There is a proposal to give a major facelift to the fugly concrete slab on the southwest corner of Bleury and Rene-Levesque. It will be known as the Point Zero Hotel.

That is great news! So-long to one of Montreal's sorriest downtown high rises.

Cette réno lui fera grand bien, combinée avec le Marriott Courtyard voisin qui monte.

Il ne restera qu'à son voisin à l'ouest et à l'immeuble de Revenu Canada en diagonale nord-est à se refaire une beauté eux aussi. En espérant que ce dernier ne soit pas déjà considéré comme «patrimonial» et que la facture achitecturale ne puisse y être altérée.

Moi je suis simplement surpris que durant le boom de gratte-ciel durant les années 60 et 70, ils ont presque uniquement construit des immeubles entre 12 et 17 étages. Regardez bien rené-Lévesque depuis Amherst et Guy, a l'exception de CIBC, PVM, 1250, Telus, Desjardins, il n'y a presque auncun immeuble de 20 etages ou plus?! Les édifices entre University et Bleury sont tristes en effet, dans leur architectures affreuse, et dans leur manque d'ambition. Le poster-boy du manque d'ambition du boul. R-L est le 619 coin Beaver Hall. Triste.

C'est la même compagnie de vètement qui possède la marque Point Zero qui se lance dans l'immobilier ? C'est quand même particulier de voir ça, c'est ce que l'on appelle diversifier son porte feuille. :tup:

Oui et non. L'édifice appartient à Manioli Investments.

There seem to be a few legal troubles surrounding these properties and Manioli Investments (which seems to be more of an investment firm than a property developper).

The Montreal based garment company has bought a rather unimpressive looking 17 storey hotel at the corner of Rene-Levesque and Bleury and is in the process of retrofitting it and adding 13 floors on top. I'd reckon the height to be at 100 metres.

As of today, the building is currently being gutted is prep work to expand the tower from 17 to 30 floors is under way.

If an autistic child put 3 blocks together, this is what it would look like. The extension (floor 17 to 30) makes absolutely no sense in blending with the existing buildings and with the neighborhood. Where are we? Miami?

Autistic architecture? Hell, its worth doing just to tell people about it...

actually, this is looking awesome. i'm not loving the point zero branding on the building, but otherwise love the twin ideas of residential on that part of rene-levesque and rehabbing that building into an hotel. the design - which i find surprisingly understated for such a blingy operation - is way better than initial renderings.

I'm all torn up about this one. I don't really approve of it, but I think it is a marked improvement over what's currently there. I'm also keen to see it as part of a larger urban ensemble for the sector, along with the upcoming 400 Dowd, Marriott, Southam II and quite possibly the SNC expansion.

It certainly looks different; although, it's far from offensive.

And technically, this isn't "3 blocks." Only the original building is, which is now, I suppose, an exaggerated podium.

The question is, would it look better if the tower addition was taller, like 30, 40 floors (if that were possible)?

Je trouve le projet unique et intéressant. L'apparence est ''agréablement hétéroclite''.

En effet, c'est peu banal comme édifice. Un peu étrange, voire bizarre, mais certainement moins ennuyant qu'un vulgaire bloc. J'aimais bien également les premières évocations avec l'édifice illuminé en rouge.

Peut-être qu'avec un bon "recladding" sur la partie du bas ils arriveront à faire quelque chose d'un peu plus harmonieux?

L'ajout détonne, c'est vrai, mais le tout aura un petit quelque chose de japonais, me semble-t-il, dans l'empilement des morceaux et des époques. Il y avait un autre projet qui tentait ça près de la rue Sherbrooke, en plus réussi. J'ai oublié le nom mais on n'en entend plus parler, je crois. Dommage.

Quelqu'un sait d'où vient ce nom de point zéro ? Est-ce une traduction maladroite de ground zero ? (ce qui serait d'un goût douteux...) On n'est pas fort, fort sur les noms ces derniers temps à Montréal : Altitude, Altoria, point zéro, Tour du Canadien...

Point Zero est le nom de la compagnie qui construit l'édifice. Une compagnie Montrealaise, elle est mieux connue comme détaillant de vêtement.

J'avais lu trop vite les premiers messages. On aurait donc une méga-pub pour une compagnie de vêtements... Bof, pourquoi pas. Je vais pas les blâmer d'avoir de l'ambition.

Ça étonne un peu plus quand c'est pour un immeuble en partie voué à être habité. Qui veut habiter une marque et un logo ?

Southam II...Is there a thread for that yet or is it under another name?
