City Skylines from Metro Airports

From most of my travels to various places, I realized that since an airport is built on flat land, there's a chance that you could catch a glimpse of a skyline from there. It may not apply to all cities, especially if the airport is far and there are hills/mountains in the way.

Here are some skylines from airports I have experienced before.

New York (Manhattan) from JFK:

Atlanta from Hartsfield-Jackson:

That last pic is from Love Field, quite a bit closer to downtown Dallas than DFW International.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is about 5 miles from the eastern edge of downtown Austin. It opened in 1999. ABIA is the former site of Bergstrom Air Force Base.

A photo from May 20, 1991 from when Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip visited Texas and landed at Bergstrom Air Force Base. The city's airport at the time, Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, which was a few miles north of Bergstrom, didn't have a long enough runway to accommodate larger planes. The original 12,500 foot air base runway is still in use by ABIA today.

Kevin, have you see the skyline view from Austin Bergstrom at the north end of the west runway? That end of the runway is relatively high and has a commanding view of the skyline if you're sitting on that side of the plane.

I'll have to dig them up, but I have pictures of the skylines of Tampa, Nashville, Salt Lake City, and Toronto from their airports. There might be a couple more as well.

I can't speak for the view from the tarmac, but the descent into Philly is quite the treat.

Maybe Austin should have a Capitol View Corridor from the airport runway or taxiway to preserve some form of this view, unless it has already been obscured.

^ I didn’t read the text at first and was thinking “what the hell is Concorde doing in Austin?”

Here’s London from Heathrow (apologies but I could only find huge or tiny):

For those not familiar, City Airport is pretty close in:

What a completely unique and eclectic skyline London has. Fascinating really.

^ I wish that photo extended farther to the left. It cuts off half of the City of London, and while there aren’t as many big towers northwest of that (maybe Centre Point and some near Euston), you’d get the dome of St Paul’s in view.

Maybe someday London’s skyline will extend all the way from the City to Canary Wharf along the DLR and A13. There’s a lot of underutilized land in between, and it’s mostly post-war low-rise housing (so nothing of historic value that would be protected). The key will be making mixed income work, because it’s mostly council flats.
