bunch of pictures, but it's so scenic I couldn't help myself. Anyway, here's a quick bike tour of Tiburon (and a little bit of Belvedere) on a rainy day.

Lyford had this tower built in 1889. It was envisioned as the grand gateway to a housing development he had planned for the area. His development plan never happened (custom houses are now built there), but some of his street names and the tower he built survived: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4057/...c7e584e2_b.jpg View from Lyford Tower: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4065/...ede79c97_b.jpg Inside – Nice day and location for a fire: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4063/...ee9abac2_b.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2456/...bb01a3ce_b.jpg Richardson Bay Park: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4070/...980ea106_b.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4069/...dea2ebb9_b.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2800/...d6946466_b.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4008/...fc9a1c05_b.jpg When not building stone towers, Dr. Lyford was hanging out in this victorian: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4070/...9578178c_b.jpg The ride on the backside of the peninsula looks mostly like this with bay views off to the right: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4062/...1eb86ea2_b.jpg Paradise Cay: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4014/...4c4e35a5_b.jpg The last 5 miles or so, we got dumped on and by the time we got back the view through my glasses looked something like this: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2709/...62a6ac45_b.jpg Thanks for stopping by! |

Don't you get your picture taken when entering Tiburon now? |
I love that yellow victorian house near the end. Nice photos. I love Marin when it's cold and rainy. Thanks!
|
Beautiful area!
|
WOW, the tiny victorian home looks so cool!
|
Nice shots! This is a very scenic town...
|
Nice set, PG!
I always heard that Tiburon was one of the most expensive towns for real estate in the whole country. True? |
Thanks for the comments, everyone.
Hoodrat - according to BusinessWeek, it's the 27th most expensive small town in the country. BT - There was a proposal awhile back to photograph every car's license plate going in and out, but I don't think that has been implemented yet. stepper - I like the rain, the cold I can do without! WesternGulf - they do look very similar, but Sausalito's is a bit larger and much busier most of the time. |
That's a precious little village ya got there. Very nice.
|
Thank you for the great local coverage! I will add that the Lyford House (yellow Victorian) is now used as the headquarters for the small Richardson Bay Audubon Center and Sanctuary located on that part of the peninsula. The house was originally located across the bay at Strawberry Point, the bayside part of Mill Valley. It was built in 1870's and barged across the bay in 1957!
|
Thanks Pete.
geo - I knew it had been moved across the bay, but not when or any other particulars. Thanks for the info. It got me to look into the history a bit more, which is pretty fascinating. |
Nice coverage.

more photo threads like this please!

Thanks guys, and Evergrey, I'll do my best!

It is amazing that such a quaint looking town can be within visual range of a big city like SF. Nice photos. They give me a happy feeling. :)
Is it normal for folks to let their big boats just lay sideways on the beach like that at low tide? |
with all the exposure that the Bay and GG bridges get, it's nice to see a bit of the R-SR Bridge in the Paradise Cay shot.
|
Great tour - amazing to see the transformation from that huge railyard.
