Watched a great doc I think on Science last night about the construction of 111 and how they anchor such a tall, thin scraper.

I don't know, like most of those SCI docs it's about 15 minutes of actual interesting coverage and the rest of that time talking about other things. Honestly nothing any of us following this thread wouldn't already know.

But yeah, I still watched it.

New York is Alive and ‘Reinventing Its Skyline Continuously,’ Says Manhattan-Based Architect

https://images.mansionglobal.com/im-...777&width=1280

JANUARY 27, 2020
BY LUCY COHEN BLATTER

Quote:

Gregg Pasquarelli is a founding partner and key principal at SHoP, a New York-based architectural firm which he co-founded in 1996. The firm is responsible for buildings like 111 West 57th Street, also known as the Steinway Tower, in Midtown Manhattan, and the American Copper Building in Murray Hill.

The Steinway is the second tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere, having recently topped out at 1,428 feet after the installation of a 300-foot decorative steel crown that pays homage to Manhattan’s skyscrapers from the pre-war Golden Age.

We caught up with Mr. Pasquarelli, 54, to discuss the importance of going against the curve, what New York’s supertalls tell you about the health of the market, and more.
Quote:

Mansion Global: Describe your dream property.

Gregg Pasquarelli: The most important thing is to have really good space inside, but also a connection to a really good space outside. Whether that’s a loft with a rooftop terrace, or a “Classic 6” or “Classic 7” with a view of the river.

I had a choice of a full river view or a city skyline view, and I chose the city view and am really happy I did.

Upstate, I have a view of a waterfall, but in the city I like getting the view of the skyline. I can look at the skyline and think, “Hey, we did that.”
Quote:

MG: What’s the biggest surprise in the luxury real estate market now?

GP: The abundance of glass. Good light is important, but good light and a lot of light are not the same thing. I love modernism, but I think sometimes we need a pause from so much glass.

GP: These supertalls are interesting; they’re a symbol that New York is alive and doing well. And that we have a city that’s alive and reinventing its skyline continuously. You can live in places that give you vantage points that were never possible before.

Also, that there’s not just one type of luxury. You have the pre-wars—the “classic 7s” and “classic 8s,” but also amazing lofts, black boxes in the sky, et cetera. Moving toward the sky has given us so many ways of looking at luxury. It’s not just about Central Park West or Park or Fifth avenues.

wow closeup pics of the 111 crown evolution, amazing !!! . .
you can see so clearly exactly what's going on up there . .
and still not have the slightest clue whatsoever . . what's IS all that shit ? . .
but that's a good thing . . its unique, it's multifaceted, it's highly designed . .
thought through . . enigmatic . . all those lines, beams . .
It's like looking into piano innards . . a Steinway reference ? . . duh ! . .
surely that's already been mentioned somewhere, I suppose . .
anyway that just dawned on me . .

Oh Hi new phone background!

NYguy Feb 1, 2020 2:05 AM

^ I would also like to see that with Steinway and CPT lit up, but that is striking.

Reserving judgement until I see more of it, but the cladding on the crown is more see-through than I expected. I'm worried that the underlying structure (which is cool by itself but not harmonious with the beautifully intricate facade design) is too visible. Probably won't be too noticeable once it's fully clad since it's so far up there.

I am guessing that when both sides have the cladding it won't be see through anymore. The lighting at night is what I am wondering about. Will it be lit from within, or from the outside some how. Either way this crown is looking amazingly detailed. This whole tower is beautiful!

NYguy Feb 1, 2020 5:42 PM

I’m guessing from within.

This will look so amazing when they light this beautiful crown.

eXodius Feb 1, 2020 10:35 PM

Looks like there's some dangling lights in the crown...? From that last render NYguy posted! I wonder if it'll change color or offer any special effects! Either way, excited to see this completed!

The lighting evokes jewelry at the crown and shimmer down the cladding of this very feminine and graceful tower. Dynamic changes to the lighting are linked to the lunar cycle and visually connect the crown to the ground level.

L’O scope includes the façade lighting for both the new tower and Steinway Hall, all terraces, performance spaces in Steinway Hall, amenities areas as well as millwork in the residential units.

Looks like there is definitely more bronze on the north facade than those option diagrams show.

yeah that's what i was thinking.

there are a lot of bronze sections already up that don't match up with the renders.

or dont seem to so far.

more bronze is a good thing though.
