NEW YORK | Goethels Bridge (Replacement)

http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/...icle-1.1326769

The Goethals Bridge is getting a $1.5 billion replacement.

The Port Authority announced Wednesday it has formed its first public-private partnership to build a wider, bike-friendly, high-tech cable-stayed span linking Staten Island to Elizabeth, N.J.

The new Goethals, set to be completed in 2017, will be the first bridge built by the Port Authority since it opened the George Washington Bridge 80 years ago.

bears a striking resemblance to the new tappan zee

Busy Bee Mar 8, 2016 6:20 PM

Makes you wonder if they piggybacked on the Tappen Zee design to save on unique engineering and design fees.

Can't wait for it to finish. The traffic backup due to certain lane and exit closures sucks. If you make that wrong turn, with the truck traffic, it could be a costly 40 minute mistake.

Hoping the PA, and other city agencies do more public-private partnerships like this. Such a no brainier.

Beautiful span - 2017 completion sound very aggressive though.

to quote Kent Brockman, it's about f*cking time, great news!

Also very similar to the proposed new Koscuiszko Bridge between Brooklyn and Queens.

I just hope the lanes will be wide enough. Driving this bridge (and pretty much any bridge in NYC) can be harrowing, especially when there is a bus or truck in the next lane.

I seen to remember the lanes being an extra two feet in width. I've gone over the Goethels dozens of times to get cheap ciggs/gas. I always use the left lane so I'm closer to the barrier and can better judge my leeway room. It's a very, very tight bridge.

Busy Bee Mar 29, 2016 11:11 PM

I understand pretty much any new bridge, in and outside of metro NY, to have a standard 12' lane width.

That's just the most superficial issue about the bridge. Although they are similar there are huge differences between them. There are many similar bridges, they are cable stayed bridges, which is just a typology used in many bridges around the world, but each one must be different to another.

First is the size, Tappan is much bigger than this one, The main span is longer (making the towers taller) it is also wider, with four lanes in each direction vs 3 on Goethals. Finally, the total lenght of the Tappan Bridge is much longer, with a roadway extending 4 kilometers in the widest part of the Hudson.

There are many other differences, such as the soil where they stand. The towers of Tappan are just in the middle of the Hudson River, while in this case will be near the shore in a much smaller waterway.

There are many other details that must be different, such as the conection to the existing freeways.

So there is no way that they just could translate the Tappan Bridge here. They are two completely different bridges. And anyway, the two bridges are being built by two different agencies. Goethals by the Port Authority and Tappan by the State of New York.

I think the Goethals will be three lanes in one direction, four in the other. There will also be a pedestrian/bike lane.

I see this every day. Hell, I could see where I work in this pic! :haha: (Hint: smoke stacks)

Can't wait for this to finish. Truck traffic is a pain because of the detours.
