Was looking at other pics of Rec Rooms across Canada and it seems that this design is exclusive to the Rec Room look and feel and not the entire mall’s future look.

I can't tell if this is just a sketch for the Rec Room addition which is currently being built, or if it's for everything. Since the entire mall exterior is about to remodeled, I imagine pretty much all of the ground level won't look like that when it's done, and will probably match the exterior images from the article.

That little arch has always made me lol though. It's a back entrance through the mall, and I think it's been like that since the mall opened :haha:

Was driving by there yesterday and that little 1980’s style arch over the Thorburn entrance has been removed.

That little arch entrance is early 90s. I believe it looked different when it was the exclusive entrance for the local department store Ayre's which closed in 1991.

I think we have given this far more discussion than it deserves. Lol.

End of an era for what use to be the original Canadian Tire on Kenmount Rd., then a drug store before becoming a strip mall. It’s being demolished now to make way for the Avalon Malls reconfigured parking lot as part of the mall’s ongoing renovation which will eventually see about one third of the Sears building being demolished too and the parking lot in front of the former sears being enclosed as part of the mall.

Musta been before CT was in the Cora's space on Kenmount? I don't remember them being in the Mall parking lot.

Saw some activity at the former Rogers location on Merchant Drive the other day...anyone know what's going on there?

Just before.. they moved there from the location in front of the Mall. That location than was a Lawtons before that moved in to the Mall to replace Trans Canada Drugs. Then it was divided up with many different retailers over the years. Wacky Wheatleys had a large space there at one time.

Yes, it was indeed before CT had moved to the Cora’s building. The CT on the mall parking lot was around the same time when the Avalon Mall originally opened in 1967 or late 60’s into the 70’s. It remained there into the 1970’s until it moved to a larger location further up Kenmount Road (Cora’s building) and finally to Kelsey Drive.

I drove past the site today and workers were putting up a billboard sign. Looks to be about 5-6 buildings. There will be a Dollarama, Shoppers, Starbucks, East Side Mario's and more.

Not another Dollarama.... A new East side Mario's would be good though. I feel the other one is very run down. Nothing updated in years!

getting split into 3 units, the side closest to CIBC is becoming Harveys, the side closest to Arizona Heat is Tommy Guns Barbour Shop and the middle is unleased as far as i know.

Offshore1 Jul 31, 2018 11:15 AM

As much as I agree with you - Paradise does lack a discount dollar store so I think a Dollarama will do very well there. East Side Mario's is a decent choice in my mind - not mind blowing by no means. It's only the second location in the city and the first one is old now and not much has been done with it in years. When you think about it, this is the first franchise restaurant (other than fast food) in the town. Plus, it's hard not to have a Cara franchise... it seems like they own everything! Starbucks is a pleasant surprise, I wasn't expecting that. I'm intrigued by what else is going in there.

goodgrowth Jul 31, 2018 12:57 PM

I think there is/was a Great Canadian Dollar Store next to West Side Charlies in Paradise...though I don't think that would really compare to a Dollarama..

Either way in my opinion when it comes to Paradise it's just about getting some retail in general. It probably has almost the same population as Mount Pearl now yet significantly less retail options...
