It's a beautiful picture in the way it shows the natural setting including the harbour, waterfront, etc, but I honestly can't see how it makes the downtown look in any way impressive. Half the downtown buildings are either partially or totally hidden, and on the ground can be seen an ugly parking lot and pedways connecting indoor shopping centres. The picture makes the downtown look unusually spare and empty to me.

But compared to London.....

I don't think the Purdy's Wharf photo is that unflattering. The waterfront is nice and busy. The parking lot is ugly but every city in Canada has them (although that whole end of the downtown is pretty much a disaster). There's this proposal for the triangular lot, although it's not under construction yet:
http://www.internationalplace.ca/images/building/02.jpg Source London is pretty similar size-wise but is not very attractive. It's unfortunate that the new towers that went up there were just clad in precast. Halifax does not have very high architectural standards for new buildings but at least they tend to be more varied and interesting. The other big advantages are the setting and architectural history. Landmarks like the Town Clock are very rare in Canada. |

Mainly because of the monstrosity that is Hallmark Place. It's certainly not hard to pick out of those shots. Especially with its charming death ray sitting prominently on top. :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: Anyone have any good shots from the South East? |

I am very anxious to get this same shot later this spring when Wascana Lake is melted and when the trees are blooming, its looks too drab right now. But the skyline is still great.

Yeah that is a good view of Regina. Where is it taken from, the university?

I think it is taken from the tower on hillsdale and 23rd ave?

I figured this thread needed to be revived.

Here are some pics of mine from BC's two smaller CMAs.
First is Victoria. I was there last week and took a couple pics from my hotel room at the Empress. This is only a small corner of Victoria's skyline (and also a new one). While Victoria does not have a massive skyline from afar it has a true big city feel when near. These towers are on the edge of downtown. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4018/...dc032af3_b.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4023/...102c0828_b.jpg And here are some pics I took of Kelowna's skyline the first weekend of April. Also a growing city. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2717/...9c9d3ce1_b.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4058/...002d7ec0_b.jpg Both of these skylines will continue to grow. Remember, BC is more than just the Vancouver area! Again, all photos are mine. Cheers! My flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30634635@N03/?saved=1 |
hey, nice work!

Thanks for the pics metro.
For one of the most photogenic and urban cities under 500k Victoria really gets little representation in the Canada section. |

Our buildings might not be very tall, but they line up quite well. At least in Port Arthur. |

That glassy tower looks good on Kelowna.

I had the (mis)fortune of living there for awhile and I still visit regularly. Luckily my job had me travelling everywhere from Westham Island to Naramata in the Okanagan. I made one or two trips in to Vancouver each week just for something to do. That being said the new art gallery is a start. Unfortunately when I went there when I was back for the Olympics it was devoid of people. The development of that city has led to such disjointed communities. |
It's almost impossible to take a complete photo of Saskatoon's skyline from the river side:

The way Saskatoon is booming however, it really needs a new tall office building to serve as the symbol of its current economic boom and it totally could too. Maybe a tall and than shorter one aside? The downtown is dense enough and laid out well as the rest of the city is spreading out very nicely. I'd really like to see the era end however, where a residential unit currently holds the highest height of a building in town...and maybe a new team/upgraded stadium too or am I asking for too much? I know all you S-Tooners would too but other than that, you're well on your way! |
|
great to see all of our smaller cities eveolving. I especially like Halifax, St John's, Regina, Saskatoon and Victoria. Leaving the other ones out is making me feel bad...... lol Our smaller cities have very impressive skylines. I went to saskatoon recently and they have a new condo district emerging downtown which is very cool for a city that could spread as far as it wanted to.

Donald and May Streets in Downtown Fort William seen from the council chambers of Thunder Bay City Hall. The area is very clean and sparkling now, and the pavement is fresh. Every time I am down there I feel kind of like I am in Arizona, which I always find really funny.

I almost said that it looked like Shanghai.
:D Actually, I like Charlottetown very much. Used to vacation in PEI. |

Nice!

I'm maybe a little biased since I'm moving there, but I definitely think Halifax looks the best out of the cities in this thread. A tall skyline dosen't necessarily make for a good skyline imo - personally I think NF looks kind of tacky (which is maybe to be expected) and heck, Halifax's tallest building is arguably its ugliest.
Plus there seems to be some really great buildings either being built or looking to be built. Once spots like The Trilliam and King's Wharf are complete and the Fenwick Tower revamp starts up (the Twisted Sisters emerging out of developmental limbo wouldn't hurt either) the combined Narrows skyline is going to be the best in the country among small cities, no question in my mind about that. |

^Is that a Cruise ship in Sault Ste. Marie?
|
Yup. It went all around Lake Superior. It's going down to Australia now though. I can't recall what is replacing it, I think there are a few companies looking at adding a cruise in the lake. Thunder Bay is lobbying hard for one since we're improving our marina to better accommodate them. Currently they park at the site of a former grain elevator and it's really ugly, but next summer they'll have a spot right downtown. There is a dock in a park in the other end of town that can accommodate large ships (used to be a grain elevator, too) but it isn't near much and the park has a lot of homeless people in it, not very tourist friendly.
If you consider Port Arthur and Fort William as well as Sudbury and New Sudbury to be separate cities from each other (in the sense of a built community and not a municipality), then Sault Ste. Marie is the largest city in northern Ontario. I figure North Bay is next, then PA, FW, Suds, New Suds and Timmins all fight over third. |
Here is the "skyline" of Chicoutimi, QC. It has a population of about 70 000. However, it's been merged with the city of Jonquière, La Baie and Laterrière in 2002 and the new name of the agglomeration is Ville de Saguenay (150 000 inhabitants). I'm not from there but I guess smaller cities need representation as well!!!
