Streetcar tracks and overhead wires? I'll gamble on Barton too but I have no idea which street it is. This 1930s era map would likely show the candidates.

Between 1888 and 1895. Old City Hall opened in 1888 and can be seen in this photo so it has to be after that. The Hamilton Incline Railway was opened in 1895 but it isn't in the photo so it has to be before that.

The Terminal Building. Another shameful demolition.

The Plantation used to be on Hwy 53 right?

As a kid, I remember driving that way (before it became Rymal Rd.) on the first leg of the trip to Windsor, as well as to get to my Westinghouse Hotpoint minor hockey league games at the Ancaster doublerinks every Saturday.

It was at Rymal and Upper Gage.

I've never seen this photo or any like it. I wish there were more of York before the 'renewal.'

ScreamingViking Nov 13, 2014 3:06 AM

A bustling street, that must have been.

Beedok Nov 13, 2014 3:23 AM

Now that was a serious mistake. The new York set up doesn't seem to have added anything. I'm for renewal if it renews, but that was just destruction.

matt602 Nov 13, 2014 10:25 AM

Notice how the street is only one lane in each direction, with street parking. Even back then when there was significantly more traffic on downtown streets than today. Not the empty 4-6 lane one-way streets of today.

^A few observations:
i) Mr Sub at the corner of King and Walnut;
ii) Ford Pinto - perhaps the worst car ever made; and
iii) The Hyland showing 'sexy' films?
The 70s rule.

matt602 Nov 25, 2014 10:25 PM

How did a place showing films of that caliber go under? Sexy times for the hammer.

ScreamingViking Nov 26, 2014 1:54 AM

I have no memory of the building on the southeast corner of King and Walnut (where Forbidden City is now) with its windows uncovered.

Also just realized the pawnbroker's "LOANS" sign of today is the Hyland's with different lettering.

First Place must have been quite new in that photo.
