Inside Gary Barnett’s game of real estate Tetris
Extell chief is on a financing roll — but he’s not out of the woods yet

“All you have to do is go by 57th Street and you’d see it was getting built,” Barnett countered. “There’s never been a slowdown.”

That's a very troubling and very depressing article. Could this really go the way of the Chicago Spire? If we're 43 years past the completion of the Sears Tower and still can't get anything taller built, all I can say is wow... just, wow. :(

This article also hints at a reason for why One57 has no crown lighting.

The Chicago Spire never even made it off the ground, and the people behind that project were the total opposite of someone like Barnett (i.e. had no idea what they were doing and lacked any track record of huge projects). Granted the article is a little worrying, not just for this tower but for others too. The market has to tank sometime though, let's just hope that happens when this beast (and others) tops out and not before. :(

Well, it's not going to be another Chicago Spire considering it's under construction and probably some 400 feet out of the ground. Not sure what would happen if funding didn't come through. I guess a truncated building...

Like 111 W. Wacker in Chicago. It does happen.

I'm fairly certain you didn't read the article.

This building is financed, u/c, and Barnett is like the polar opposite of the little-known carpenter who claimed he would build the Chicago Spire.

Barnett is the most prolific urban developer in the U.S. and has never had a failed project. He's also inherently conservative with financing, and has Manhattan massive land holdings, but obviously he prefers using other people's money.

Except that One57 does have crown lighting.

One57 was one of the most successful condo developments in NYC history, BTW.

Barnett is kind of what Trump claims to be. He actually is a skyline-changing billionaire urban developer who builds pretty amazing projects that tend to be "huuge" successes. But he's a very modest, understated family-oriented Orthodox Jew, who still lives in Queens with his big family, shunning the spotlight.

I read the article, but the fact that the 900 million construction loan is still hanging out there should give one cause for worry.

I'd love to see some pictures of the finished crown lighting on One57. The only ones on the internet are the official renders as far as I can tell...

The crown was lit up green the other day. I believe that they're working on it still.

I'm guessing the cantilever itself will be just structural steel with no concrete?
