So no renders?...why bother even having a news conference

Anyway here is the civil drawings which show pretty much the same layout as the drawings uploaded here a few months ago:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DjcBVhKW4AEkfsn.jpg

I'm guessing the largest will be Dollarama?...And Shoppers will be E?

F is likely Starbucks. B the Gasbar/Convience store.

There are renderings on the work site billboard. Strange that no one has posted it online yet?? You're likely right that B will be a gasbar/convenience, the drawings look like gas pumps in front of building B. I did hear that Irving was the going there. It seems to be rather close to the Irving station further down Topsail... or may be its not.

I think we can all visualize without renders what this development is going to look like :haha:

With the Irving being just down the road it be kinda strange for them to have another one so close by. My guess would have been an Ultramar as it's the only one I can think of not in that area.

CBC are calling this a 'shoppers paradise'. I think they mean, it's a Shoppers in Paradise! :)

J_Murphy Jul 31, 2018 5:02 PM

On a side note, since we are talking about Shopper Drug Mart. Anyone have any idea what is going on with Empire/Freshwater Road location? I thought the new one would have been started long ago.

Arrakis Jul 31, 2018 5:24 PM

I’m gonna guess that “A” is Shoppers and “E” is Dollarama as most Dollaramas are not that big. Guess we’ll find out over the next several months.

Yeah that's probably right. I kind of went back and forth on which is which...for some reason in my head I thought the newer Dollaramas being built were fairly large..

I glanced at the renders driving by but couldn't really make anything out. I don't get why the reporters who went to cover the news announcement didn't bother to grab a pic? It's literally their job...

CBC has updated their article with a render:

Go figure NTV would have some better renders if the Paradise development.

Seems like all the renders are based on the civil drawings that were on here a few months ago which are slightly different than the drawings shown from yesterday.

Also at the end of that NTV news segment they mention that this company is also planning another retail center in the St. John's area with details in the fall...

eliza Aug 2, 2018 10:32 AM

Noticed that construction has been happening inside the old Golf Town on White Rose Dr the last couple of weeks, not sure if anything is happening or not.

Crisisnf Aug 3, 2018 12:00 PM

Walked through the Mount Pearl Walmart the other and saw staff filling the new refrigerated showcases with cakes and pies...the same cakes and pies they have stacked on tables and have had for a year or more. I was hoping for fresh meat and fresh baked goods like you see in the States. What a disappointment! Hopefully the cakes and pies are just a place holder.

The superstore Wal Marts have an in-house bakery, so you should be able to get fresh breads/buns/etc. I don't believe they will have a butcher though so it may be best to avoid it for fresh meats.

Malreynolds Aug 4, 2018 11:26 AM

they will have "Fresh" Meats and stuff like that but it wont be there till close to launch. But instead of leaving coolers empty for months they are filling them up with random stuff until said time. The "Fresh" produce section was filled with pepsi coke and other drinks. And yes the cakes are placeholders but they also stay fresher in a refrigerator then just sitting on a warm shelf so its a win win for walmart at the moment.

Also found out from someone who works at Mount pearl that they are trying to source as much as possible from local Newfoundland business such as chicken from county ribbon

Arrakis Aug 4, 2018 7:29 PM

The new Orange Store Gas statiion and what I think will eventually be another new Dairy Queen popped up pretty quickly thanks to prefab concrete. I noticed that there is also what looks to be a drive-thru window on the Orange Store side too.

According to this tweet it is indeed going to be a Dairy Queen:

I walked through Walmart in Mount Pearl. It's coming along. I'm hoping all that white paint inside and out is just a primer. It's pretty cold looking -except for that overkill of shiny blue near the entrance. I guess they are trying to make the entrance look a little more grand as the mainland supercentres have 2 entrances and ours will only have the one. Our Newfoundland Supercentres are a watered down version of the Walmart Supercentre. Much of the rest of Canada get the real ones that I've been in and they are about 200,000 square feet. Even Charlottetown and Sydney have full size Supercentres. Oh well. I'm not surprised.

Freshil is opening next to Little Caesars in the fall, it's a 'healthy' fast casual restaurant.

J_Murphy Aug 8, 2018 1:02 PM

Looks like Tweed will be setting up shop in the former Cellar location on Water Street, on the corner with Clifts-Bairds Cove across from the court house.

Also, site development is in full swing for the production facility on Eastland Cres, off East White Hills Road.

Was just up at Capital Hyundai on Kenmount Road and discovered they are gonna be building a new brand new and much larger dealership on the other side Kia where they currently store their extra vehicle stock. I wonder if the old dealership will become a Genesis franchise?

As of right now I do not believe there are any tenants. Though I wouldn't get the information until afterwards anyways (on contractor side of things).

Arrakis Aug 13, 2018 10:20 AM

Was just driving home from work and noticed that the Ultramar gas station on Higgins Line across from the Super 8 is now an Irving station with a Circke K store. Temporary banners are in place right over the Ultramar signs.

Sox Aug 13, 2018 11:01 AM

Same as the Ultramar across from the Delta ! It is also now an Irving
I'm hearing that Irving has taken over a bunch ( but not all ) of the Ultramar's around town.
I think the independantly owned ones will remain as Ultramar.

CBSNewbie Aug 13, 2018 8:48 PM

The Ultramar in Long Pond CBS is now an Irving as well.

Arrakis Aug 14, 2018 5:53 AM

Here’s the full story of the Irving purchase of Ultramar stations in NL.

Chew Aug 14, 2018 12:10 PM

I'm really surprised to see Ultramar on Commonwealth on the list to become an Irving since there is one already almost right next to it! I've never seen the same gas station within eyesight of itself before... weird. Maybe they will close the existing one?

goodgrowth Aug 14, 2018 12:43 PM

If this is the case then that rumour about the gas station going in the new Paradise shopping centre being an Irving is probably true..

Chew Aug 14, 2018 1:36 PM

Paradise doesn't have Shell or Canadian Tire gas, but the way things are going with Irivings, since they only have one in that area, that is a bit low lol

Kessel Run Aug 19, 2018 1:56 PM

Wasn't it in the town council minutes that A&W was being built at the corner of Trails End and Topsail? There isnt much room for both North Atlantic and A&W at that site, and it also isn't an Orange Store. I could see the gas station closing and moving to the new Paradise Plaza, especially with all their recent expansions.

According to the council minutes it's an extension to the North Atlantic. Not much room there at all but I'm guessing they will just get rid of the car wash and maybe add a few feet..

The Paradise Plaza is really coming along with the pads/footings completed for most of the stores. I haven't seen and hint of work commence on the roundabout in front at McNamara. My guess would be that the town of Paradise will wait for the businesses to be opened up with so that they can turn the area into complete chaos instead of doing it now. I will also guess that it will take a year to build this roundabout, causing people to avoid the area and the new businesses.

Considering some of stores are supposed to open next spring I really wouldn't be surprised if the roundabout is being worked on when the stores are opening/already opened.

Avalon mall update:

I was in the mall last night for the first time in a while, and was quite surprised by the amount of work that is ongoing. All the floor tiles and ceiling from the escalators (outside Coles) up towards the elevator and escalators to the food court has been removed.

Upstairs is quite different. The hallway that runs from the food court down towards the theaters has been renovated with new tiles and lighting. It is VERY BRIGHT! It was kind of hard on the eyes to be honest. However, looks pretty good!
