The Brick

Driving along Kenmount Rd. today I saw a Grand Opening sign hung outside the new Brick store, but there's no actual store signage yet.

Seems a little cart before the horse but OK:shrug:

Opening November 19. I have a screen shot to post but I don’t know how).

Pipers is returning to Mount Pearl. It's only been a year since they left their location on Commonwealth Avenue, but they are coming back in the old Max Athletic building near the entrance to Galway.

Guess they are moving in now that GNC is gone. Always wondered how well these supplement stores do. I use to buy that stuff but not anymore.

Think it would be more lucrative it were directly in the same building as a gym.

Wasnt sure where this would fit. Axtion announced they were closing last night. They are closing their doors this weekend due to low numbers of customers because of fear of covid. Rocket moved their downtown location to keep their business open. If things don't improve soon we could see more closures which is sad to see.

Very sad indeed, all the local businesses are being wiped out. The only thing left standing will be the multi-national corporations, a bitter pill to swallow

Yes, a bitter pill indeed. It's very saddening to see local businesses hemorrhage and not be able to do anything about it. Once we go back to "normal", I wonder how many locally owned businesses will be able to get back on their feet vs national chains establishing those businesses here? I sure hope local businesses can do it, they're the engines of our local economy.... the money will stay here... we need that!

RBC is closing their 664 Topsail Road location. They've been their since the late 60's/early 70's. Staff and services will be consolidated with their Kelsey Drive branch. I'm not sure when the actual closing date is.

Anybody know what happened to EBGames on Kelsey Drive? Drove by today and noticed the sign is gone and the inside is packed up. Google says its temporarily closed but it looks pretty permanent from the outside.

Another victim of booming online retail coupled with COVID-19 slowdowns. I believe the location at the Village is closed too. I went to the Kelsey location just before Christmas to pick up a game for my son. I purposely wanted to buy from a local spot. Tried Toy R Us first but no luck. I waited outside at EBgames for 20 mins (Max limit of 5 iirc). Finally got inside and they didn't have the game either. Went out to my car and three taps on the screen had it ordered - delivered to my doorstep in 2-3 weeks. I could have tried at another location but couldn't risk the potential wait time with no reward. It's just a really tough environment for brick and mortar stores right now.

There is an EBgames in Avalon Mall too isn't there? I can understand how two locations so close to one another wouldn't be sustainable.

If you want to try local for video games, have you been to Games exchange on Freshwater Road? Not sure if they sell new but they have a massive collection of used games. Prices are better than new and I've found the quality good. Staff are great there too.

Thanks for the recommendation! I've been there before (many years ago) but I think it was called something else. To be completely honest, I forgot this place existed.

Saw Giant Tiger transport truck at Costco last week...have seen a few of them around in the past year.

Plaza Retail website shows lease pending for large space to be built next to Dollarama in Galway. Thinking that would be a good location.

Probably doesn't mean anything that its a Giant Tiger truck as it may be operated by an independent trucking company, i know that Mcdonalds trucks pick up Snow crab from the processing plants here to go to mainland. I as well as yourself have seen Giant Tiger trucks on the TCH heading east in the last year.

I would like to see some restaurants of some type out in Galway, like to see a local brand, eg. Mary Browns, Jungle Jims etc

Wal Mart Topsail Road is closing. Not really surprised, that was such an odd store.

Arrakis Mar 15, 2021 6:16 PM

Not surprised either. Is,ways considered that location to be a temporary thing as Walmart is only leasing that property from Crombie REIT.

Would probably make an ideal location for a Giant Tiger since they are in expansion mode and keen to open here.

Walmart Topsail Road

When I heard Walmart was renovating a ton of stores this year, I had assumed this would be one of them, as it was just Zellers/Kmart with a Walmart sign and a coat of blue paint.

Just discovered that Costco has closed it's in-store Photo Centre in ALL locations. While it's easy
to get Passport photos locally, I often used their framing service - i know that they jobbed out
all their framing to a local vendor, never knew who it was, anyone know who did their framing, plaque mounting?

Oh no! I have had pictures I’ve been putting off getting framed. I had a few done at Costco a couple years ago and had others I wanted done in the same frame.

Wondering if anyone has heard anything about a possible sale of the old RONA on Torbay Road. We noticed that the for sale signs are all gone not long ago. I just did a quick google search and the site I found indicated its "under offer".

https://www.commerciallistings.cbre....g9?view=isSale

Edited to add that the same website also shows the old Target as being "under offer" as well.

https://www.commerciallistings.cbre....e8?view=isSale

Any insights?

I’ve heard that Princess Auto is under offer as well, same with Costco. Costco I can’t find online anymore.

I think the signs were still up on Princess Auto but we have seen a few cars by the building recently. I'll have to take a drive up that way to see if the signs are still up.

Arrakis Mar 23, 2021 3:06 AM

Also, no for sale sign on former Princess Auto building, but there is one on the front lawn.

That's interesting. I assume they will be moving one of their stores from Torbay Road or Elizabeth Avenue. Three Pipers stores in the east end seems like a lot! Would be a great spot for them though!

It's good to hear something happening on Stavanger Drive.

Drove by the former RONA in Paradise today. Lots of activity happening there. Still can’t tell if they are renovating the old building or demolishing it. They have the exterior cladding removed down to the bare wood beneath.

All I could find is an approval for a Capital Home Hardware at 1297 Topsail Road on the Town Of Paradise’s municipal agenda dated March 3, 2021. They were also granted tax incentives too.

Surprised it took this long to make that decision.

With the current times complicated by the pandemic and streaming networks seemingly taking over with releasing first run movies, cinemas are declining in certain markets these days. I actually fear for the survival of the cinemas at Avalon Mall too. :(

Still maintain that a new smallish(~8 screen) cinema in Galway would be ideal and probably do well. Can't imagine it's financially feasible right now though.

It could be a staffing thing or they could be relocating to the Avalon Mall - the opticians there used to work at Sears Optical.
