An American icon. Visiting this building for the first time in 1989 (I was five) was what got me interested in skyscrapers, so it holds a special place in my heart.

I love it. Really.

But I think it failed to become a real icon.
I bet it's practically unknown outside the US or our circle.

That would mean that the only icons that are known to the average person is just the ESB and the Eiffel Tower.

A true classic, I havent heard anyone who dislikes this building here at SSP. Its not perfect, far from a detailed masterpiece, but its just so right the way it is.

I've always been curious about something. Chicago is called the city of big shoulders. What does that mean exactly? I've always thought the Sears Tower itself looks like it has big shoulders. Those 90th floor setbacks, I mean. Has anyone ever read anything that suggested that was intentional?

SNT1 Jul 11, 2008 4:11 AM

I love this skyscraper as much as I love JHC for almost the same exact reasons.

If only the Tower had an architectual spire on it instead of broadcast antennas, this would have most likely remained the tallest completed skyscraper in the world. Either way however; Sears Tower is one of the world's most iconic skyscrapers period!

I agree, in France, most of people don't know this tower exists, they don't even visit Chicago, big mistake!

For me the Sears is The symbol of Chicago, I love it, here's a few pics I took:

LOL I know what you mean - the silhouette from the West (looking East) resembles a head & shoulders.

The quote is Carl Sandburg:

Hog Butcher for the World
Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat
Player with Railroads and the Nation's Freight Handler,
Stormy, Husky, Brawling, and City of the Big Shoulders.

Sandburg is celebrating the role that brawn and labor played in the city's explosive rise in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

I think it was really avant-gardiste for a 1974 building.

America 117 Jul 26, 2008 10:55 PM

i love the sears towers black facade.
and JHC's too.

Good work Sandy.

This monster can create it's own clouds ala Mt Fuji but on a much smaller scale of course.

Or is that being given off the building itself? I am not sure in this pic but I have seen clouds develop and dissapear from the sears before.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Perhaps I am just insane.

Seppuko_Panda Jul 27, 2008 4:04 AM

Actually thats exhaust from the building's ventilation system.

Sandy Jul 27, 2008 6:03 AM

It would have been cool if these clouds were produced because of its height but I think Seppuko_Panda is right, I took these pics early in the morning at the end of October, it was cold and as these clouds disappeared as the day advanced, so ventilation is a better explanation, probably a cloud of steam due to the difference of temperature;

Sandy, again, I love your pictures.

Looks like you ventured far from the loop.
Was there a point of interest in that area ? (beside the magnificent view of Sears from afar ...)
