Houston's got some great postmodern architecture. I'm so proud of what's going up in our city!

I think it's a tease. They must know the developers can't get financing...:jester:

This terrible Tower of Traffic must be stopped, so people won't have shorter commutes to their jobs! Let them all spend more time on the roads driving into town from distant suburbs!

EVERYBODY is a NIMBY about something.......its all about what is happening in your "territory", remember at the core, we are just animals.

I see your point, but I don't know if I entirely agree. Maybe it's much less common, but some people do consider the greater good. :)

Maybe the issue though is some people's "territory" is greater than others...their back yards are city-wide.

From Swamplot 9-18-09

http://swamplot.com/wp-content/uploa...avoy-hotel.jpg

"Houston’s first-ever highrise apartment building will be demolished next Friday, September 25th, a spokesman for the Houston Police Department announced today. Neighborhood Protection inspectors have determined that structural problems with the vacant-and-crumbling 1906 Savoy Apartments building (later the Savoy Hotel) require it to be taken down as quickly as possible. The Houston Press’s Craig Malisow reports:

[HPD's Mark Curran] said the police have had difficulty contacting the owner, who is currently in Lebanon. (Curran didn’t remember his name off-hand, but a 2007 Press story identified him as Michael Nassif). The owner has 10 days to file an appeal, Curran said.

The nearby Metro line will need to be closed during the demolition – hopefully not longer than Friday-Sunday, Curran said.

Curran also said that the building would be guarded continuously until it is torn down."

So this one comes down. Hope something grand and tall, very tall will rise in its place. Its right off the rain line so it already has great location. I know you can make something good out of this Houston...

Ritz Carlton to step back into the Houston market with the first project slatted for The Woodlands! Unfortunately, the project may be put off for a while due to the economy.

doubtful. the owner still owns the lot (or at least holds the lease) and the taller savoy building is staying.

I should have said 4 new projects over the past 2 years. Could also count the park as a project in itself...

vjhe Nov 5, 2009 2:21 AM

While I don't think the Perennial is bad, I do find it totally uninspiring. At this point, I'm not really surprised to see something uninspiring in Houston now, however it is still always disappointing nontheless. ESPECIALLY in such a high profile location.

In terms of all tower architecture, I would agree, but in terms of Houston architecture, this would really stand out. And even though it's nothing groundbreaking, I'm excited for a little more variety in Houston skyscrapers, regardless of the style.

It's the weather. When the sky turns rainy and gray, it's just yuck for photos. All the colors become dulled and distorted. Plus, it's pretty drab looking anyway when the weather is like that. Nighttime photography though when the weather is cloudy, is really nice. It makes for some really interesting skies since the light actually shows the texture and shape of the clouds at night. Everything is also lit more evenly at night since the city lights are reflected by the clouds.

I thought maybe it was also the smaller number of buildings coming out of the ground these days.

This is a map of the Woodlands Waterway development, the area I have outlined in purple has yet to be built. Most of the yellow buildings along the waterway are going to be 6-12 story midrises. The neighborhood on the left of the map will be a dense recreation of a new Orleans neighborhood and the areas that have been completed really do look amazing, like, it almost fooled me that they were new. The amount of detail is incredible and the scope of the whole development is also quite incredible.
